In the stillness of a winter dusk the house seems to be holding its

breath, waiting for summer. And that is partly true, for beach homes

are most alive in summer. But inside, the fire is burning, the soup is

simmering and this very individual house is showing its warmer side.

Come December, nothing about the house will have changed, but every-

thing about the way it lives will be different. The deck and the pool will

be the centre of the world for family and friends, ringing loud with the

sounds and splashes and laughter of summer.

Even at the beach, good design caters for all the seasons.

Fasham design and build individual homes for individual clients. Every home.

We Were on the lam ... and it has become one of my most treasured and special times

i remember her as the wild kid in class, with hair that looked like seagulls had flocked in it, wearing op-shop taffeta ball gowns with desert boots to school. She was

funny, impressive and a little intimidating, and I wanted to be her friend.

She tells me she remembers me as this wide-eyed, confident girly-girl, wearing green cords with pink sneakers, hand in the air at every class, and locked into a small knot of similar swots and smart-arses. She liked me a lot, but didn’t know how to get things started.

A wise and insightful teacher put us together, literally, with a most direct instruction: “You two are going to like each other a lot – you should be friends.” He got a lot of things right, that teacher. This has to be his most brilliant accomplishment.

My friend has been in my life since we were 14, and this relationship has been and remains one of the cornerstones of my life.

I’ve had cause to reflect on friendships and meaningful connections recently, and my conclusion is this: that, like great marriages, great relationships are not “work”, and you don’t need to “work” at them, as people will admonish you, as you do a difficult job. Instead, like the most beautiful trees, they need tending and support in the early years, emergency interventions in times of stress or drought, and then they need simply the care that

love naturally brings to grow in glory, season in and out.I know several people who have maintained close and

long-standing friendships through their lives, through challenge and change, and I know those who have not: those have, either through what felt like necessity or sometimes even survival, either cut down such a relationship or simply walked away from it and started another, often in another country or circumstance, often more than once. A part of me admires their single-mindedness: I am tribal in a way that is possibly not always helpful.

But the profound qualities of those who hold that line of friendship through time are great ones, I believe – they seem to be empathy, compassion and an ability to forgive that always recommends them to me as real human beings. They are what the Yiddish call a mensch.

I’d like to think that my friend and I possess those fine qualities. We certainly have maintained the love

that we have for each other, and that is a powerful thing. In the past couple of weeks we experienced one

of those serendipitous coincidences of time and circumstance that I suspect so many privately crave within the barely contained chaos of family, partner, work and life.

I had holidays, she had holidays, husband was away, no plans had been made and so there was just us and a whole bunch of time. We were giggling girlfriends again, with plenty of ice-cream, late nights, DVDs, heart-to-hearts and fits of hysterical laughter. We were on the lam and just us, and it has already become one of the most treasured and special times of my life.

It was time that we hadn’t had together since we were 18, between school and uni, and at liberty in a way we would never be again.

I farewelled her as she headed back to her city, thinking it’s time we will probably never spend together in that way again until we are in our 80s. But when we do, it will be as if we are 14 again, silly, high-spirited and hilarious. And feeling as safe as anyone could within the seclusion of a timeless friendship. \

Youngsters take a tumbleCheerleading is not just for teenagers, with pre-schoolers shaking their pom poms and tumbling with the Bayside Bullets. Set up last year by dancers Bridget Barfoot and Sam Barker, the club has attracted girls – and a

boy – of all ages.Classes are run at the Mathis School of Dancing in

Braeside, founded by Barfoot’s late grandmother Lynda Mathis 50 years ago and now run by her mother, Jen Barfoot.

They started cheerleading last year with 10 juniors and 30 teenagers. “Now we’ve got three times as many,” Barfoot says. Movies and TV shows such as Bring it On and Glee have had a big impact, and Barfoot is certain cheerleading, which is athletic, spectacular and fun, is set to explode in Australia. “They want to have the pom poms, they want to be thrown up in the air and things like that,” she says.

The Bayside Bullets won a level-one state title last year and hope to build on that. They also want kids to have fun, which is why they have a class for pre-schoolers aged from three to five. They love it. Among other things, the littlies learn to tumble, do cartwheels and hold pom poms.

Older girls can take it as seriously as they want.“Some of our kids who are coming through that

are showing real potential are considering going into cheerleading professionally,” Barfoot says.

Natasha Merzvinskis is at the top of her game. The talented athlete won silver at a world championship and she has her sights set on the 2016 Rio Olympics, where her speciality may be included as a demonstration sport. But many Australians don’t

think what she does is a real sport.Merzvinskis is one of 15,000 Australians into competitive

cheerleading, which is growing like wildfire and attracting girls – and some guys – of all ages. While many still see it as a support act to a male sporting team, cheerleading is huge in its own right. Underneath the glitz are some serious athletes.

Movies and TV shows such as Bring it On and Glee have boosted the sport’s popularity here while also feeding a stereotype of cheerleaders simply waving around pom poms. Competitive cheer is tough stuff. It combines elements of gymnastics and dance with lots of tumbling, backflips and jumps. Most spectacular is stunting, where a “flyer” is lifted high into the air, thrown and caught.

