PRINCIPAL COMMENTS: PAUL JORGENSEN
Congratulations to the HNPS boys’ basketball team for their great effort at the Latrobe Valley Division competition today. All the boys enjoyed their games and were very supportive of each other during the games. Overall HNPS finished 2nd.
They had a narrow win against St Kieran’s winning 25 to 24 in the first game. Suffering from early nerves, they were behind early in the first game but they were able to settle and come away with the win. The second game was close early against Grey St. Traralgon and after a few injuries, Grey St. were able to set up a commanding lead. Although HNPS were able to fight
back they went down 42 to 26. The third game against Morwell park was a fun game as some children from both teams knew each other. The HNPS team were also trying to give everyone a chance to score for the team so were very supportive of each other. HNPS eventually ran out winners 36 to 17.
Another reminder that all children must be wearing hats at all times when outside at school. If a child does not have a hat they will have to play in the undercover area.
WOOLWOOOORRRRTTTTHS EAAAARRRRN & LEARN PROGRAAAAM is continuing and Hazelwood North Primary School is participating. If we receive enough stickers we
could earn for our school some amazing equipment just by shopping at Woolworths
from Wednesday 26th July until Tuesday19th September.

Next week in Maths we will be covering the topics of;
• Number • mass • money
At home you could practise identifying, ordering and counting coins.
In Reading we will be looking at the reading strategy making
inferences, beginning and ending sounds and rereading to make
sure what we read makes sense. Please make sure your child is
bringing their reader to school on a daily basis so they can change their reader. We
also encourage parents to be listening to their child read on a regular basis.
In Inquiry we will be starting to make our simple machines.
• Please make sure your child has a hat at school. Miss Waite has a number of hats in her classroom with no owners!
• Miss Waite’s grade has take home spelling words to practise. Testing is on Friday.
• Miss Waite and Miss Stockdale are currently completing reading and maths testing. Over the next few weeks, at times both grades will be working
together.
We had great fun during our Book week activities. Below are some pictures of our
fun day.
Book Week Activities Day
Read Every Day.
Last Friday we celebrated Book Week and Read
Every Day starting with grade parades in the
Hall at 9.00am followed by a rotation of special
activities after recess. As the photos show there
were many famous book characters present in
our Hall that morning!
After recess all students participated in three of
the six activities organised by our Book Week presenters Riley A, Connor C,
Hunter, Riley M, Ashton, Archer, Hugh, Jada, Zoe, Melina (standing in for Zoe on
the day), Shanae, Olivia P, Ashlee and Jayla. Our presenters had spent much of
their lunch and recess time during the last few weeks designing, planning and
organising an activity based upon the theme of their chosen book. Their
enthusiasm and leadership shone through in the activities encouraging everyone
to enjoy the day!

Next week in Mathematics we will be revisiting angles, multiplication and
problem solving. Students have been developing their ability to deepening their
understanding of mathematical concepts through dialogue – that is talking.
Effective dialogue is not simply telling others what you think about something, but
explaining what you think and giving reasons why you think a certain way. This
also means you need to understand what the question is, think about what it is
asking you, choose a strategy to approach the question and check your answer
carefully to see if you got it right. A way that you can help your child develop their
thinking and problem solving skills is to ask them about the question and to show
or create evidence to support their point of view. Here is a question you can use to
practise: Robbie's teacher bought red and white paint for a class art project. She
spent $51.00 on red paint and $17.00 on white paint. How much did the paint cost
altogether? How much change did Robbie get from $100? In Writing next week students will be exploring procedural
texts. A fun way to practise this is to ask your child to
write instructions of how to put on a jumper, then you can
follow the instructions exactly! The use of verbs
(action/doing words) and adverbs (words that tell you how
the verb is done) are a key to procedural texts. For
example, softly cracking open an egg is quite different to smashing open an egg.
In Reading we will be focussing on the Café strategies of using word parts to
determine the meaning of words as well as using dictionaries, thesauruses and
glossaries to expand our vocabularies. For example, you can determine the
meaning of words like unlikely by breaking them into parts. Likely means there is a
chance of something happening and the prefix un means “not”. When combined,
you have the meaning of not likely. Encourage your child to try this with new and
unfamiliar words and to list as many words with similar word parts to see if they
can notice any patterns.
In Inquiry on Friday this week, we have started creating designs of toys or games
that we can make as part of our simple machines unit. Next week we will hopefully
be making our toys or games and students may be asked to source some materials
from home. We may also benefit from some hands on assistance on Friday with
putting together our toys and games so please let us know if you are available from
9am – 11am Friday morning. If you are, please make sure that your Working with
Children Check is up to date and that the office has a copy prior to the day.
Once again, have a safe weekend and enjoy any warmer weather as we head into
spring!

Maths
In Mathematics we will be reviewing topics covered this term: We will continue to focus on fractions and time. We will also be converting television program viewing times into fractions.
With your child, continue to practise converting fractions to decimals and percentages and reducing fractions using the greatest common factor.
4/8 = 2/4 = 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%
3/12 = 2/6 =1/3 = 0.3 = 30%
Students can log onto:
Follow the tutorials then complete examples from the site.

Language
Our focus in Writing will be Commas and Information Reports. Students must read at least four times a week. Please monitor your child’s reading. If this is not happening, make a time to ensure your child reads. Most students have added their new spelling words on SeeSaw. Please help your child learn their words. If your child has not uploaded their words, encourage them to do so at home or please message their teacher so this can be rectified at school.
Inquiry
Students have completed their flow charts and model designs. They have commenced constructing their models. Have your child organise their building materials in preparation for next week.
