Hawk Owls’ Home Learning
Term 5 Week 5: Monday 18th May 2020
Hello lovely Hawk Owls!
We hope you are all doing really well and staying healthy and happy! Having spoken to many
of you and your parents on the phone or via email, we can see that you are continuing to work very
hard. We have been so impressed with the work you have completed over the last few weeks. If, like
many, you are starting to lose motivation, try and give yourself one last push; we have a week off for
May half term next week! Just try to do a little bit of learning each day; if you only manage the ‘must’
that’s fine, but keep those brain cells ticking over!
You will be excited to know that we have all put our hoodie orders in now and the company have
started to make them. We are hoping they will be with us by the beginning of July at the latest. Mrs
Taylor and I have ordered one too and we very much hope to be able to wear them with you in
term 6!
The secondary schools have been in contact with us and you will be reassured to know that we
are talking to them via email and ‘Google Meet’ (video meeting) to discuss transition and tell them
all about your learning at Great Milton ready for starting in Year 7. The Heads of Year 7 are working
hard to get everything in place for you so that you can ‘reach for the stars’ in September!
The learning for this week is below, with some extra resources to help you on our class page. As
always, please get in touch if you need help with anything.
We are very proud of all of you.

went on a lovely social- distancing walk this weekend and saw a gaggle of geese and goslings!
We hope you’ve all done something fun too! Let us know on our class blog!
Writing Challenge:
You must: Complete the Weekly Writing Challenge (you could dedicate a session a day to
each step).
LO: To develop initial ideas through reading and research to produce a narrative
- I can use an image to develop a narrative set within Victorian times
- I can develop characters and settings using my previous learning and research
- I can plan the structure of my story using a story mountain planning sheet
- I can edit and improve my draft before my final write.
As this is our final week learning about the Victorians, we would like to see you use the
information you have learnt this term to write your own creative piece of writing set in the
Victorian period.
STEP 1: Develop ideas
Look at the images provided. You are going to pick one of these photographs to base
your story on. Jot down some notes around your chosen image to help you build ideas for
your story e.g. the young chimney sweep:
You might find it helpful to return to some of the websites we have used this term to help
you develop your initial ideas further.
STEP 2: Plan
Use the story mountain template attached to plan the structure of your story. You might
find using bullet points an easy way to jot your ideas down.
STEP 3: Draft
Have a go at drafting your story. This is a great time to play with different sentence
structures, openers, connectives, adverbial phrases, similes and adjectives to extend your
sentences.
STEP 4: Edit and improve
Once you are happy with your draft, read it aloud to yourself and edit using a different
coloured pen like we usually would in class. This will help you up-level your vocabulary,
check spelling using a dictionary and add description.
STEP 5: Present
Write your story in neat using the corrections you made in your draft. Don’t forget to share
your story on our class blog for us all to enjoy
Extension: You could read your story to a family member in your house or over the phone
to celebrate your writing.
