Elbyrne G. Gill Eye and Ear Foundation in Roanoke,

Virginia in support of Brent A. Senior, MD, FACS, FARS

who will be presenting this year’s Elbyrne G. Gill Lecture.

Elbyrne G. Gill, MD was born in Bedford, Virginia in October

1891 and began practice as an EENT physician in 1919. He

founded the Gill Memorial Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in

1926. Dr. Gill established the Post Graduate Program in

1927 which was, at the time and for many years thereafter,

the only refresher course held in this country for graduates

in medicine specializing in eye, ear, nose and throat care.

The weeklong course, held in Roanoke, featured many

outstanding physicians from the U.S. and abroad.

After Dr. Gill’s death in 1966, Gill Memorial Hospital

continued the programs for several years, and the Gill

Foundation subsequently held a number of eye and ear

symposia in cooperation with the continuing education

department of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Gill’s daughters, Edith Page Gill Breakell and Betty

Byrne Gill Ware, serve as President and Treasurer of the

Gill Foundation, respectively. The Foundation continues to

be dedicated to the prevention of blindness and deafness.
