JAMES T. NISHIKAWA May 15, 1925 - January 5, 2005 James T. Nishikawa, 79, passed away January 5, 2005 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Hilo, Hawaii, "Jimmy" graduated from Leileihua High School in Wahiawa and then served in the U.S. Army. He honed his talent for business by attending Honolulu Business College and San Francisco's Golden Gate College. Settling in San Francisco in 1957, he began his career in accounting and later also launched his wife's "Key's Beauty Salon". In 1977, Jimmy became the tax accountant for the San Diego headquarters of Japan's Kyocera International. His keen sense of accounting kept him "working" during retirement, in between his passion for golf and Japanese-style woodworking. His craftsmanship can be seen in tansus, shoji lamps, garden gates and fences of friends and family. As a member of the Nisei golf organizations in San Francisco and San Diego, many of his lasting friendships were formed while playing 36 holes. Always a warm smile on his face and a 7 iron in his hand, Jimmy's friends enjoyed his kind-hearted "aloha" spirit and home-baked chocolate cakes. Having lost both parents as a young child, Jimmy was a "father" to nieces and nephews, relatives, friends, colleagues and anyone in need. Jimmy's romantic singing voice, giving nature, and easy laughter will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Key, daughter Teri and son-in-law Elliot Katz, son Lane and daughter-in-law Deborah Gee, granddaughter Gigi and husband John Orta, and two great-grandchildren, Sam and Lily. He will be deeply missed by many other family members and friends in California, Hawaii, and Japan. A celebration of Jimmy's life will be held in San Diego and a Buddhist memorial service in Wahiawa. Please contact family members for details. Donations can be made to Wahiawa Hongwanji, 1067 California Avenue, Wahiawa, HI

The family moved to Oahu and settled into the Honolulu suburbs near Waikiki. At a young age, David was a Waterman and Lifeguard at Waikiki Beach. David was awarded the prestigious John F. Kennedy Life Saving Award during the 60's for saving over 100 lives at Waikiki Beach. He then later became a Police Officer with the Honolulu Police Department working vice and other duties. Uncle David Nuuhiwa, was well known to most locals and traveling surfers in the 50's and 60's as the Doorman for the Waikiki Consolidated Theaters. For a number of years, Hawaii held a well kept secret about David until it was published in the Orient. David Nuuhiwa or "Dr. Kaito", the name given to him by Japan's martial arts governing body, was the World Champion of Hand to Hand Combat. Uncle David was a 12th

Degree Black Belt. He was awarded the legendary Red Belt from Japan and was the last remaining survivor to achieve such an illustrious status. Only 5 in world had ever held this ranking and award. He competed in death matches all over the world during the 50's & 60's. Fought a 7 foot Watusi Warrior in South Africa where he had to fight to the death. Killed a bull with his bare hands in Spain with a single blow. He was known to be one of the last remaining practitioners of the Hawaiian Lua. The ancient Hawaiian art of Lua was also used to heal those who were sick and injured. Several hundreds including professional athletes and celebrities came to Uncle David for physical therapy. When Uncle David moved to California (1960's) he set up Disneyland's first security teams. He knew and worked directly with Walt Disney. He implemented security personnel to wear suits and ties to avoid being intimidating to children and families in the Disneyland amusement park. Presently today all Disneyland parks continue this practice with its security staff's attire. Uncle David performed Hawaiian blessings of the U.S. OPEN and most of the major contests held at Huntington Beach Pier for the past 24 years. He was called on to do blessings and survey properties for good "Mana" (spirit power) for large real estate property developments in California and Hawaii. Uncle David was also active in and loved Polynesian dance and was involved with one of the best Halau's (a dance group) in the world of "Nonosina". Throughout his life and in his last days he was surrounded by friends and families. Alan and Jimmy Pflueger, made it possible for Uncle David to return home for medical care. Jimmy and Alan made his last wish possible. A tribute was made possible for Uncle David at Duke's Waikiki through Ross Anderson in conjunction with the restaurant's 14th anniversary party. Co-sponsored by Bob McKnight, President of Quiksilver and the Hawaiian Surf Club of San Onofre. There is so much more that has not been and needs to be said about Uncle David Nuuhiwa. He was a wonderful human being teaching and touching many lives through the Martial Arts and various surfing and dance communities. His most important message to the world was friendship and family. Scattering of Ashes 8 am, Thurs Jan. 27, 2005, Waikiki Beach in front of Duke's Waikiki. Services WERE held Wed. at Tabernacle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. [Adv Jan. 28, 2005]
