HISTORY OF MARdLE INDUSTRY OF EAST TENNESSEE: Page 65
It was the rich chocolate and variegated marbles th,-t first attractedattention, and these soon became popular for interior decoration andfurniture. of late years, the pink and gray marbles are chiefly in demand, owing to their more massive structure, soft colors and more completecrystallzati on , which permits a higher polish.
QUARRYING IN HAWKINS COUNTYThe Hawkins county marbles were the first to attract notice abroad, and
accordingly the earliest systematic operations took place in this county. For thcs account of the beginnings of the Hawkins County operations wej?
are indebted chiefly to SAFFORD
.
The first person to call attention the Marbles cf the Tennessee valleyseems to have been Dr. Troost, the first State Geologist i83i-i840, thoughvery little appears in his reports concerning these deposits. he seems tohave recognized their importance, however, for he took an active part in
organizing the Rogeksville Margle C ompany, the first systematic effort in
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MARBLE INDUSTRY IN THE STATE . RhE ROGERSVILLEMarble Company, formed in April 1838, with ORville Rice, as presidentand S. D. Mitchell as secretary, opened a quarry about 7 miles north of
rogersvil e, erecteo a mill and operated on a limited scale for severalyears. Their output, whi;h amounted tc several thousand dollars annually, was distributed mostly in EAST TENNESSEE.
In 1844- the company was scld to Mr. Rjce, who tonti nueo the businesson a moderate scale for many years being still in business, accordingto Safford, in i869. Mr. Rice now cook vigorous steps to extend the useof Tennessee marble, and about this time segan the construction of a lagrebrick tavern on the stage road about 4 M1LES southwest of Rcgersville,
which he called "Marble Hall' 1
, the interior of which was richly andprofusely decorated with marule mantles, shelves, steps and wainscoting. This building, whjch later became a private residence, was re ally, asSAFFORD states, "A Museum of the finest marble East Tennessee affords."For many years it was one .f the noted landmarks of the region, gut wasDESTRjYED BY FIRE A FEW YEARS SINCE. Wh EN THE D4 FFERENT STATES WERE ASKEDTO SUPPLY BLOCKS OF THEIR BEST STONE F.jR THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT IN I 848
,
TWO BLOCKS WERE CONTRIBUTED FROM TENNESSEE. MR. RlCE SENT A BLOCK uF THE"LIGHT MOTTLED STRaWSERHY VARIETY." AS HE TERMED IT, CALLED THE "HAWKINSCGUNTY BL0CK2, bearing the inscription. -'FR^m Hawkins CcuntyTennessee. The other termed the "Tenn State Block" was se.*t t*—*&t by Act of thelegislature. these blocks were floated down the tennessee river toCHATTANOOGA, and thence forwarded by rail to Washington.
In making selection for the interior finishing „f the National Capitol,THE ATTENTION OF THE BUILDING COMMITTEE WaS ATTRACTED TO THESE BLOCKS,and, although they had befcke them numerous speciments from all parts of
the Union, they decided in favor of the East Tennessee marble for theinterior finish of a p* rt of the 8uiloing. soon after an agent was sent bythe Committee to ascertain if the maksle could be obtained in quantity, hi'His report was amply conclusive on this point.
The contract f m this w„rk w*s secured by Hugh Sissons and WilliamDougherty of Philadelphia, Pa. and thereupon they proceeced to open a
quarry on a large scale at a point auout 9 miles southwest of rogersvilleWHERE THE HOLSTON RIVER INTERSECTED THE TwE MARBLE BELT. Th I S QUARRYknown as the "old dougherty quarry." s./etimes called the "nationalQuarry" is located on the north side of the river at the southwestern

