Welcome to the HDC Training brochure for our 2014-15 learning year. Training or learning with HDC Training is an experience that you will find hard to match elsewhere. We are unique in having the ability to offer excellent facilities in a learning environment that is inclusive, personal, friendly and based entirely on your individual needs. Our sessions are relatively small to create an atmosphere where you can feel relaxed and comfortable. We actively encourage people from all backgrounds and welcome women, black and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and those from the LGBT community to join us.

Our associates and trainers are drawn from a wide cross section of our community, are all well qualified and experienced and have been selected by their track record of being able to share their experiences and skills whilst successfully engaging with trainees and learners. Who are we?

HDC Training Centre is the affiliate training organisation of HDC Training & Consultancy. We provide a select portfolio of quality accredited and non-accredited training, continuing professional and personal development courses in a range of subject areas. We specialise in the development and delivery of short courses to individuals, the voluntary, public and private sector.

Our training programmes are delivered as highly practical, solutions focused and action oriented workshops, seminars and training sessions. We include motivational speakers, practitioners and specialists where relevant to support and enhance delivery. HDC Training centre and main office is located and serviced by Island Arts Studio, a business and community resource space in Herne Hill, South London.

The Centre is accredited to deliver courses by City & Guilds (C&G), the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) and is a registered Online Centre.

BUSINESS ENTERPRISE

The following 1-day courses are aimed at those starting or who are already operating their own business. They are held on a Monday at the centre in Herne Hill. Course materials and refreshments are provided.

01 - Business Start Up This programme will provide you with an understanding of what is involved in starting a business, devising the business plan, a marketing strategy and cash flow forecasts.

02 - Writing a Business Plan This practical session will support you with beginning the process of writing your business plan in an acceptable business format.

03 - Presenting a Business Plan This half-day practical session will support you with demonstrating how to clearly explain your business idea, why you believe it will succeed and how to answer questions and be able to justify aspects of it.

04 - Understanding Health & Safety in Business This workshop will support you with understanding how health and safety legislation and regulations affect a business working environment. you will leave the day knowing the requirements for healthy, safe and productive working conditions, understanding the role and responsibilities of key personnel and being able to assess and manage risk.

05 - Marketing and Selling a Product or Service This workshop will help you to understand how the basics of marketing will apply to your business and understand basic selling techniques.

06 - Exploring the Financial Needs of a Business This workshop will show you how to determine sources of finance determine and monitor cash flow and understand the financial profitability of your business.

07 - The Environmental and Social Impact of your Business This session will help you to examine the possible social and environmental impact of your business, identify methods of measuring

this impact and consider why it is so important to do so.

TRAINING - IMPROVING TEACHING & LEARNING These 1- day courses are aimed at teachers and trainers in schools, colleges, the voluntary sector and those who deliver training privately or in corporate organisations. They are run on a Tuesday at the centre in Herne Hill.

08 - Train the Trainer This programme is delivered over a weekend (2 days) or over 4 weeks (Tuesday evenings) and provides an interactive and participative course that will help you to develop and improve your training skills. It will develop your awareness of a range of teaching and training skills and strategies used to plan, deliver and evaluate inclusive training, teaching and learning.

09 - Improving Teaching & Learning (Adult focus also available) This interactive and practical session will support you to review and utilise the most effective teaching and learning strategies in a real training or classroom environment. It is a highly practical course that embeds sound educational theory with demonstrations of ideas for actual session and lesson planning. Teaching Adults is also available which and explores the key principles of how adults learn in a real training or classroom environment.

10 - Dealing with and Motivating Disengaged Learners This programme will provide you with an understanding of effective practice in teaching and training to engage and motivate learners and trainees. Participants will review and develop practical skills and techniques to improve their working practice in the classroom or workshop and in one-to-one situations.

11 - Embedding Equality and Diversity in the Curriculum This course is for those who wish to develop the confidence and skills to address the need for equality and diversity issues to be embedded in the design and delivery of the curriculum. The focus is on raising participant awareness of developing E&D issues.

12 - Teaching & Learning Observations This workshop will help you to review the characteristics of effective developmental classroom observations.

13 - Assessment & Feedback This workshop will support you with embedding assessment and feedback in the learning process through examining their purpose, examining different assessment and feedback methods and how to make assessment decisions.

14 - Being a Learning Coach This one-day workshop is ideal for teachers and trainers wishing to develop their coaching style to support learners and trainees to reach their full potential. You will develop your skills based on the GROW model.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT & GROWTH

The following 1-day courses are aimed at those who wish to personally develop themselves in a range of areas. Held on a Wednesday at the centre in Herne Hill. Course materials and refreshments are provided.