Competitions involve choreographed routines requiring strength, skill and flexibility. Merzvinskis’ Australian Dream Girls team won silver in the All Girl Elite section at this year’s International Cheer Union world titles in Florida. The standard was up there with what will be shown if cheerleading is accepted as a demonstration sport at Rio.

When forced to explain her sport, which happens a lot, Merzvinskis says it is highly competitive, skill-based, spectacular and fun. “It’s about teamwork,” she says. “I love the combination of dancing and gymnastics and performing. I really enjoy it because it requires so many different skills.”

Now in her eighth year of coaching, Merzvinskis, 22, is a member of MLC Cheerleading, an arm of the MLC Gymnastics Club since 2004. A former MLC student, Merzvinskas also runs cheerleading classes at Refine Cheer and Dance. “It’s really booming,” she says. “I started the school up last year, and we’ve tripled in size in one year.”

MLC is a cheerleading powerhouse. Its 130 members, some as young as six, have won nine national and five international titles. Many are gymnasts or dancers who move to cheerleading for its glamour, variety and teamwork. Most are MLC students, and some stay on after finishing school. Boys are welcome but so far none have joined.

MLC Cheerleading co-ordinator Lucinda Cunningham, 20, is a former student who won five national and four international titles before retiring from competition last year. “I always wanted to do it in primary school because I did gymnastics and I did dancing,” she says. “When I first started I had a black singlet and a netball skirt.”

While the outfits are now a sleek and professional black, white and teal top and skirt, pom poms are a rare sight at this club. MLC doesn’t compete in the pom pom division, opting for the more athletic displays. Its Elite Team has amazing skills; members lift each other high into the air, do aerial splits and spectacular backflips.

“There are so many different disciplines involved,” Cunningham says. “It’s not the same thing all the time.” Flying is the most popular job and usually given to a slight but strong girl. “I think everyone would want to fly,” she says. “I loved stunting.”

Competitive cheerleaders learn a range of skills that progress from level one to level six, with more difficult variations as they gain experience. The International Cheer Union (ICU) is the world governing body and the US-based International All Star Federation (IASF), which also governs dance (hip-hop, jazz and pom), is another major authority. It recently released 19 pages of updated rules.

Australia has two main cheerleading bodies, The Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASCF) and AusCheer, run through Gymnastics Australia. Both hold their own competitions. MLC competes under the AusCheer banner and this year will also join AASCF events. Its Elite Team is at level four and trains about five hours a week.

Alex Byers-Armstrong, 17, and Brigitte Gilmore, 15, are key

members and have competed overseas. Byers-Armstrong won a Canadian gymnastics competition and would love to compete at a world cheerleading title or cheer and study at a US college, where the sport is huge and scholarships are offered.

Gilmore was an elite gymnast and started cheerleading after watching the other girls train when she was in primary school. She was part of a 2009 team, captained by Cunningham and coached by Merzvinskis, that won a Hawaiian competition and came second in Orlando, Florida. She is one of the lucky ones who has been a flyer.

“In year 7 I was the one thrown up in the air,” she says. “It’s really fun. You just have an adrenalin rush. The first couple of times you got a bit scared, but then you learn to trust your bases. Over the years it’s nowhere near as scary.”

AusCheer held its state titles at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSASC) on August 20. The national championships will be at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on September 24-25. This year’s AASCF state titles were held at MSAC on September 11, and the national championships will be at the The Sports Centre at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on November 19 and 20.

The Melbourne-based IASF international regional director, cheer and dance coach and choreographer Rosemary Sims-James, also a cheer and dance event producer, estimates as many as 15,000 people now do cheerleading nationally, with about 5000 of them in Victoria.

Coached and choreographed by Sims-James, Australia won silver and bronze at the last ICU world championships in Florida, which drew 22,000 competitors from 73 countries. MLC’s Merzvinskis and Georgia Sinclair, 17, were part of the Australian team.

Olympic officials attended ther event, raising hopes that cheerleading could be included in the Olympics sooner rather than later. “We’ve got a big tick in nearly all the boxes,” Sims-James says.

A former world pas de deux dance champion, Sims-James has coached cheerleaders since the mid-1980s and seen the sport grow, particularly in recent years. She says it is the perfect sport for teenage girls. It caters for all types – tall, small, thin, full bodied; tall girls at the back, medium girls as bases and smaller girls as flyers. “You can enjoy being a teenage girl while doing your sport,” she says. “They can enjoy their femininity and their sparkle and favourite music … while enduring hard athletic training and competition.”

While it has come a long way, cheerleading still has some work to do before the public fully accepts it as a sport.

MLC’s Syenna Vasilopoulos, 13, a five-year veteran, is doing her bit. “They always say, ‘What team do you cheer for’?” she says of the uninitiated. “We just tell them we don’t cheer for a team.”

Adds Gilmore: “Some people just call them dancers. It’s more like athletes. Anything a gymnast can do, you can do.” \

When Ben Ward’s mates ribbed him about being a cheerleader, he had the last laugh. Ward, 20, met his partner Michelle De Boer through The Mustangs Cheerleading Club. “I got a girlfriend out of it so I’m happy,” he says.

Ward’s sister Jessy, 22, helped set up the club with Ben, Louise Middleton, Will Millar and Nick Ayers, who has since returned to America. Last year they won level four at the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation’s national titles in Melbourne.

