Message from the Executive Director

HAWTHORN HILL’S MISSION

Hawthorn Hill and Bidwell Riverside Center have now been partnering since November 2015. The partnership involves cost sharing the Executive Director position and our newest position —

Development/Public Relations Director. We also have several Board members that have been serving on both Hawthorn Hill and Bidwell Boards.

Both Hawthorn Hill and Bidwell focus on life-changing assistance to homeless and underprivileged individuals and families. Both also share roots with the United Methodist Church as well as being United Way of Central Iowa partner agencies.

We have been working diligently on creating a long-term partnership through the creation of a Membership Services Organization (MSO). It is planned that the MSO will be in place January 2018. An MSO is a nonprofit, 501 © (3) organization that exists to provide management and administrative services to multiple organizations.

The creation of the MSO will enhance both organizations’ financial stability and expand capacity. The MSO will house management/administration and fundraising/public relations activities and expenses. Hawthorn Hill and Bidwell will each pay their share of the MSO expenses. Hawthorn Hill and Bidwell will continue to operate financially independent of the other with the exception of shared administration expenses. Both will continue to have their own unique identity and programs for those in need.

Thank you so much for all you do to support our mission of helping families with children acquire permanent housing and achieve a level of financial independence.

Sincerely,

HAWTHORN HILL

Sponsoring a healthy, child-friendly, weekend meal is a great way to help our families during their stay at New Directions Shelter. Providing some sense of normalcy during this difficult time in their lives is important to helping them back on their feet. A healthy meal offers a small sense of security and feels a little bit more like home.

Weekend meals can be prepared outside of the shelter for approximately 8 adults and 18 to 20 children. Meals should be delivered to the shelter by 4:30 of the designated day. Please contact Melanie Wright at 515-244-9748 or [email protected], for additional information. Thank you!

A Multi-Family Property for The Home Connection Program!

Future home for homeless familiesSo far, we have received two grants towards the $148,577 renovation project: Polk County Housing Trust Fund - $54,900 and Great Western Bank - $10,000. To make this project successful, we need your financial support! With your help, we will make this property family ready and a showcase for the neighborhood! Please help us provide much needed affordable housing!

Hawthorn Hill is doing all we can to serve more homeless families and help them achieve self-sufficiency. Through our The Home Connection program, we have been tremendously successful

assisting our families with gaining financial independence. To increase our success in supporting families, we acquired another property during 2016 for The Home Connection program.

The run-down property is currently a 6-plex and consists of four 1-bedroom and 2 efficiency apartments. Starting this July, we will be converting the building into three 2-bedroom apartments which will provide much needed housing for homeless single mothers with 1 or 2 children. The building will require a complete interior and exterior renovation.

Juanita knew that the only way to save herself and her children was to leave Texas and all of the negative influences behind. She and her two

children arrived in Des Moines in 2013 and landed at House of Mercy where Juanita entered and successfully completed the 5-step residential chemical dependency treatment program.

In September of 2015, Juanita’s family joined the Home Connection Program to begin the second phase of this journey. Finally having a place to call home, Juanita now had the stability and the time to plan for her family’s future. She enrolled in the social worker program at DMACC and went to work, literally, getting a job waiting tables part-time while attending classes. Her goal: to be a chemical dependency counselor.

Having graduated from DMACC in 2015, Juanita then began her specialized curriculum at Grandview University to continue studying for her chemical dependency counselor degree. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work in May of this year and is currently employed full time as a chemical dependency counselor at Bridges of Iowa, where she interned while going to school. The future is looking brighter every day for Juanita and her family. As Juanita continues to work on paying down her debt and saving for a new, more reliable vehicle, she is also committed to giving back to her community by volunteering when she can at House of Mercy and speaking and advocating on behalf of those battling chemical dependency issues. In the spring of 2018 she will begin studying for her Master’s degree in Social Work.

Juanita’s children are also doing very well. Her 8 year old daughter enjoys elementary school and is an excellent student. Her son graduated from high school this year. Right now both kids are enjoying the summer!

Telisha has been a part of United Way’s HOPE Initiative, which Hawthorn Hill is in collaboration with, since September 2015. Telisha became a

part of HOPE while she was living at New Directions Shelter. Telisha had arrived at the shelter with her daughter TeAsia in July 2015. She was employed and had a goal of starting school in the fall at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Telisha showed the motivation and initiative while at the shelter to be a successful candidate for the HOPE Initiative so the referral was made for the self-sufficiency program. Thanks to the coordination of services between the shelter staff and HOPE, Telisha and TeAsia were able to move into an apartment of their own.

