Excerpts from Liane Wong’s Recap of our 2007 Shows: My husband, Albert, is at the 19th World Orchid Conference in Miami Florida. He will be flying back home to Hawaii tomorrow. Therefore, I will read his recap of the 2007 orchid shows in which HKOS participated. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year and thank you for taking time out from your busy schedule to attend our first Year End Brunch Banquet. Waikiki on a Saturday night was getting a bit too much for us seniors. Last year we participated in five orchid shows. The first show of the year as always was the Kunia Orchid Society Show. It was their last show at the Kunia Gym after 52 years. The theme for the show was The End of an Era. This theme was a hard one to conceptualize. When you say “end,” like end of time? How would you visualize time? We came up with the idea of an hour-glass. It was an instrument for measuring time by the trickling of sand through a small opening from one glass bulb to another below it. The problem was glass was too heavy to be used as a prop. We came up with the idea of using two 2-liter soda bottles and instead of sand we had silk Dendrobium blossoms dropping into the bottom bulb below. This was our artistic interpretation of end of an era. No one understood the hour-glass and I guess it was placed high above eye level. As the final hour of the show was coming to an end, a tall haole man saw the hour-glass and said to his friend, “look at that the end of an era with orchids instead of sand.” His friend had no idea what he was saying. We won 3rd place for Best Guest Exhibitor. Patrick O’Day received two awards: Best of Ascocenda and Best Yellow Phalaenopsis. The second show was the Windward Orchid Society’s 27TH Annual Spring Show which was held at S.W. King Intermediate School Gym. The theme was Marketplace of Orchids. In our display we had a cart with big wheels and an umbrella. The cart was filled with a variety of colored orchid plants. Our display won 2nd place. Buster Nagayama won the award for Best Yellow Dendrobium. The third show was the Orchid Society of Manoa’s Annual Orchid Show which was held at Noelani Elementary School cafetorium on Woodlawn Drive. We did not place at all, but Ed Miyasato won Best of Other Genera. The fourth show was Aiea Orchid Club’s 26th Annual Orchid Show held at Aiea Elementary School cafetorium on Moanalua Road. We put up our signature pond and waterfall display. We won 2nd place. Ed Miyasato got the award for Best Semi-Terete Vanda while Patrick O’Day got the award for Best of Vanda. The fifth show was the scaled down 2007 Honolulu Orchid Society 68th Annual Show which was held at Lanakila Elementary School cafetorium. The theme was Orchids in Paradise. We used another of our signature display props, our fake Koolau Mountain range, upon which we stuck a glowing flame simulating an erupting volcano. We won the Lieutenant Governor’s Trophy for the Best Show Theme Display. Awards went to Ed Miyasato for Best Semi-terete Vanda, Clem Roldan for Best Miscellaneous Vanda, and Roy Tokunaga/H&R Nurseries for Best other Genera. Tom Uesugi, not an HKOS member but a member of another club, loaned us his plant because it did not fit in his club's display, and won Best Single-Flowered Paphiopedilium. As we reflect back to the year’s shows we want to thank all of the members who helped with the transporting, setting up and taking down of the numerous floor displays. For the members who brought their blooming orchid plants and greens, again, thank you very much.