Jessy, from Lower Templestowe, is a netballer and basketballer while Ben, from Greensborough, plays volleyball. Both say cheerleading is physically challenging but great fun. Male cheerleaders are important for lifting “flyers”, a spectacular part of the routine.

Ben was extremely reluctant when Jessy first asked him to join her. “Originally I didn’t even want to do it,” he says. “I was like no way! I came down and … had a try of it and it was really fun. Everyone gets really into it. It was a good workout.”

Jessy, who has cheered for five years, also loves it and says this has nothing to do with shows such as Glee.

“It wasn’t on when we started,” she says. The Mustangs recently moved from

Bundoora to Thomastown.

Fun is the key to successDB Dance Dynamics has held cheerleading classes for

almost four years and the kids love it. Its Epping and Whittlesea studios are popular with young cheerleaders aged seven to 14, who are learning the basic skills and

having heaps of fun.Cheerleading teacher Caitlin Pappin says the sport is

challenging, fun and full of different moves. “They learn how to stunt; they go through a lot of

teamwork exercises,” she says. “Quite a bit of gymnastics is involved with somersaults and cartwheels.”

At just 10, Paris Stewart is in her third year of cheering with Pappin, whom she says “is really good at making

up dances”. “The part I like most about cheerleading is that we do awesome stunts like throwing girls in the air,

which always looks really cool,” Stewart says. “I have also made some great friends here. We each have matching

cheerleading uniforms with pom poms.” Studio founder Debbie Balmforth says that while they

haven’t entered a competition yet, the girls are serious about it and working towards competing.

“It’s kind of like anything, you’ve got got to get your skill base happening,” she says.

OuR waiteR’s concern is palpable. We’re irritatingly slow

to order and he wants to help us. But we’ve asked for more time. He’s pacing.

It’s the menu. It’s not especially large, but there’s a lot of choice and a bit of repetition that’s confusing. Some of the daily specials are repeated on the main menu (apparently for the benefit of regulars); the pizzas all sound tempting, but some seem similar and pasta dishes vie for attention.

There’s no mystery in the restaurant’s name – 400gradi (400 degrees) is the ideal heat at which pizza should be cooked.

“It should be cooked quickly, just for 90 seconds, so it is light as air. And it should arrive on the table in minutes,” says owner Johnny Di Francesco.

Around the brightly lit, glossy room, everyone seems to be eating the house specialty. It arrives on a heavy, dark-timber board, high of outside crust and filled to its plump perimeter.

Di Francesco is Victoria’s first member of the Verace Pizza Napoletana Association – a Naples-based international body established to protect the heritage and tradition of the Napoletana pizza. There are only two accredited chefs in Australian and just 360 in the world.

Di Francesco has been making pizza since he was 12. He opened his first restaurant in Moonee Ponds, aged 19. He established Panic Pizza, a franchise chain with seven outlets, a few years later, and opened 400gradi in 2008.

His Naples roots and the association drew him back to Italy last year. “I wanted to learn more about my family’s traditions and see why it is that the people of Naples are so passionate about their pizza. What I learnt was amazing,” he says.

As part of his accreditation, Di Francesco visited the producers of the tomatoes, the fior di latte (buffalo-milk cheese), the olive oil and the flour mills to appreciate their commitment to quality.

The distinguishing characteristic of Napoli pizza, he says, is the combination of wood-fired oven, 400-degree cooking temperature and the dough-making process.

“It’s a completely natural base,” says Di Francesco. “There are no additives, no eggs, milk or sugar. The only ingredients are yeast, flour, salt and water. “

Di Francesco imports most of his ingredients, including the canned San Marzano tomatoes, and treats the water he uses to ensure it is as pure as possible.

In May, he closed 400gradi for a three-week renovation, moving into the adjoining building and adding 80 seats and a smart, well-equipped central kitchen.

So we’re here to try the pizza. And the pizza aficionado with me is looking at only that part of the menu. But I’m wavering.

We select stuffed mushrooms; a trio that arrives on a rectangular white plate, dressed with rocket. The plump mushrooms are topped with a delicate mushroom-and-herb farce and scattered with a touch of parmesan. The top is crisp, the mushrooms moist.

Next, a single skewer with two plump prawns and

a matching pair of scallops grilled to perfection. They are accompanied by a magic sauce, I assume made with those San Marzano tomatoes. Magic because it disappears so fast.

After much pizza prevaricating, we choose the Toscana with fior di latte, funghi, goat’s cheese and rocket. It’s fabulous, not for the thin-crust brigade, but delicate, airy and moist. The topping makes the centre soft, but the just-chewy outer is a good foil.

Di Francesco brought in Ivan Dell’rba as his head chef earlier this year to expand the menu. Dell’rba worked in Greece for 18 years, spent many years in Naples, and lived in Germany, Di Francesco says.

“I think he learnt patience in Germany,” he says. “I love this man. He’s been with me for six months and I’ve never seen his pulse rise. He is a master when it comes to pasta and seafood.”

The yabby linguine is excellent; simple, delicate flavours and a finely textured house-made pasta. It’s topped with two halved yabbies, still in their shells, and surrounded by copious sauce and studded with cherry tomatoes.

Our patient waiter, Renzo, steered us through the wine menu, which is predominantly Italian and divided into regions, but with a select list of Australian and French wines and a reasonable selection by the glass.

