DescriptionTheprobesHD3910.1 (twoelectrodes)andHD3910.2 (threeelectrodes)measurethesoilvolumetricwatercontent(VWC)byusingacapacitivemeasurementprinciplewhichallowsfastmeasurementsinthefieldandwithminimalinvasiveness.Thethree-electrodeprobe HD3910.2isparticularlysuitableforthemeasurementinsmallvolumes,forexampleforcultivationsinpots.Theprobesarefactory-calibratedanddonotrequireanyfurthercalibrationbytheenduser.Thecircuitboardisprotectedinsideahousingmadeofplasticmaterialandsealedwithepoxyresinwhichallowsachievingreliablemeasurementseveninharshenvi-ronmentalconditions.TheRS485digitaloutputwithMODBUS RTU protocolallowstheuseofevenverylong connection cables. It can be connected to the data loggers HD32MT.1 andHD32MT.3ortoanyotherdataloggerwithRS485MODBUSRTUinput.Theprobesareequippedwithafixedcable,5or10mstandard length,withopenwiresattheend.

Volumetric water contentThemoistsoiliscomposedofasolidpart(minerals),aliquidpart(generallywater)andagaseouspart(air,watervapor).TheVolumetricWater Content (VWC) is defined as the ratio between the volumeoccupiedbythewater(Vw)inacertainportionofthesoilandthetotalvolumeofthesoilportion(V):

Itcanalsobeexpressedasapercentage(%VWC)ofthewatervolumeinthetotalvolume.Thevolumetricwatercontentisaparameterusedinhydrologyforthestudyofthehydraulicpropertiesofthesoil,andinagriculturetodeterminetheneedtoirrigatecrops.

InstallationBymeansofanaccessory,performaholeintothesoildeepenoughtoaccommodatetheprobe.Neverusetheprobetomaketheholeinthesoil,inordertoavoidmecha-nicaldamagetotheprobeitself.Oncetheholewasdone,inserttheprobecompletelyintothesoilsothattheentirehandleiscoveredbytheground:thetemperaturesensorislocatedinsidethehandle,closetotheelectrodes;thereforeitisnecessarythatthehandleisimmersedinthesoilforacorrectdetectionofthetemperature.Aftertheintroductionoftheprobe,fillintheemptyspacesbetweenthesoilandtheprobewithsomesoilmadepowder.Toobtainaccuratemeasurements,thesoilshouldbeincontactwiththeelectrodesandtheprobehandle.

Theprobecanbeorientedinanydirection,butitisadvisabletoplaceitverticallyintotheground,sotonothindertheflowofwaterdownwardandtominimizetheinfluenceoftheprobeinthesoilbehavior.

Warnings:•Theportionofsoilinwhichtheprobeisinsertedmustbeuniform,withoutexces-siveairgaps,andnottoocompactasitwouldmaketheintroductionoftheprobedifficult.

•Payattentiontothepresenceofroots,stonesorotherobjectspresentinthesubsur-facethatmaycomebetweentheelectrodesandaffectthemeasure.

•Donotuseexcessiveforcewhenintroducingtheprobe,stoavoidirreparableda-magetotheelectrodes.

•Theprobemeasuresthewatercontentofthesoilvolumeimmediatelysurroundingtheelectrodes:positiontheprobesothattherearenoobjectsclosetotheprobe,suchasmetalpolesforexample,thatmayaffectthefieldofactionoftheprobeitself,.

•Indicatethepresenceoftheprobeduringthemaintenanceoperationsofthesoil(e.g.lawnmowing,ploughing,mechanizedharvesting,etc.).

• Inordertoremovetheprobefromthesoil,grabthehandleandpull itupwards.During the extraction, remove the probe vertically, by avoiding tilt that would damage the electrodes.

• Do not remove the probe by pulling the cable.

Setting of RS485 communication parametersBeforeconnectingtheprobetotheRS485networkyoumustassignanaddressandsetthecommunicationparameters,ifdifferentfromthefactorypreset.The parameter setting is performed by connecting the probe to the PC by using aRS485/USBorRS485/RS232.Theprobemustbepoweredseparately. IfRS485/USBconverterisuseditisnecessarytoinstalltheappropriateUSBdriversinthePC.

Procedure for setting the parameters1.Startwhiletheprobeisnotpowered.2.Startaserialcommunicationprogram,HyperTerminalforexample.SettheBaudRateto57600andsetthecommunicationparametersasfollows(theinstrumentappearsconnectedtoaCOMtypeport):

DataBits=8,Parity=None,StopBits=2 Intheprogram,setthenumberoftheCOMporttowhichyouconnecttheprobe.3.Switchtheprobeon.4.Waituntiltheprobetransmitsthe&character,thensend(within10secondsfromprobepoweron)thecommand@andpressEnter.

Note: iftheprobedoesnotreceivethe@commandwithin10secondsfrompo-weron,theRS485MODBUSmodeisautomaticallyactivated.Insuchacase,itisnecessarytoswitchoffandpowerontheprobeagain.