Almost 2 years later, Telisha and her daughter will successfully be exiting the HOPE Initiative. Telisha has been able to maintain the same apartment she moved into after exiting the shelter. Several months after moving in, she was approved for Section 8, and thankfully the landlord was willing to accept the voucher allowing them to stay in their home. Through Section 8, Telisha has become part of a new program that will help move her towards home ownership through a combination of case management services and home ownership and financial literacy courses.

Telisha is still attending DMACC and has been passing all of her classes. She’s on track to graduate spring 2018 with a degree in Surgical Tech. TeAsia is a happy, healthy 10 year old who continues to do well in school and stays very active. They have a very strong mother daughter relationship that has been so beneficial for both of them during this part of their journey. We look forward to seeing Telisha continue down this path of self-sufficiency and success.

8th Annual Art & More for Shelter Fundraising

Event a Success!

Hawthorn Hill held its 8th annual Art & More for Shelter event on April 20th at West End Architectural Salvage in Des Moines. The event

raised over $33,000 to benefit Hawthorn Hill’s New Directions Shelter and The Home Connection programs. The United Methodist Women were recognized during the event for their consistent and generous aid which has been a cornerstone of Hawthorn Hill since its inception.

The event featured a silent auction which included one of a kind art and various bid packages. The auction would not have been possible without the many art donations from local artists and donations from businesses for the bid packages. Local musician Patresa Hartman shared her musical talent throughout the event, and kindly donated an evening of live music to the silent auction.

Two families in The Home Connection program spoke at the event about their personal episodes of homelessness and how Hawthorn Hill provided the assistance they needed to start working towards self-sufficiency and financial independence.

So thank you again to all of the very generous artists, donors, volunteers and attendees for a great evening. A special shout out to our sponsors for the event: GuideOne Insurance, Nationwide, American Equity Investment Life Insurance Company, Great Western Bank, Davis Brown Law Firm, Bankers Trust, Elite Eye Care, LMC Insurance & Risk Management, RSM US LLP, Ryan Staiert Interior Design, Toftech Consulting, Inc. Ten Corp, Inc. and Bill & Jean Fajen.

Hope to see you all next year!

Tayo and his children were referred to The Home Connection a little over 3 years ago. The referral came from an employee with Des Moines Public Schools after

she learned Tayo was being evicted from his apartment. He had been living in a studio apartment with his five children, and unfortunately the landlord didn’t have any other choice.

Tayo showed a lot of excitement about coming into the program and set many goals for himself and his family. He has been incredibly open to working with the staff of Hawthorn Hill and works very hard at creating and meeting his goals. Tayo became employed with a company within the last year that pays a livable wage for his family, and he has become much better at managing his finances. His five children are doing great, and his oldest son Fiyin, just finished his first year at Iowa State University. He had been accepted to Iowa State University with an academic scholarship and he plans on getting a degree in engineering.

Also during Tayo’s time with The Home Connection, he and his children became United States citizens. Tayo had emigrated from Nigeria five years ago, and his children came a couple years after that. He worked incredibly hard studying for his citizenship exam and passed within the last year. Tayo is headed down the path of financial independence and we are excited to see what comes next for this family.

Shanta and her 5 children arrived at New Directions Shelter in March of 2017. She had recently been evicted from her previous apartment in January and was fleeing

domestic violence. Shortly after her arrival staff learned she was pregnant with her 6th child. With such a large family and a recent eviction it quickly became clear that Shanta had some significant barriers to overcome when it came to housing. These barriers didn’t stop her from hitting the ground running. She followed up on resources provided by staff at the shelter and was also referred to the Rapid Rehousing Program through Primary Healthcare that would provide several months of rental assistance.

Shanta also knew she would need to gain employment to be able to maintain her home when the assistance through Primary Healthcare was concluded. She was able to get hired full time with a local employer and has maintained that position. Thankfully her child care was already taken care of through assistance from United Way, and they were able to be enrolled as soon as she started her job. Due to Shanta’s full time hours and picking up the kids, it was difficult for her to also find time to search for housing. Primary Healthcare’s Housing Navigator and New Directions Shelter’s staff were able to communicate information during the day while Shanta was working to help her make appointments to view different housing options. As time went on, Shanta’s barriers seemed more formidable than staff had originally anticipated and she was having no luck finding appropriate housing. Finally a 3 bedroom home became available and with a little persuasion from Primary’s Housing Navigator the landlord was willing to accept Shanta even with the recent eviction and her family size.

Shanta entered the shelter unemployed and with significant barriers to secure housing. Due to her hard work as well as the coordination of services between Primary Healthcare and New Directions Shelter she has overcome those barriers. She will be exiting the shelter with a full time job, her kids enrolled in safe child care, and into a place of her own, large enough for her family’s size.