And although we’ve skipped the dolci list, he doesn’t seem disappointed. It’s been a job well done. \

Big glass windows and dark surfaces create a twinkling night-time ambience at 400gradi in its broad corner position on Lygon Street. Pavement diners grab a quick bite under the wide verandah; bigger groups inside last the distance. There’s a central kitchen that energises the room and modern, clean lines in the 150-seat layout. Timber bistro chairs, heavily hewn deep redwood on tables and engraved boards that deliver pizza and starters add a rustic edge, while the occasional cloth-covered table and quality stemware provide panache. Despite the size of the space and the polished concrete floors, noise is a pleasant hum on a midweek night. \

verdict Relaunched to bigger space, and with the addition of seafood delivered under skilled hands, the appeal of this quality pizza restaurant has been enhanced. The staff seems considerate and observant and the space is elegant and relaxed. An understanding of the restaurant’s Naples allegiance, either provided on the menu or delivered by wait staff, would add to its undoubted appeal.

Ever wondered who chooses the wine that’s served on planes? And why the wines were chosen?

It’s something I’ve often pondered as the trolley makes its way down the aisle – and with thousands of people sitting in the same seat hour after hour at any given time on a long-haul flight, I reckon I’m not alone … especially after a few drinks.

Another question I’ve thought about is, what are the people at the pointy end of the plane drinking?

I recently met winemaker Tom Carson, who is not only part of the talented team behind the Yabby Lake and Red Claw labels but is also the head of the Qantas wine selection panel.

For the past seven years, Carson has headed the selection panel that began in the early 1960s with a vision of bringing Australia’s best wines to the national carrier. On the panel with Carson are Steve Pannell, of SC Pannell wines, and Vanya Cullen, of Cullen Wines in Margaret River. “Between us we’re in touch with what’s out there – the wines we’re trying to find are wines that look good in the air,” Carson says.

So it seems that what’s good on the ground may not be good in the air and aren’t necessarily the best wines for drinking high in the atmosphere.

“What’s important is balance and texture, with softness in reds and a note of elegance and a moreish drinkability. Things that put us off are high levels of oak, tannins and acidity, which are accentuated in the air.”

You’re likely to find reds such as shiraz, pinot noir and grenache blends along with chardonnay and pinot gris on the drinks trolley. Qantas spends about $20 million

annually on Australian wine and, with the exception of Champagne in first class and a 50:50 split of Australian and Kiwi wines on the trans-Tasman routes, all the wines are Australian.

Carson and the panel get together about four times a year and taste thousands of wines – all are blind tastings, with the labels hidden to give every wine an even chance.

“To get in the line-up some wineries call Qantas, or Qantas approaches wineries, and some are wines we

So you’ve been upgraded …

If you get upgraded to business class, Tom Carson has some simple advice: “Drink and enjoy the wines. People flying first class expect the best,” he says. “But it’s the business-class list that appeals to me. Business class gives us the chance to take people on a discovery tour. That includes new regions and varietals.”

If you’re at the back end of the plane with me, you’re still likely to be introduced to new and interesting wines. “With economy class we really look for wines that over-deliver on quality,” says Carson.

Most of the wines Qantas has in the cute 187ml bottles are available at wine shops should you find something you’d be happy with on terra firma. \

identify around the traps,” he says. “Once we’ve tasted them we unveil the wines and check their provenance.”

So next time you’re in the air, whatever airline you’re travelling with and whichever class you’re in, take a moment to think about the wine you’re drinking – it’s likely to be one in a thousand. \

So

you love a bargain?

taste this

The Wanderer Pinot Noir 2010(Yarra Valley) $35; 13.5%★★★★ ½

You’ll find this being served in first class on Qantas and, if you’re lucky enough to find yourself up the top, have just the one glass of Champagne before take-off and get stuck into this. Layered, perfumed aromas of red fruits and spice lead to powerful, pure flavours of raspberry, cherry, strawberry, savoury and a hint of well-judged quality oak. It has an impeccable structure, with fine tannins and acid in harmony with the flavours. Long dark cherry and spice flavours definitely have the moreish factor.

Food match \ Potato-crusted trout fillets

Ruggabellus Timaeus 2009(Barossa) $40; 13.6%★★★★ ½

Ruggabellus is a new, tiny Barossa producer that is turning out elegant wines from top old-vine vineyards. It is doing justice to them, too. Just 804 bottles of this were produced. It’s a blend of grenache (69 per cent), mataro (16 per cent) and shiraz (15 per cent) and has a complex bouquet with perfumed raspberry, violet and thyme. It tastes like plums, earth and spice with a delightful graphite minerality, crisp acidity and fine tannins. The wine is sold out, but join the mailing list at ruggabellus.com.au to get access to the 2010 wines when they are released.

Food match \ Braised beef cheeks

Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009(Mornington Peninsula) $58; 13.5%★★★★★

Yabby Lake has 20 hectares of pinot noir vines at its vineyard on the peninsula. This displays lovely perfumed aromas of red fruits (think raspberry, cherry and strawberry), violets and lifted spice notes, which are also found on the palate along with a lovely minerality. It’s beautifully balanced; there’s an underlying intensity to the wine that doesn’t overpower the wine’s subtleties. Silky smooth, it has supple tannins and vibrant acidity. It finishes with intense cherry, plum and a slightly bitter twist that adds complexity and interest.

