Overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy Bayonet Constitution

Forced Kalakaua to sign new constitution in 1887

Allowed foreigners (Americans) to control legislature.

Kalakaua dies in 1891. Liliuokalani’s 1893 Constitution

Limited foreigners from voting. Gave land rights back to Hawaiians. Plantation owners start the Annexation Club.

Overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarch Annexation Club removed Liliuokalani from

power with threat of force. Liliuokalani surrenders without any conflict. Provisional Government declared.

Hawaiians Fight Back and Win! Hawaiian Nationalist Groups Emerge

Hui Kalaiaina and Hui Aloha Aina Raise money for Queen Liliuokalani to travel to

Washington, D.C. to testify in 1893. Kingdom Petitions

38,000 out of 40,000 signatures against provisional government from people in Hawaii, including foreigners in 1893.

Hawaiian Sovereignty Restored Congressman Blount sent to Hawaii to

investigate in 1893 by order of President Cleveland.

Blount determines that strong injustice has been done to Hawaiian Kingdom.

Cleveland reinstates sovereignty to the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Newlands Resolution signed by McKinley. Hawaii declared U.S. Territory. Langlas, 2009
