Far apart from the “friend- ly confines” of Dodge Gym- nasium, just down the road a hike is the new WHS colise- um. The gym was packed to the rafters at the end of the last workweek. Fans came out from under the woodwork, from Exeter and Exeter’s sur- rounding towns, from Hamp- ton and the towns situated in SAU21. If crowd noise is ever a factor in high school sports, it is with this annual classic. Exeter struck first in what would be their 15-4 rout in the preliminary quarter via a dunk from their star, junior forward Jon Pike. Pike would go on to score a game-high 25 points for Exeter and in the first, as in throughout the remainder of the game, he proved to be the unstoppable force to combat the Warriors’ immovable object. Netting 10 points in the first eight minutes, WHS as a team didn’t overcome Pike’s individual score until 6:31 remained in the third (the Bluehawks took their first timeout at that juncture). The score at that point flashed 33- 22 on the three commercially- laden, brand new boards high above the new parquet. It was at that very point that the hometown team began to make a run for it. A 6-2 run in the favor of the Warriors lead the game clock down to 4:06 when EHS’s Mike Fleming drained one of two from the line. A back-and-forth game till the buzzer at the end of the third, Winnacunnet had final- ly brought themselves closer to Exeter’s score having put away 24 of 32 minutes already. The gap after the first was 11; after the second it was 20. Emerging from the third quarter WHS was within ten.