Food match \ Rack of lamb with a herb crust

Domaine Chandon Chardonnay 2010 (Yarra Valley) $28; 12.5% ★★★★ ½

The 2010 vintage was the first for winemaker Lilian Carter, who has produced a delicate wine that is full of finesse. The bulk of the grapes were sourced from the Upper Yarra area, which is shown in the wine’s elegance. It has layered aromas of white peach, melon, citrus – blossom and juice – and nuts, with a good flavour of lemon and nectarine that is subtle and delicate. A creamy texture and fine acidic grip lead to powerful nectarine and lemon flavours.

Food match \ Flounder with soft polenta

Blue Poles Allouran 2008 (Margaret River) $25; 14% ★★★★ ½

Winemaker Mark Gifford is passionate about merlot and cabernet franc, the grapes that dominate the right bank of Bordeaux’s Dordogne River. His skill matches that passion, and this blend of 79 per cent merlot and 21 per cent cab franc displays a delightful bouquet of raspberry, redcurrant, plums, chocolate and quality cedar oak. These aromas are replayed on the palate along with grassy notes from the cab franc. The tannin structure is perfectly pitched and fresh acid should see it age gracefully. Food match \ Roast pheasant

M ixing a love of colour with beach-inspired themes is what SunnyLIFE is all about. In fact, this fashion and accessories brand feels right at home in a laidback setting and fits in perfectly

with a casually chic summer. The Australian company recently secured a spot in

Juicy Couture outlets in the US – a huge coup for a growing brand. What’s more, it is in discussions with other overseas department stores too.

According to SunnyLIFE’s creative director and founder, Joel Bartfeld, getting into US outlets has been a long but worthy process.

“Our aim from the beginning has been to create an Australian and international brand, so we’ve been looking at overseas markets for a while,” he says.

It was SunnyLIFE that approached Juicy Couture, proving that if you’ve got a good product there is always someone willing to accommodate.

“A member of their creative team knew our product, showed it to the creative director who loved the quality,” says Bartfeld.

“We then went through the strict vendor-approval process to make sure our product met all of the US standards.”

Australian beach and entertaining culture is cleverly channelled through SunnyLIFE – the brand manages

to sum up our love of the outdoors, sand and beach, and it’s likely Juicy Couture felt an affinity for the same free spirit.

For SunnyLIFE it’s all about clothes that smell of summer (think resort-wear dresses in stripes and other viscose/cotton combinations) plus hats and bags to complete your outfit.

It even throws in some kitsch wares in the collection and tempts consumers with outdoor dining and other entertaining items as well. Fashion clearly doesn’t start and end with the wardrobe for this mini-empire; it has created an entire range of products that suit a hot Aussie summer – from what you wear to what you serve your drinks in.

Its colour palette is influenced by fashion runway shows and other seasonal trends – the big emphasis

this time around is apricot stripes, dreamy blues and other coral shades.

For summer, the selection of bags is mammoth – think canvas tote and beach duffles. From hand-woven raffia totes and clutches to a collection of lacquered-straw tailored clutches trimmed with leather, there is a size and style for every need.

Beach totes in gelato shades are mouthwatering, but we especially love the Napier lacquered-straw clutch, which is perfect for late-night soirees by the beach. Ideal for the woman who heads out and doesn’t like to carry much at all.

SunnyLIFE fashion and accessories designer Elise Miller, who was responsible for the luxury bag range of Elise Caarels, knows only too well about a woman’s summer needs when it comes to bags.

“We love the individual character of natural materials which have inspired our custom-straw weaves and exclusive canvas prints trimmed with butter-soft leathers,” says Miller.

“Our design approach reflects a respect for simplicity and timelessness punctuated with unexpected detailing and subtle pops of colour.

“We pour a lot of love into each design, with the key objective of creating beautiful product that exudes a distinctive and sophisticated contemporary style that’s a little playful, and always functional, memorable and collectable.”

For Bartfeld, this is just the beginning. He’s busy flying around the world showcasing SunnyLIFE in the hope of signing more accounts.

“Our homewares have always been fashion inspired, so a fashion collection was a natural progression,” he says. “As with all of our new categories, we were focused on delivering the best offer, combining beautiful design with the best possible quality. It took a couple of years for all of the key elements to align, so we’re so excited to bring the collection to market.”

And with a name that channels the sun, one can’t help but feel teased by its warmth.

“The word sunny has no negative connotations,” he says. “That means our target customers are optimists, people who love summer, who love entertaining and who have a sense of style.” \

SOMe Say it was photographer Frank Toskan and

salon chain owner Frank Angelo, the geniuses behind M.A.C. cosmetics, who started the innovation. Others attribute it to Pupa, the Italian make-up company that has a penchant for all things cute. Some go even further and say it was the Egyptians with their lust for malachite and soot that started the trend.

I am really not fussed who was behind the thoroughly practical and logical concept of make-up palettes. I am just joyous that someone thought of it. It would be silly not to revel in the simplicity of the design – compact, durable and everything a woman can want to do up her face in one easy package.

I am sure people everywhere wish all multitasking was made simple, like the make-up palette.

