Hay Buildings and People The following pages will mainly consist of Census and Directory entries for the streets of Hay. I have attempted to match the census entries to the properties concerned but this is far from straightforward, often impossible. There will be many mistakes and I will be happy to hear from anyone to rectify these. The streets of Hay have been re-named and re-numbered at various times. The census enumerators have travelled the streets in either direction or back and forth and side to side. Many houses were sub-divided or sub-let. Often the houses are not numbered but I have put my suggestions in brackets. There is much more work to do to unravel these anomalies but this is only the first attempt. I will be reading the wills of Hay to find more information and also would be pleased to see any deeds or documents relating to ownership of any Hay properties. Please go to the website contact page to let us know what you have. 1 Bear Street The Maddy family had a grocers shop here. The Maddy family had a grocers shop here. It was started about 150 years ago and was called Kennedys at first, later altered to Maddys. They had a bakehouse where the British Legion Club is now and made all their own bread and cakes, the baker being Mr Pitt. Some of the bread they made supplied Hay Work House. Mr Maddy retired 30 years ago, letting it to a grocer, Mr Dimbylow but it was changed to an antique shop about 1992. Number one seems to be the shop and the house behind and attached to Bullring Antiques

The Bear Inn Grade: II Date Listed: 2 January 1988 Cadw Building ID: 7274

The Bear Inn is a timber-framed two-storey building dating from the 16th or 17th century. The Bredwardine and Whitney Turnpike Trust minute book records two meetings at the Bear in 1768 and 1770, the house of Edward Drew at the sign of the Bear. In 1771 the property was owned by Edward Allen, Attorney at Law. In his will he left the Bear to his son William. The will stated: " .... also I give to my said son William .... all that messuage or tenement with the outbuildings thereto belonging and adjoining called and known by the name of the Bear now in the possession or occupation of Edward Drew and Mr John Jones." The Bear was in the hands of the Watkins family for many years, William Watkins having it by 1830. The 1841 Census was the first which gave any useful detail. Each householder gave their name, age, profession, and indicated y(es) or n(o) whether they were born in the county of Breconshire. Later censuses gave details of relation to head of household, whether married, single or widowed and place of birth. The following is the raw data as transcribed from the entries published on Ancestry.com If there is a ? (question mark) against an entry then the transcription is uncertain and is a best guess. There are many entries that are difficult to transcribe and I am sure that some are incorrect. If you know the correct transcription then please tell us on the contact page..
