Telling Our Family Stories: Hazeldale Families

Our inspiration is the book titled In My Family/En Mi Familia by Carmen Lomas Garza. The last three years, Hazeldale families have contributed stories and pictures to be published into books. The steps followed are on page two of this document. Below are the links to those publications. We also have copies in our library and in the front office for you and your family to enjoy. 2012-2013 https://share.shutterfly.com/share/received/welcome.sfly?fid=2f2156753e139fa0&sid=0IbOWrls5csWLk 2013-2014 https://share.shutterfly.com/share/received/welcome.sfly?fid=87ed1c92e0211824&sid=0SZsmbNy3bubg 2014-2015—*NEW* https://share.shutterfly.com/share/received/welcome.sfly?fid=7c7242754f400777cf4ab00f16ca9e1e&sid=0SZsmbNy3bugA

Telling Our Family Stories: Hazeldale Families

1. READ

Read the book In My Family/En Mi Familia by Carmen Lomas Garza with your family. We have books at the materials tables for you to read if you haven’t already read the book.

2. CONNECT Encourage your family to make connections to the text. Does the story remind you of something you’ve done? Talk about the connections. Write your connections on the wall charts around the room. Read the connections others have made. Talk about their connections.

3. PLAN YOUR STORY—ORALLY Think about your own family story. Tell the story as your children draw pictures of the story. Have your children tell the story, too. Practice the story orally several times as kids draw.

4. MAP YOUR STORY—WRITTEN Think about your own family story. Use the story map to develop a beginning middle, and end. Talk with your children about what happens first, second and so on. Use the planner to develop the outline of your story.

5. REVISE YOUR STORY Read the story out loud several times. Does it make sense? Are there words you could replace with more descriptive words? Depending on the age of your children, you could also look at the word charts around the room. You might even reread parts of the book for word ideas.

6. FAMILY PICTURE If you haven’t had a family picture taken, make sure you do before you leave. Your picture and story will be published in our school book: Hazeldale Families.

7. PUBLISHING Put your drawings and story in the “To Be Published” basket along with a FAMILY LABEL. Paperclip everything together so we can scan the illustrations, type up your story for our book and include your family picture. Your work will be returned to your family, so make sure your family label has your child’s name and teacher’s name. You may also email your story and/or picture to Mrs. Tran [email protected]

8. MAKE ANOTHER STORY Some stories may be very short. If you have time, feel free to write another story!

THANK YOU for sharing your family stories with each other! J