The 1980s saw a huge revival in palettes that fizzled out very quickly, but in the past few years I have noticed an increasing number of companies including them as a mainstay in their range. They allow make-up enthusiasts to build and create their own kits.

This spring there are innumerable palettes available. Here are six I think are value for money and jam-packed with multitasking goodies. Take a palette for a test drive: it might just change your life. \

The hot shot

One of Australia’s legendary press photographers, Bruce Postle, has compiled his best work in a book. PETER WILMOTH caught up with him three decades after they first worked together.

in the passenger seat was an 18-year-old cadet (me) and in the driver’s seat was a disarmingly charming and tenacious photographer with a reputation for doing anything for a great shot – Bruce Postle, or, as he as universally known, Pos.

Talk about learning on the job, not to mention a chance to beef up your clippings file.

Being a first-year cadet meant the news desk tended not to send you to the hot story of the day, so your chances of a good run were minimal. But in the driver’s seat was the cadet’s secret weapon.

As a reporter at The Age you knew that, because his hunger for that prime journalistic real estate was insatiable, when you went with Pos your story had a better-than-usual chance of being on the front page.

As we all came to expect when travelling with Pos, there were stories and pictures everywhere you looked, you just had to have the eye to see it. And he was the master of the peripheral opportunity.

Heading back from a job one day in 1985, Postle saw a group of children playing cricket beside the highway.

“I saw all these kids under a big gum tree and, even though I was an hour late for the other job, I thought, ‘I’ve got to get this picture’,” he remembers.

“I turned around and went back and waited for one of the girls to bowl. I took four pictures on a motor drive, called over the girl who was in slips and said, ‘Look, I need the names of the kids left to right’. She said their names. And I said, ‘Now I want their surnames’. She said, ‘That’s easy, we’re all the one family’. (Ten children in the Steenhuis family). The Age used the picture from one side of page one to the other under the headline ‘Steenhuis caught Steenhuis bowled Steenhuis’.”

Postle has compiled 50 years of his photographs into an extraordinary book, Bruce Postle: The Image Maker. It charts his career from his time as a 19-year-old on Queensland Country Life to a job at Brisbane’s Courier-Mail and, finally, a 30-year stint on The Age, where he made his name (he left that paper in 1996). It is the best of Bruce Postle, which is very good indeed.

I’ve met Postle, now 71, at the Armadale home he shares with his wife, Helen Duffy. It’s 32 years since we first met, and my main memory of Postle is how generous and nurturing he was to young reporters.

It would have been easy to be intimidated with all those big names at The Age, but Postle encouraged us to ask the extra question and not be thrown off guard.

In my first month in the job I was sent to interview a boxer, with Postle taking the photo. The boxer at one stage talked about “road work”. I genuinely thought he might have a second job working for the local council, instead of the running he was doing to get in shape. I asked him how he fitted everything in. There were smiles around the room at the idiot cadet (me) but Postle quietly corrected things, trying to make sure I wasn’t humiliated. You never forget small kindnesses.

Former Age editor Mike Smith put it well when he wrote in the book: “Newspaper people who wring their hands as the internet swallows their readers should be enlightened by the career of Bruce Postle. Push harder, immerse yourself in new ideas, plan more and plan earlier, get closer to your subjects, play to your strengths and never ever become a ‘nothing-in-it’ person. More passion. Do all these things and luck tends to follow.”

Postle made a lot of his own luck. With his sense of adventure and ambition for the shot, that had to happen. In 1959, aged 19, he went to work for The Courier-Mail. “They gave me a car and a press camera. I’d just got my licence and I was sent out to a fire at six in the evening. I rolled the office car 3½ times and the camera went through the windscreen. I wrote off a car and a camera on my first day at The Courier-Mail.”

He arrived at The Age in 1969 and his adventurous ways led to some collateral damage. “At The Age I wrecked 36 cameras. My worst effort was the Brisbane floods. I was in a boat and I leaned out to get a picture and went into the drink with three cameras around my neck and a camera jacket with six or seven lenses in it. I had to unzip it and throw it away because the weight was pulling me down in the water.”

Postle covered everything, from hard news to politics to sport to showbiz to the life around him. In the book Mike Smith writes: “He is great because he was always trying to capture the picture or the angle that no one had shot before … He badgered his subjects, from prime ministers and archbishops to jockeys and horse trainers, until they agreed to go that extra mile for him. He was irrepressible.”

What was his philosophy about finding the shot? “Front page,” Postle says. “Every job I did I looked at it as a front-page picture, whether it was mundane or otherwise.”

There are stories attached to every photograph. In 1965 he walked onto the stage where the Rolling Stones were playing. “Mick Jagger came right over near me, knelt down and came so close to me I had to step back to

Page 17: HDV-Heidelberg-20110914-Edition69

get him in the frame. If you tried that now you’d be put in a headlock and thrown in the river.”

His competitive spirit was unparalleled, and he never lost that fire. He was told by Jim Fenwick, a colleague at The Courier-Mail: “Bruce, if there’s not a picture in the job you are sent to cover, there’s always a better one on the way back.”

What is the skill required? “Determination to get that front-page picture.” He cites Age photographer John Lamb as another who could “pull a picture out of nothing”. “When I came down, John Lamb and I virtually ran the pictorial section of The Age for about 15 years. We were good mates away from work but best of enemies in the paper. He was out to beat me and I was out to beat him. Every day.”

