Choral Mass 14 May 11:15 am Mass! Missa Brevis

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594)

The Missa Brevis is a mass written by Giovanni

Pierluigi da Palestrina and first published in

1570 in Palestrina’s Third Book of Masses. This

work is considered to be one of the most per-

formed of Palestrina’s repertoire of polyphony.

An important characteristic of Palestrina ex-

pressed clearly in this work is the use of fre-

quent tempo changes, which are governed en-

tirely by the changing meaning and significance

if the text. Hence there is a far greater feeling of

phrase than of beat and rhythm. The unity of

form which overwhelms the listener reflects

very clearly the peace and serenity that Palestri-

na himself possessed in his faith. It is believed

that this Mass was written around 1558.