15 - Introduction to Counselling This 5 day programme, delivered over 5 evenings (or 2.5 days) provides an accessible and interesting introduction to the theory and practice of counselling. It will develop your awareness of a range of counselling skills and strategies used in counselling practice and you will get a good grounding in key topics in counselling, including its cultural and historical origins; different theoretical orientations and the vital role of the counselling relationship. This courses is not suitable for those experiencing emotional difficulties and/or psychological confusion. Those interested will need to attend an interview before enrolling on the course.

16 - Personal Growth and Career Development This workshop will help you to begin the process of taking control of your life, discover your goals and aspirations and strive for new challenges.

17 - Assertiveness for Women This programme is aimed at women who want to express themselves more clearly, openly and confidently in their personal and professional relationships.

18 - Networking This practical workshop offers an understanding of the principles behind networking and how you can develop effective skills in practice. The programme practical strategies and interactive exercises that will give you the edge that successful networking offers.

19 - Body Language This session will help you to become aware of your body language and how to use it to develop your interpersonal skills. You will begin to maximise your ability to persuade, sell, present and be assertive

21 - Negotiation Skills This course is aimed at anyone who is new to negotiation or is looking to develop their core skills and confidence in this area. Negotiation is certainly not restricted to formal activities such as purchasing or selling: indeed anyone within an organisation can find themselves negotiating without even realising it.

22 - Presentation Skills This workshop will help you to develop the skill of presenting to different audiences and for different purposes. It will provide valuable tips, strategies and the opportunity to practice engaging an audience with powerful presentation techniques.

23 - Interview skills - presenting yourself effectively This workshop will help you to better prepare for interview by becoming more become aware of yours and others body language. It will look at develop your interpersonal skills and maximise your ability to persuade, sell, present and be assertive through body language.

24 - Employability and Personal Development

The Award and Certificate in Employability and Personal Development are qualifications that help you develop the key personal skills, qualities and attitudes required by employers and/or to make progress in education or training. Delivered as a 2-day programme over five weeks, these qualifications are aimed at anyone wanting to improve their employment prospects, progress in education or training or live a more independent life.

CREATIVE, ARTS AND MEDIA

The following workshops are aimed at those who wish to personally develop their creative skills. They are held on a Tuesday and Wednesday evening at the centre in Herne Hill.

26 - Introduction to Interior Design This 4-week programme delivered on a Tuesday evening is for those who have an interest in interior design and who would like to gain some basic understanding of design and practical skills. For those who wish to gain a qualification, you will need to attend two additional sessions and successfully complete a portfolio as evidence of completion of the practical work. There will be an additional fee for examination and assessment costs.

27 - Introduction to DJ'ing The definition of DJing has changed dramatically in the last decade. Laptops, controllers and software have emerged alongside traditional turntables and CDJs, smashing the barrier to entry. This 5-week programme delivered on a Wednesday evening will start with a historical overview and then move onto you learning the fundamental concept of DJing with a controller and Tractor software.

28 - Introduction to Artistic Photography Artistic photography has been described by the tutor as "using your imagination to CREATE a photo not just TAKE a photo". Delivered over 5-weeks o a Wednesday evening, you will be shown how to create a mood or depict a scene based on your creative observation of an image. Using a range of photographic techniques, your goal will be to create the photo based on the idea, mood or image you have in your mind. OWN CAMERA REQUIRED.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

INSTITUTE OF LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT (ILM) ACCREDITED COURSES

The following courses are accredited qualifications and are available for groups of 10+ delegates. Therefore they are ideal for in-house accredited training for groups of staff in settings such as

education providers and local authorities.

25 (a) - The Level 3 Award and Certificate in Leadership and Management (Positive Action pathway available) This course is ideal for the team leader, or aspiring team leader seeking to move up to the next level of management and those who want or need to gain a range of management skills and put them into practice in their own role. Participants will build their leadership capabilities and develop leadership and management skills using their own knowledge, values and motivations. The qualifications are made up of a wide range of units covering core management skills – such as understanding how to organise and delegate – plus skills in communication, team leadership, change, innovation and managing people and relationships. The programme can be delivered to suit the needs of the clients but is typically 4-days delivery over 2/3 months as two 2-day sessions.

25 (b) - The ILM Level 5 Award and Certificate in Leadership and Management (Positive Action pathway available) This course is designed for practising and aspiring middle/senior managers who wish or need to gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex nature of operational and strategic management in the context of their own sector and business environment. Participants will develop their ability to lead, motivate and inspire, provide strategic leadership as well as day-to-day management and by undertaking the course will raise their profile in their organisation. Typically delivered as three 2-day sessions over 3/4 months, the qualification is made up of a range of units developed and designed specifically for the needs of the relevant sector, client, organisation and participants.

31 - Managing conflict in the workplace Identify causes of conflict, recognise stages in the development of conflict and learn tips and strategies of how to minimise and resolve conflict issues.

32 - Introduction to coaching techniques Develop your coaching skills using a simple yet powerful framework for structuring the skills needed to motivate your colleagues, staff and teams.