How much luck is involved in photojournalism? “The more you push it the more luck comes your way,” Postle says. “And the nicer you are to people the more you’re going to get out of them.”

Postle used his considerable charm to convince people to do things they might not normally feel comfortable doing. “The thing was you’d walk into a job and you’d work out your picture first and then ask them to do it. And 99.9 per cent of them did. If you are polite to people

and you are not going to make a fool of them, they will readily do anything that you ask.”

When The Age needed a shot of politician Malcolm Fraser, Postle traced him to a dental surgery in East Melbourne. “There was nobody at the counter, so I knocked on the door and here was this big man lying back on the chair, having had a needle, and was waiting for a filling to be done,” he remembers.

“I said, ‘Excuse me, are you Mr Malcolm Fraser?’. He said ‘Yes’. ‘Bruce Postle from The Age. We need a portrait of you straight away and I can’t wait around’. The dentist came in and said, ‘What the hell’s going on? He’s just had a needle. He’s not going anywhere’. Malcolm, being the true politician, pushed himself off out of the chair and said, ‘I’ll put the coat on and go out for a quick photo’.”

Postle was the master of the “set-up”, a style that has gone out of fashion these days, giving way to more naturalism. He was asked to cover an anti-abortion demonstration at the Queen

Victoria Hospital. He saw a big portrait of Queen Victoria inside the building and approached the demonstrators and asked if they would come into the foyer so he could get Queen Victoria in the picture. “The editor turned around and said ‘Wow’. They used it from one side of the front page to another with the heading ‘We are not amused’.”

In 1988, when Jeff Kennett won a Liberal Party leadership ballot, a large media pack waited outside Parliament House. Kennett emerged to say he’d won the ballot. The cameras snapped, but Postle wanted something different. He wandered around to Kennett’s office.

“I heard him pick up the phone and heard him say (to his wife, Felicity), ‘Flicka, I’m still leader, I’ll meet you out on the steps of Parliament House in 10 minutes’.

“So I went outside and sat on the (balcony). Jeff said, ‘What are you doing here?’ I said, ‘Mr Kennett, I’m waiting to take a picture of Felicity running up the stairs’ and he said, ‘How did you know?’ I said, ‘I heard you on the phone’. I got a shot of them kissing on the top of the steps of Parliament House. Front page.”

Postle at The Age worked with all the legends, including editor Graham Perkin, who understood the value of a strong photograph.

“You’d be typing a caption and Graham Perkin would come down just before picture conference and he’d sit down beside you and he’d say, ‘Now what have you got for me today?’,” Postle remembers.

“There was a great working relationship between him and the photographers. If you had an extra special picture it was used – because he had a broadsheet paper – really well on page one.”

Postle would go to any lengths for a picture. Once he was on top of a train taking a photo of wheat containers stretching into the distance but didn’t notice the bridge

he had his back to. He dropped to his knees just in time. He was in a plane returning from photographing

the New Zealand horses for the Melbourne Cup when another plane loomed. “It missed by three metres.” Postle snapped away.

“Clive Mackinnon (from The Sun) watched me take the photos and said, “You know Pos, if the camera had survived the crash and somebody has processed the film you would have won the Walkey Award posthumously.”

Sometimes a photograph was deemed too invasive, and sometimes the emotion profoundly affected him.

In 1978 a light plane taking off from Essendon Airport crashed into the house of Sam Gulle, killing his wife, his wife’s mother and his four young children. Postle photographed Gulle watching one of his children being lowered into the grave.

“When I took that picture it was the first time that anything had got past the camera to me while I was actually taking the photos,” Postle says.

“The editor, Greg Taylor, called me in and said, ‘Bruce, you’ve got an amazing news picture, but we’re not going to run it. He’s been through enough’. It ran, with Sam Gulle’s permission, 10 months later in a story that was written about public grief.”

Newspaper photography has changed since his day. “The game’s changed. They rely too much on the public relations people. And digital photography has changed the game completely, where they walk in and blaze away and take hundreds of pictures and pick out the best one. I shot a lot less photos, worked out what I wanted and took them.”

He misses the adrenalin of daily journalism. “Right through my career I couldn’t wait to go to work. It was so addictive. Sometimes, for the hell of it, I’d go in on my days off.”

In recent years Postle has worked for the MCG and for the grand prix. He’s also done some magazine work. Malcolm Fraser asked him if he would photograph him and Gough Whitlam signing each other’s memoirs. The photo of the once-famous opponents is in the book.

“I’ve always said I’d take a camera and a laptop with me to heaven and take a picture of God opening the gates for me and email it back to Earth and it would be the only picture used on the front page of every paper in the world,” Postle says.

That, to Bruce Postle, would be heaven. \ [email protected]

the vendors of a house. They are the ones who know what it is like to live there, the ones who add stories to storeys, and even a quick circuit of the house they are about to depart unearths many a memory.

Such is the case with 17 Tetragona Way. Its façade is pleasant enough, and the delightful ball of energy that opens the door even more so. She says the house was built 15 years ago, when she was raising two boys of a similar vintage. “It was really important that the house flows,” she says.

And flow it does. The vendor has a large family, and often plays host to gatherings; her castle constantly caters to congregations of 30 or more.