HISTORY OF MARBLE iNDUSTW OF EAST TENNESSEE Page 66
extremity of a ridge, at the base of which the marble formation outcrops. The location was well chosen, for the formation here was thick and massiveand the blocks were easily transported to the boats, by \vh i "h they wereconveyed to Chattanooga, and thence by kail to Washington. It is this st
stone from the "Old Dougherty quARRY" that constitutes about half the
ORNAMENTAL MARBLE USED IN THE NATIONAL CaPITOL. "Th E BALUSTRADES, AND
columns of the stairs leading up to the house an'u senate galleries, the walls of the marble room, and other parts of the building, are of
Tennessee maRsle." Segments of columns rejected by the contractor may stillbe seen in the vicinity of the quarry and one that accidentally rolled off
THE BOAT IS SaID TO BE RESTING IN THE BOTTOM OF THE RIVER NEAR THE LOADING P
PLACE.In these early days, the methods of quARRYiNG were of the most
PRIMITIVE CHARACTER. Th E DRILLING WAS BY HAND, THE BLOCK WEDGED OUT ANDroughly dressed in the quarry. no derricks were used, the blocksbeing rolled out of the quarry by man and team labor, loaded on wagons and
hauled by teams to the boat landing. The first superintendent of the Dougherty Quarry was William Cannon.
He was succeeded in i 858 by James Wright, who continued in chargeFOR MANY YEARS, AND WAS CONSIDERED 3Y the quARRYMEN of Tenn as the proneerquARRYMAN. Operations were interrupted by the war between the states, but
WERE RESUMED THEREaFTE AND CONTINUED D jWN UNTIL ABOUT I 89 1 .
The next quarry opened was the "Cave" or "HASSON'S QUARRY", situated abou'
about 4-| miles northeast of the "Dougherty" and a like distance westof Rogersville. This quaRRy was opened by Mr. John HaSSon ab^ut i857,and was the first of the tennessee quarries in which derricks and channelingmachines were used Mr. HaSson having installed here the first channelingmachine brough south of the Potomac river.
The first large contract was for blocks for the Baltimore City Hall, and these like all other marble blocks in those days, had to be hauledTO THE RIVER AND BOATED DOWN TC CHaTTANOjGA. BUT IN THOSE TIMES THEPRICES OBTAINED WEKE qU I IE LARGE, AND A GREAT DEAL OF THE MARBLE FROM THISQUARRY WAS SOLD ABOVE TEN DOLLARS A CUGIC FOOT.
Prominent among the early quaRRymen of Hawkins County was J. C. Stampsof Rogersville, who operated what is known as the "STAMPS STAR QUARRY" loLOCATED ABOUT 2 MILES SOUTHWEST OF THE "D;UGHEiiTY qUARRY. Th I S qUARRY WASOPENED BY A MR. STUART A^OUT 1 874 AND OPERATED BY MR. STAM PS UNTILi887, when it passed under the control of some Chicago parties representedby Dr. Kerder of MojResburg. These operations were continued for four orfive years since which time the quarry has remained idle.
One-half mile northeast of the STaiv'^S STAR Quarry, near the roadLEADING TO RED BRIDGE FERRY, IS THE qUARRY AND MILL OF MR. H B STAiVl PS
WHO, WITH HIS BROTHER, HAS BEEN CONNECTED WITH THE qUARRYING INDUSTRYof Hawkins county for many years . This quARRY Was opened in 1887,AND CONTINUED IN OPERATION IN A MODEKATE WAY UNTIL RE ENTLY, WHEN THEDEMAND FOR THE DARK VARIEGATED MARBLES PRACTICALLY CEASED.
ADJOINING THE STAMPS STAR QUARRY, IS THE EVANS QUARRY, OPERATEDEXTENSIVELY FOR MaNY YEaRS BY THE ,7 H EVANS GARBLE COMPANY, OF BALTIMOREMaryland. With the change in public taste for lighter shades, thiscompany transferred its operations to the kfcioxville district, about 20 yearsago, where it has continued to operate several quarries of popular brandsof gray ano pink marble.

