D erwydd Mansion, one of Carmarthenshire’s oldest private Mansion Houses isopening its wrought iron gates for your special day.

Derwydd is a family run venue where guests are made to feel welcome andrelaxed at once. The mansion and grounds are surrounded by farmland and

hills, typical of the beautiful Welsh countryside.

The extensive grounds and gardens have plenty of areas to explore, including a walkthrough approx. 1 acre of woodland to a peaceful “painting lawn” where the stunningCarreg Cennen Castle can be seen between the valleys. The Estate also has its own freshspring water supply as well as a listed sundial.

Guests will be free to explore the grounds and the opportunity for photos should not bemissed. As well as extensive gardens, the Mansion House is home to original Jacobeanmantelpieces with 15th Century fireplaces.

The wall frieze of early Tudor origins contains the Arms of Sir Rhys ap Thomas, togetherwith the Tudor Rose and there are also impressive original ceiling visible in the oldest partof the House. A grand pitch pine staircase, Victorian conservatory, stained glass windowsand original furniture and painting can also be seen as you step back in time through thisbeautiful house. Tours of the house can be arranged as part of the package.

Derwydd Mansion is also available for hire as a film and photoshoot location.

ppearing first in the history books of 1485, Derwydd Mansion definitely has the lineage of a distinguished country home. Once owned by Tudor Knight Sir Rhys ap Thomas, Derwydd was said to have sheltered Henry Tudor on hisway to Bosworth. When he landed at Milford Haven to claim the crown from

Richard III and end the War of the Roses, he was entertained at Derwydd and supplied with5,000 Welsh soldiers who marched with him to victory at the Battle of Bosworth. The connection is commemorated in a sculpture of a shield in the King’s Room.

The house came to Sir Henry Vaughan of Golden Grove by marriage to Sage, grand-daughter of Rhydderch, in 1603. Vaughan was High Sheriff in 1620, knighted in 1632 and died in 1660. Theovermantel in the main hall is dated 1644 (the year of his capture at Naseby and commencementof 15 years imprisonment) and incorporates the initials of Henry and Sage Vaughan.

The original Tudor mansion, situated near Ammanford, was in 1670 described as a house of18 hearths, making it one of the largest in the county of Carmarthenshire.

The house passed, again by marriage, to Sir Thomas Stepney of Llanelli in the early 18th Century, and then in the mid 18th Centuryto Joseph Gulston and hence to StepneyGulston until the mansions sale in 1999.

The mansion is a Grade 2 star listed building and in addition there are a number of itemisedinternal and external features, which areindividually listed. Some of these include stained glass windows in the entrance hallway,oak fireplaces and plasterwork in the study andfamily room, walled garden and gazebo.

T he ghost of the White Lady or Gwen Vaughan as she is formally known, has beenpassed down from generation to generation. It is said that before the death of thehead of the family, the ghost of the White Lady appears by the window in the roomof Sir Rhys ap Thomas. The lady is said to stand in the window with one arm on thesill and the other pointing in a certain direction.

Tradition has it that she only appears to unmarried men.

By Car�From the M4:�At the end of the M4, exit Pont Abraham roundabout onto the A48 towards Carmarthen. After 3.7 miles, take the 4th exit onto Llandeilo Road/A476.Continue to follow the A476 for 5.3 miles before turning right down a country lanearrowed “Derwydd”. After 0.5 miles, turn right and you will see the walled perimeter ofDerywdd Mansion on your left after 0.1 miles. (17 minutes / 9.7 miles).

From Llandeilo:�Head southwest on Bridge Street/A483, crossing the River Towy towardsFfairfach. At the mini roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto the A476. After 2.4 miles, turn leftdown a country lane arrowed “Derwydd”. After 0.5 miles, turn right and you will see thewalled perimeter of Derwydd Mansion on your left after 0.1 miles (7 minutes / 3.5 miles).

From Ammanford:�From Wind Street, head northeast at the lights onto CollegeStreet/A483. Continue on the A483 for 4.1 miles. At Derwydd, take a left before theCollege Inn and continue for 0.7 miles (crossing a small railway bridge). After 0.7 miles,turn left downhill towards the walled perimeter of Derwydd Mansion on your left after 0.1 miles (11 minutes / 5 miles).
