President’s Message
Well, we are off and running with another season of hockey. Although our start is not the one we all hoped for, it is way too early to get concerned. Just like the crew running the replay screen found out, it takes a while to work the “bugs” out.
This month we can look forward to the first Hawkey Update Pizza Show. We’ll kick off the season with two returning vets and two rookies. Make sure you put Monday, October 29th on your calendar and meet us at Stark Street Pizza. Page 4 has all the details including the four players who will be in attendance.
Our first Booster meeting of the season will be Saturday, October 20th. The schedule of all our meetings is on page 2. We will continue with the set of collector magnets and our first one will feature second year defenseman #2 Bo Montgomery. Remember these are a limited edition and free to any Booster member who attends the meeting. So if you haven’t renewed your membership for the season, make sure you do so before the 20th.
Another reason to renew your membership is the 3 Stars presentation. It is back again this season. And in order to participate you have to have a current Booster membership card. So make a bee-line to the table and get signed up.
Our first jersey raffle of the season is the game worn WHL All Star jersey from Brenden Morrow. You’ll find all the details on page 4.

The first raffle of the season will feature the WHL All Star game worn jersey of former Winter Hawk, now captain of the Dallas Stars, Brenden Morrow. Proceeds from this raffle go towards the Booster’s contribution to the player’s scholarship fund at the end of the season. Each raffle ticket is only $1.00. So buy as many as you can and help support our efforts.
The Hawkey Update Pizza Show will still be at our long time sponsor Stark Street Pizza. At this time we are not sure whether the show will be broadcast on radio or not, but our new color commentator, Jeff Kafoury, will be at the helm.
The show will still run from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Jeff will be interviewing the coach and the attending players in the same format as last season. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to ask questions.
The price of admission is still $3.00 per person and provides you with a drink ticket and a door prize ticket. You can still purchase raffle tickets at $1.00 each for an opportunity to buy pizza for a player and we will also have our 50/50 drawing.
After the show from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm, the door prize and 50/50 drawings will take place including the players auctioning their action photos and there will be plenty of photo opportunities. So put the following dates on your calendar and don’t miss even one.

They’re Back For Another Year! As an incentive to attend a Booster meeting, we are bringing back the set of six magnetic player cards. These were a big hit last season so we are starting out with Bryan Heim’s first pick, #2 Bo Montgomery. Each Booster meet-ing will feature a new card and every Booster who comes to the meeting will be given one free. So make sure you mark October 20th on your calendar and attend the first meeting.
The “Player of the Month” program will continue this season beginning in October. This will be its fourth season. Each month we will select a player whose hustle, great play and contribution stood out from the rest of the team. This player receives $25 in cash and a certificate. Ballots for the October ‘Player of the Month’ will be available at the Booster table beginning with the game on the 20th through the game on the 28th. At that time we will tally the votes and award the player his prize. Make sure you take the time to vote and support this activity.
A Look At This Year’s New Team Members
By Andy Kemper, "New Voice of the Winter Hawks"
September 27, 2007 – Andy Kemper As of this writing, the Winter Hawks are two games into their 32nd season, losing both games of the opening weekend – 6-2 on home ice to the defending Memorial Cup Champion Vancouver Giants, and 2-0 on the road to the 2nd year Chilliwack Bruins. Since the season is new and there has been some changes to the line-up, I thought I’d pass along some information on the new faces in the Hawks line-up for 2007-08. Starting with….
Head Coach Rich Kromm – Kromm is just the fifth Head Coach in Hawks history – following GM Ken Hodge, Brent Peterson, Harold Snepsts and most recently, Mike Williamson – re-turning to Portland after playing just over two seasons for Portland during 1981-83. Kromm was Team Captain of the 1983 Memorial Cup Championship team in Portland. He played over 300 games at the NHL level before getting into coaching, and was an As-sistant and Head Coach at the minor-pro level before landing the Head Coach job with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL, where he was behind the bench for three years. After Cal-gary, Kromm was a Lead Instructor and Coach for the Okanagan Hockey School in Penticton, BC.
On the ice (hockey age in parentheses)...
#1 – Mark Guggenberger (18) – Goaltender – Mark comes to Portland after playing high school hockey in his hometown of Richfield, MN. Mark has good size (6’3”, 208 lbs) and is described as an athletic goaltender that plays a strong positional style. He posted 1.74 GAA and 3 shutouts in 11 games played for his high school team last season.
#6 – Brett Ponich (16) – Defenseman – Brett is the largest of the first year players, meas-uring 6’6” and 202 lbs as a 16 year old from Beaumont, AB. He played midget hockey last season in Leduc, AB, posting 1-10-11 with 64 PIM in 35 games. Brett got into two games last season with Portland, posting 0 points or PIM’s.
#7 – Tyler Swystun (19) – Center – Tyler was acquired in a summer trade that saw Thomas Frazee going to Medicine Hat. Tyler played 70 games last year for the Tigers, posting 12-24-36 with 45 PIM. Tyler brings speed, skill and experience to the Hawks. He was a first round bantam pick of the Prince George Cougars, but never played a game for PG. He scored his first goal as a Hawk in his first game.
#8 – Aaron McGill (18) – Center – Aaron is a local product, hailing from Salem, OR. He was a non-listed free agent invite to training camp this year and earned a spot with his hard work and tenacity. He played last year for the Portland Jr. Hawks U18 AA team, posting 41-54-95 with 119 PIM’s in 58 games.