Some of these fit in the formal lounge, but they’re more likely to assemble in the dining room, or the family and meals area, where there’s space to be creative with arrangements, be they floral or furniture.

Perhaps guests and residents alike would choose to lounge by the bar, or – should there be something cooking in the double oven – cluster around the enormous island counter-top like pigeons politely demanding charity.

The house seems to get bigger as you move towards the rear, as the outdoor entertainment area sashays into view. There’s a barbecue out of the line of sight but handy for the hungry hordes, and a salt-chlorinated pool that, the vendor delightedly reveals, retains its peaceful blue colour year round. Around the corner is a rumpus room, now replete with pool table, but of dimensions that would suit a media room.

Ah, but the outdoors is barely beginning. From this vantage point, tiers of dry-stone walls rise, each frosted with shrubbery – the effect is stately, yet kind, like a benevolent matriarch. Only once you’re up the steps do you see an expanse of grass, big enough for almost any variety of sports. It’s cradled by maples and pears and lent a touch of class by a nook holding two not-too-ornate chairs and a table; the vendor says it’s an excellent place for morning coffee, or to escape from noise in the house.

Back indoors and upstairs are the bedrooms. The main has his-and-hers walk-in wardrobes: “It’s so there are no arguments,” says the vendor. “Then again, I got the bigger one, which is why there were no arguments.” New owners may look forward to a pleasant squabble over ownership. There are three other bedrooms, and a bathroom that contains a laundry chute. Or, as the vendor calls it, a godsend.

“If you can’t put your clothes in the chute, they don’t

get washed,” she says. “I raised boys – if the instructions were too detailed, they’d never get followed.”

Detail, nevertheless, is demonstrated by clever touches throughout that surely merit a paragraph or two. There’s the outdoor shower, close by but out of sight around a corner. There’s the study, which is constructed in such a way as to be easily convertible into a fifth bedroom. The bathrooms are partitioned for speed and ease of access, so ablutions can take place in one section and primping in another.

And the storage! You can hide the Christmas lights and other seldom-used necessities under the house or in the roof, all in cunningly concealed panels. The speakers throughout the house are similarly unobtrusive. And that’s probably left us with just enough time to mention the private courtyard near the front of the house, where cranes swoop in to pay a visit to the inhabitants of the fishpond, and to end with a quote from our vendor.

“It’s a real family home,” she says. “It was built to live in, not to look at.” \

This E. A Watts house was built in the sought-after Heidelberg School precinct and emanates a sense of prestige, pride and charm. The rendered façade of this East Ivanhoe residence is beautifully concealed

by an English garden. The chosen colours create continuity and the flourishing entrance evokes a natural feeling.

If the E.A Watts “label” wasn’t impressive enough, use of the highest-quality fixtures would seal the deal.

Today, many of the traditional characteristics of the original No. 11 have been retained. Marble continues to dress up the residence, and the main bedroom has an en suite. This is something that is expected today but an

This well-maintained split-level house has panoramic views of the Kinglake Ranges and to the Dandenongs. Situated in the increasingly popular St Helena College zone, this residence has several indoor and

outdoor entertainment areas. When guests arrive, lead them through to the rumpus area and enjoy an aperitif at the wet bar before sitting down to dinner in the formal dining area. Close by is the new Impala kitchen, which has stainless steel appliances and a walk-in pantry. After dinner, spill out onto the balcony to enjoy the treetop views. The outdoor deck is covered by Perspex and would be ideal when the kids want to play in the backyard. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The other two bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a bathroom. This house also features ducted heating and cooling and is close to St Helena shopping square and Glen Katherine Primary School. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA

Springthorpe Estate offers more than the usual amount of parkland you would find in a residential development and has views to rival city apartment living. This Stonehaven-designed house is set on one

of the bigger blocks of the estate and comes with all the modern trimmings.

Just over five years ago, the original owners custom-built this contemporary residence to suit the land.

The formal lounge is at the front and the hallway continues through to the fully equipped home cinema. The open-plan kitchen/meals and lounge area is brightly lit.

The lounge opens onto a balcony and offers views of the landscaped front garden. If it rains, a café-style retractable roof covers the area. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, stone benchtops and a glass sliding door that opens to undercover decking. The wildlife reserve behind the property is a pretty backdrop if you want to frolic in the solar-heated saltwater pool.

All the bedrooms are upstairs. The main bedroom has an oversized en suite, walk-in wardrobe and its own private balcony with city views. Just a handful of properties in Gresswell Road can enjoy the city skyline. Two more bedrooms share another bathroom. A study and fourth bedroom, set up as a gym, both have pool views.

La Trobe University and Macleod station are nearby. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA

substantial makeover, or start from scratch on this superb block of nearly 600 square metres with a north-facing backyard and 19 metres of street frontage. While it has been unloved in recent times, the potential of the house and the block is clear. Stanley Street is quiet with no through traffic. It’s the kind of street where people don’t move on very often once they get there. Understandable, given the location. It is walking distance to Ivanhoe Primary School, train station and shops. The three bedrooms all line up on the westerly side of the house off a main hallway. The rest of the single-level dwelling contains a living and dining room, central bathroom and kitchen. It’s an uncluttered floor plan with plenty of light streaming in from the back of the house. \ EMMA HOUGHTON
