Happiness & FulfilmentA child’s happiness and sense of fulfilment are vital if academic success, sporting achievement and artistic talent are to thrive. At Hazelwood, each child is encouraged to discover his or her potential through supportive teaching, creative activities and superb facilities. Underpinning our academic programme is the philosophy that happy children approach challenges with enthusiasm and are inspired to try new things.

Old Hazelwoodians reflect the school’s breadth of opportunity and vision. Alumni include generations of varied professions: lawyers, business executives, musicians, diplomats, and scientists. Nonetheless, they all share the same imagination, determination and confidence.

We offer not only modern classrooms and state-of-the-art science and technology labs, but also a 220 seat theatre, a heated indoor swimming pool, an art studio with kiln, a multi-purpose sports hall, sound-proofed music rooms, a dance studio, tennis courts, an all-weather cricket strip and extensive playing fields.

One of our core aims is to develop within our children a love of learning and life. We want their young lives to be lived to the full and, in partnership with parents, to ensure that their childhood is a rich and wonderful experience.

Our teachers are passionate and make learning an exciting journey. We regularly review our curriculum and methods to ensure that we combine the latest techniques with our traditional work ethic to encourage the naturally inquisitive minds of pupils.

Children’s abilities are recognised, developed and rewarded. Their talents are nurtured beyond the classroom with plenty of musical, dramatic, artistic and sporting opportunities. As well as the traditional games of netball, hockey, football, rugby, cricket, tennis, lacrosse and rounders, we also offer gymnastics, trampolining, athletics, judo and golf.

Regular school outings and field trips complement classroom teaching and strengthen our holistic approach to learning.

By creating curiosity and setting inspiring challenges, we encourage pupils to excel in all areas, while growing in independence and maturity. Small class sizes and specialist staff ensure that pupils make excellent progress.

We foster close relationships with parents, providing regular informal opportunities to chat to staff, half-termly assessments of effort and attainment, formal parents’ evenings and comprehensive reports at the end of each year. Hazelwood is not an academically selective school, although we need to be sure that each child can access our full curriculum. Our compassionate learning support staff provide extra help for children with mild to moderate learning difficulties who do not require a specialist school.

Staff can provide valuable advice on the transfer to senior education and we have an excellent record of securing places at both independent and grammar schools. These institutions are thrilled to receive applications from children with the Hazelwood grounding and many of our pupils achieve academic, sporting, artistic or all-rounder scholarships.

Hazelwood’s Christian foundation is the cornerstone of the school’s ethos. We encourage pupils to develop a sound sense of morality, thinking beyond their own boundaries. Through links with the wider community and fundraising for charitable causes, students are inspired to demonstrate compassion for those less fortunate and respect for their environment.

Our sports programme provides a great platform to develop the qualities of respect and fair play. Pupils learn to win with modesty and to lose with grace. Children are encouraged to support one another, whatever their ability, and we provide every child with the opportunity to improve and to represent the school.

Every child at Hazelwood is encouraged and supported to flourish in his or her own way. An average class size of just fifteen pupils, combined with highly qualified teaching staff, enables us to provide a bespoke education for each child.

A huge range of opportunities with which to engage, combined with inspirational staff, means that students are bound to discover subjects and activities that interest them. At Hazelwood, we are not obsessed by statistics and results, but rather by developing the unique talents of each and every child.

Through nurturing children’s individual strengths and interests, their confidence grows and they develop into increasingly mature and responsible students, able to think and learn for themselves.

From the toddler’s first day at The Larks to the confident teenager in Year 8, Hazelwood provides stability and continuity, giving children an important sense of belonging.

Pupils and staff – including teachers, administrators, caterers and the maintenance team – have strong relationships with each other, based on mutual respect, and the children benefit enormously from this social cohesion. Pastoral care is extremely important to us and we do our utmost to create a warm, welcoming and happy learning environment.

Above all, what really matters in any school are the people. We are justifiably proud of the care and dedication Hazelwood staff members show towards our pupils. The results of these efforts are equally pleasing – bright, confident, polite and cheerful children, who make Hazelwood a very rewarding place to be.