Other na-ies prominfntly associated formerly with the marbleINTERESTS OF H AWK I N S C OUNTY ARE THOSE OF J H PlER E AN.D Ja:ES COOPER OFROGERSVI L. E.
VaRJOUS QUARRIES WERE OPENED ON THE 3ELT NORTHEAST OF THE "OLD DOUGHERTY 11
QUARRY, ABOUT 20 BEING IN OPERATION AT ONE TIME IN THIS DISTRICT, WITH RoROGERSVILLE AS THE LOGICAL CENTER OF THE INDUSTRY. MaNY WERE OF RELATIVELYminor importance, but together they made a notable contribution to theoutput of the district. first, northeast of the "old dougherty"quarry are the "Fudge" a<md "McClure" quarries. Then in order comethe "Pri e". "Kyle" aud Cave quarries. Farther on were a number ofother quarries, whose names are not available.
THE COMPLETION OF THE EaST TENNESSEE, VIRGINIA AND GEORGIA R*lLroad (now the bristol chattanooga branch of the southern railway, ) +tin rogersville was begun before th e c i v i l war and completed soon afterits close. Prior to this, as previously noted, the shipment of themarble was entirely by water to chattanooga and thence by rail, in timesof low water, however, this mode of transportation was often interrupted andand subject to annoying delays and uncertainties, and the coming of theRailroad was welcomed as a hap>-y event.
The marble was k conveyed from the quarries to the rai lroao by wagon
hauled by mule teams, from five to i 2 teams amd sometimes i 5 being requiredfor eah wagon. From the beginning, the contract for hauling the productof the quarries was held by a colored man, Fred Netherland of Rogersvillewhose equipment of mules numbered at one time about i 00
.
The Hawkins county belongs the credit, not only for initiating the
marble quarring industry, 8ut also for the erection of the first marbleMILLS IN THE STA TE . ThE FIRST OF THESE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A SMALL STEAM
MILL ERECTED AT RoGEu'S V I LLE . FlNCANClAL EMBRaRRASSMENT, HOWEVER, SOON
OVERTOOK THE ; PRO PB I ETORS , AND ITS OPERATION WAS DESjLTORY AND SOONceased altogether. th e stamps mill, near galbralth springs, waskrsft erected in 1900, and has been in almost continuous operation downdown to 18 1 91 2 when owing to the cessation in the demand for the
Hawkins county variety of marble the mill closed.
The product of this mill, as of all the Hawkins County quarries, was sb used chiefly for ffrnituke manufactur, and as the demand for
marble topped furniture has now ceased there is little or no demand forthis style of marble. one of the chief obstacles to the development of the
marble industry in this county, however, is Want cf shipping facilitieskost of the quarries are from five tj 8 miles from the railroads, and
THE GREAT EXPENSE OF TEAMING THE MARBLE OVERTHE MOUNTAIN ROaDS TO THE RAILRAILWAY, PREVENTS T.IS DISTRICT FROM COMPETING SUCCESSFULLY WITH OTHERSFARTHER SOUTH, WHERE THE QUARRIES ARE LOCATED WITHIN EASY REACH OF THErailroad, given favorable railroad F*ciLiiTE r
, deposits of pink andgray marble, which undoubtedly exist mere, wcuco have been ee» openedBUT UNDER PRESENT CONDITIONS THESE A«E N -T LIKELY TO BE DEVELOPED.
OPERATIONS IN THE KNOX VI L_E DISTRICTIn i852 Mr. James Sloan opene© a quarry on a ridoe ab^ut 2 mi
MILES NORTH OF KNOXVIU-E, NEAR THE EaST TE..NESSEE AND VIRGINIA (NOW THES.uthern) RailR-ad. Only the dark or variegated marble was taken ut atthat time. of special interest is the statement made by saff0rd(Geology of Tennessee i869, page 23?) f otm:."fe.
THAT IT WAS FROM THIS QUARRY THAT " M.ST CF THE MaRBLE IN THE STATECapitol at Nashville was taken." This quarry also furnished some cf
the marble for the State Ca p itol cf OHIO. Not lchg after this Col.

PASSED INTO THE POSSESSION OF THE TENNESSEE PRODUCERS MaRBLE COMPANY,
by w^gm it is still operated.
/ When in i872 the united States Government undertook the
erection f the knoxvil e custom house and post of fl e, it was descided
in construct t» it of marble from the vicinity. a quarry was cepened
near the forks of the river, a small mill erected, and here allfc the
marble used in the building was quarried and Sawed. Later Mr. George WRoss, who was the paymeste^ of the building, in partnership with Mr.

energy. Agents were appointed in the northern cities, which Was a
NEW THING IN THE TeNN MaRBLE BUSINESS, ANO RESULTED IN MAKING LARGE
DEMANDS FOR THE COMPANY'S PRODUCT. DuR I NG THE l2 OR |5 YEARS THE QUARRY
WAS WORKED, IT PRODUCED A GREAT DEAL OF MARBLE, BOTH GRAY AND LIGHT-PI I

the quarry, close to the riverside.
The Republic Marble Company x was organized in June 1886
and began operating a quarry located near concord, |8 miles southwest
of knoxville. in 1392 a quarry was opened a^cut x" one mile worth
of the village of luttrell a" d a part of the cghi'-a'^y's plant was

a steam mill was erected near the luttrell quarry a few years later
and both quarry and mill have oeen openerated continuously tu the
