Call it a home, call it a business, call it a lifestyle, call it all three. Whatever the label, the Watson’s Creek Antique Store
is a labour of love created by its owners over the past three decades.
� e long, low-slung complex of buildings on the Eltham-Yarra Glen Road at Kangaroo Ground is made up of a main residence that has been restored and extended, showrooms and business selling antiques, second-hand goods and homewares and a licensed café seating 50 with a full commercial kitchen. A second house with swimming pool was bed-and-breakfast accommodation for several years. All this is set on about 1.2 hectares of verdant land on the fringe of Kangaroo Ground. Locals and tourists alike know the Watson’s Creek Antique Store as the gateway to the Yarra Valley.
Yet if a plan by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) – which bought the land in 1968 to be part of the Sugarloaf treatment plant – had gone ahead, the whole area would have been � ooded to create a vast dam.
Protests led by artist and environmentalist Neil Douglas put the project on the front page of the daily papers, the dam was stopped, and it remains a green-wedge area.
John and Joanne Van Eeden leased the property from
the MMBW before buying it in 1982, and this is only the second time it has come onto the market in 103 years.
Long before the word lifestyle slipped into everyday usage, the Van Eedens created this environment so they could both be at home to raise their three daughters.
A verandah extends around the entire building complex, with the main entry into the showroom, which is full of furniture, from Victorian cedar chests to tables and china plates. From here, the café at the rear of the building has views over the lake – complete with wooden rowing boat. � e lush greenery is dotted with old carts and carriages with a backdrop of native bush.
� e Van Eedens restored and extended the original 1950s two-bedroom weatherboard house with mud bricks and recycled timbers. Today it extends over three levels and has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, including an en suite, open-plan kitchen and large family room.
� e � oorplan sends you meandering from business to house, up stairs and down, all the time discovering new nooks and crannies or an interesting piece of the building’s history.
Recycled oregon beams come from Echuca, and there is cyprus � ooring and red ironbark posts from Darling Harbour. A staircase made from recycled kauri and ironbark leads to the main bedroom, which is built in an octagonal shape. Floor-to-ceiling windows and double glass doors lead to a private

The Kangaroo Ground Post Of� ce opened in 1854. The town has a general store-cum-coffee shop plus video hire, primary school, tennis club, pony club, post of� ce and Wellers Restaurant. The Memorial Tower in the Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park is one of the highest places in Melbourne. Built as a World War I memorial, it is now used to monitor bush� res .
The area is also home to several wineries such as the Evelyn County Estate with an art gallery and live jazz; Samson Hill Estate, which offers lunch seven days a week, weekend breakfast as well as functions; Redbox Winery, known for its weekend cellar-door tastings and patio for lazy afternoons; and Kings of Kangaroo Ground Winery, a small vineyard planted with early-ripening burgundy varieties, chardonnay and pinot noir planted by owner and winemaker Ken King in 1990. The vineyard has a resident eastern grey kangaroo that Ken calls “Boss”.
