“Yet, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our potter; and we are all the work of Your hand,” Isaiah 64:8

This Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10th, Trinity invites you to come and be a part of our midweek worship. We will be having some of our members as cast of weekly dramas with the theme, “The Potter and Me.” We will also be using our Hol-den Evening liturgy as our worship format.

Worship will start at 7 pm on Wednesdays from Feb 10- March 16. We are plan-ning Soup Dinners prior to worship at 6 pm. Confirmation Classes will be shortened be-ginning at 6:30- 7 pm. (Please see the detailed schedule of events)

What is Lent? Even for those of us who have participated in Lenten seasons since infancy there are many ways to answer the question. Most answers gravitate to the central thought that it is a time of reflection on our discipleship as followers of Christ. But the center is that it is a time to reflect on why Christ suffered “for me.”

To most who have experienced Lenten devotions, dramas, sermons, worship, mu-sic; the time has a special simplicity and beauty that is unmatched in other seasons. Strangely, because of its Christ-centeredness, it is not dark but light. The Light shines out of the Cross.

Come and bring your little ones, bring your friends and family, to experience the wonder of this time to see our Lord Jesus truly for us in all its raw and beautiful power and depth.

Together, let us worship our King and Redeemer, and grow in His Love!

Gary and I were privileged to sit down with Pr. Jum (salt), the vice-secretary of the US Ka-chin Baptist Church this past weekend. Pr. Jum is a very energetic young pastor with great English skills, from Indiana, and he came to Vancouver to be part of the Washington Oregon Kachin Baptist Church (the Myanmar group that meets in our building) celebration of their one year anniversary on January 16.

We learned some things! There are over 13 other Kachin Baptist congregations spread over the U.S., the closest one in the Seattle area, and one in Canada. Some of the members have to travel hours (3-4 hours even) to reach their place of worship. Even one of our group’s pas-tors (Pr. Sai) drives up from Eugene OR on Sundays. We also met Rev. Gumsang, pastor of a 2000 member church in Myanmar, who, on a tourist visa, will be serving as interim pastor for our group (WOKBC) for the next six months.

Pr. Jum related to us that the Kachin group is very sensitive about their cultural differences and want to do their best to build relationship and faith with Trinity Lutheran. He also ex-pressed that the gift of space in our building they understand to be God’s great work—more than they could have ever asked for!

The Anniversary celebration on January 16 was certainly Asian in character, and went long. And there were guests from other Kachin Baptist churches—coming from Texas, Ne-braska, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, California and Seattle. And best of all, the preacher of the day was a woman!...Pastor Nang who pastors a small Kachin Baptist Church in Michigan, preaching on I Peter chapter two. These are certainly God’s people with a heart for His mission and a desire to find their way in this new land. Thank you Trinity for continuing to give them such generous hospitality! Pr. Ruth

We will travel to OMSI in Portland on Friday, February 26. Meet at 10:30 am and plan to eat an early lunch at the new eatery at OMSI called Theory. The restaurant encourages visitors to explore the science of food, and offers a tasty meal. Prices range from $4 to $12. We will watch the Planetarium show at 12:30 pm called the Perfect Little Planet (An ultimate space vacation on a solar system journey) That cost is $5.75 and the Van cost is $5.00. Please sign up on the sheet at the Wel-come Window for a seat on the van.

It is that time of year when we are being invited to participate in the annual Read-a-Thon at our partner elementary school. In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday local schools invite the community to participate in reading to the children either from a favorite book of your own choosing or from one selected by the classroom teacher. There is special interest in anything Dr. Seuss. We need seventeen volunteers to meet at the school at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 4 to read in classrooms for about 30 minutes. The children are in kindergarten through fifth grade. You may choose the level you would like to visit. It is a lot of fun. Sign up in the Narthex February 14, 21, or 28.

Trip for Fun

Happy Lunch Bunch PAGE 4

Everyone available for a daytime program is invited to our Happy Lunch bunch potluck on Tuesday, February 16. We especially invite retired folks. All senior citizens are given a special welcome and anyone needing a ride should call the office (695 1221) for a chariot to come pick them up. If possible bring a hot dish, a salad, or a dessert for the table, or just pop an extra dollar in the free will basket. In February our guest program will be twenty-five 2nd grade children from Kelly Draper's class at Lincoln School. They are busy writing stories to share with us. Please come and bring a friend, to help little children feel excited and proud. And to help each of us feel a great joy.

Love bears all things,

believes all things, hopes

all things, endures all

things.

It is unfortunate that we have lost several knitters be-cause of various reasons. I need to know who has been knitting shawls? If you are knitting currently or have in the past, or would like to start knitting prayer shawls talk to Ruth Thomas after church in the small chapel any Sunday or call 600-8206 or 992-0626. Thanks to a generous donor we now have a large supply of yarn in the office area for you to use. Any-

one interested in learning to knit please contact Ruth Thomas. Youth are welcome. All shawls and hats are donated to children and adults in need of prayer. Please consider joining this blessed ministry.

WELLNESS CORNER

Last month Sue Hoeffner provided information from the American Stroke Association and Mayo Clinic with an excellent comprehensive overview on stroke detection; warning signs and complications. Some significant risk factors listed were obesity, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.. TLC has a convenient and fun solution that is thought to allow a decrease in risk. Some of your friends from TLC are already attending Enhanced Fitness 3X weekly in Stolee Hall. See Poster below for details. Thank you Sue for keeping us healthy over the years.

Kids’ Club

Sunday School “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the World!”

And at Trinity, we so love the little children too! Sunday mornings, for children, begin at 9:30, in Stolee Hall. Pre-schoolers through fifth-graders first gather together for sing-ing, prayer, puppets and fun; then attend age-group classes for Bible stories. These be-loved stories are made memorable by the creative activities and crafts planned by our

dedicated Sunday School teachers. Simple snacks are also provided. (Parents/Grandparents pick up their children from their classrooms at 10:20-10:25, in time for worship at 10:30.)

Children, come and join the fun! In the coming weeks, enjoy stories of Jesus' life and ministry, leading to Easter! And speaking of Easter, you won’t want to miss the amazing Easter story and sur-prises in Sunday School that morning! We’ll see you soon, at Trinity Sunday School!

Ash Wednesday, February 10th at 7 pm in the Sanctuary

As most of you know, Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent—the 6 weeks before Easter. Each Wednesday evening in Lent, the church has a short devo-tional service to help us learn more about Christ’s gift of salvation, give thanks and prepare our hearts for the Easter celebration. Since the services are shorter and less formal than our regular Sunday worship this is a wonderful opportunity for families with children to get used to being in church. And it’s a good time for all of us adults to take some time out from our crazy, hectic schedules and meditate on the goodness of God.

Watch for more details—coming soon!

CHILDREN’S NEWS

Save the Date!

TKC serves families in the Lincoln neighborhood and beyond who may need a place for their chil-dren to hang out, on the early release Mondays of the school year. And TKC is not meant to be a mere hangout. We are growing friendships, having fun and goofy time with one another, and building meaning into the lives of a bunch of great kids.

Since the beginning of the school year, we have centered our club days around the 9 fruits of the Spirit, those ways of being that are created in us by virtue of our being in Christ--love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. We bounce around Stolee Hall playing rambunctious games, eat snacks, sit for Bible stories, work on craft projects and some-times get involved in service projects, science experiments, math or geography activities. TKC is a collaborative effort and takes many hands to fulfill our commitment. If you would like to get involved, even if just for one time, contact one of the leaders...
