5 community library’s serve the 45,000, people of the east coast district. The Gisborne library has a long history, it first, opened in a courthouse room when there where no road’s over land and visitors came by boat or by horseback to the district . As the library grew it moved various sights until stopping in 1976 when a family funded a building in remembrance of their father. It is a classic example of the 1960s and has adapted to the information technology we have today.

Interesting facts

The HB Williams memorial library, is called that because the family who donated it, in remembrance of their father it is named after their father HB Williams.

The building is around 1960 years old.

The library survived the 2007 earthquake.

The HB Williams memorial library was named after heathcote Beetham Williams.

The library was named after him because

he adored Gisborne and the family wanted him to be remembered. He was born in 1868 in Hastings and he died on 3 May 1961.

In 2007 on the 20th of December Gisborne had a massive earthquake at 8.55pm and it measured 6.8 on the Richter scale. The library was a mess and took a long time to clean up .

Heathcote Beetham Williams The HB Williams memorial library was named after heathcote Beetham Williams. The library was named after him because he adored Gisborne and the family wanted him to be remembered. He was born in 1868 in Hastings and he died on 3 May 1961The family of H.B Williams were very rich and donated £70,000 which was quite a lot back then. They wanted a memorial to him to be one that would bring the great benefit to the community..

Stained glass

In 1993, the window measures 39.5 square meters, completely covering one end of the building. Ninety five percent of the glass is handblown, Stained glass window handmade glass selected in the United States of America by designer Steve Hutton. Maori kaumatua monitored construction, ensuring the window was historically and spiritually correct. The design informes the time and development of Tairawhiti.
