Holland Geiten Melk B.V. is responsible for the collection of goat milk for HB Food Group

B.V.. The goat milk is collected from professional goat farms. All goat farms are located

in the Netherlands. Annually more than 20 million kgs of goat milk are being collected.

• ConstantmonitoringbyCOKZ

(the Dutch controlling authority for milk and milk products)

In close collaboration with its suppliers, HGM strives for the highest possible quality of its goat milk.

Therefore the goat milk is constantly monitored by the COKZ, from goat farmer to manufacturer.

• Highestqualityofgoatmilk

To guarantee the highest possible quality of the goat milk all goat farms work according to a chain-quality

system, known as ‘Kwaligeit’ (or Qualigoat) and the quality system of Holland Geiten Melk. This quality

system covers all aspects of the production of goat milk: milking and storage, cleaning and disinfection,

environment and waste, animal feeding and water, use of medicines and well-being of the animals.

• Ourgoatmilkisknownforit’sexcellentquality,tasteandscent

The quality of each product is determined by the raw materials of which it is made. The goat milk of the

Holland Geiten Melk goat farms is collected several times per week and processed immediately. As a

consequence a high quality product with a mild taste and scent is guaranteed.

The Dutch goat milk sector has developed rapidly in the past years. Between 2000 and

2007 the annual growthwas approximately 11%. InTheNetherlands there are about

320 professional goat farms. Together they produce some 140 million kg of goat milk

annually.Worldwidethegoatmilkproductionamountstoapproximately14billionkg,

makingtheNetherlandsoneofEurope’smostprominentproducersofgoatmilk.

• The goat milk in The Netherlands is collected and processed by 7 processors, both privately-

owned (of which HB Food Group B.V. is the largest) and co-operatives.

• The production of cheeses (soft and hard) consumes 60% of the Dutch goat milk production.

Some 25% of the milk is sold in liquid and the remaining 15% is being used for the production of

milk powder and other products.

• In the Netherlands most of the goat milk is produced by the white Saanen goat.

• Due to genetic predisposition of Saanen goats the average production level is increasing gradually.

In 2009 the average milk production was 800 kg per goat per annum.

• There is a trend towards larger farms (>1000 goats). A growing number of farms apply

“continuous milking”.

• Digestibility

Goat milk is easy to digest. The fat in goat milk is relatively high in fatty acids with short and mid-sized

chains, which are easy to digest. Its small milk-fat globules and small protein particles make it easy for

enzymes to digest the milk. In addition, the protein of goat milk forms a softer curd in the stomach than

that of cow milk. This also facilitates digestibility.

• Cowmilkproteinallergy

Many people suffer from a cow milk allergy. About 30% of these people allergic to cow milk protein can

digest goat milk without any problems. Commonly this is a combination of different factors.

It is suggested that they benefit from the lower as1-casein content in goat milk.

• Lactoseintolerance

The enzyme lactase is responsible for lactose digestion. People suffering from lactose intolerance are

missing this enzyme. Because the lactose content of goat milk is lower than that of cow milk, goat milk is

generally better tolerated than cow milk.

• Bronchialtubes

Drinking goat milk leads to less mucus production than with cow milk. This can mean a relief to people

with respiratory complaints.

• Skinproblems

In analogy with respiratory problems, a large number of stories in circulation claim that goat milk can

provide relief from skin problems. However, most of these stories lack any scientific proof. Nevertheless,

goat milk is often a constituent of cosmetic products.

• Exclusivity

Today consumers are looking for special food products: products that are unique, healthy and sensible.

Dairy products from goats meet this desire perfectly.

• Taste

Many consumers prefer the taste of dairy products from goats to that from cows.

• Image

The Dutch goat milk sector is clean and animal friendly. More consumers choose fair and sensible foods

items and therefore prefer goat dairy.

• Vitamins&Minerals

Goat milk is a good source for vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin and vitamin B12. Also calcium, phosphorous,

magnesium, zinc and iodine are present in relatively high concentrations. It is a poor source of iron and folic

acid. Some studies have shown that the absorption of minerals (such as iron) from goat milk is better than

in cow milk. However, vitamins and minerals need to be added to baby and children’s foods, to make sure

the amount of vitamins and minerals is exactly right for the proper development of the baby.