A Look At This Year’s New Team Members
By Andy Kemper, "New Voice of the Winter Hawks" -continued-
#14 – Luke Walker (17) – Right Wing – Luke joins Darrell May, Jr., as a second generation Hawk, as Luke’s dad, Gordie, was a teammate of Rich Kromm on the 1982-83 Memorial Cup Championship team. Luke has good offensive talent, posting 51-49-100 in 06-07 with the Okanagan Hockey Academy AAA Midget Team.
#17 – Riley Boychuk (16) – Left Wing – Riley is the Hawks first round bantam pick from 2006. He starts the year injured with a hip flexor injury and has yet to take full prac-tices. He skates well and has a nice shot. Scored 18-18-36 in 29 games with the Fraser Valley Bruins of the BC Major Midget League last season.
#20 – Radim Valchar (18) – Left Wing – Radim is the Hawks first round import pick from 2007, hailing from Karvina in the Czech Republic. He posted 19-23-42 in 41 games for HC Vitkovice in the Czech Junior League. He plays an aggressive style, not afraid to go to the corners or work on the boards, and has good offensive skill.
#24 – Brock Cornish (18) – Defenseman – Brock was acquired during training camp from the Tri City Americans and unfortunately was injured in a pre-season game, causing surgery on his shoulder that will keep him out of the line-up for 4-6 months. Cornish is a puck-moving d-man and will hopefully provide offense once he returns to the line-up.
#26 – Lee Morrow (17) – Defenseman – Lee was a teammate of Brett Ponich in Leduc last season, posting 7-16-23 with 75 PIM in 32 games. He is a smooth skater who makes a good first pass out of his zone. He is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury.
#32 – Todd Panchyson (19) – Defenseman – Acquired from Lethbridge after the Cornish in-jury, Todd is a former first round bantam pick of the Kootenay Ice. He brings offensive skill and speed to the blueline and will be looked on to help run the power play for the Hawks this year.
#34 – Jordan White (19) – Goaltender – Listed as a Free Agent by the Hawks after starting last year with the Prince George Cougars. After getting into 11 games with the Cougars, White joined the Prince George Spruce Kings where he had a GAA of 3.06. Made his first career start with the Hawks on Sept. 22 in Chilliwack, stopping 30 of 32 shots in the 2-0 loss.
So, there you have it, the new faces suiting up for the Hawks in 2007-08. Next month, we will highlight the first month of the 2007-08 season. Until then…
Go Hawks!!
