PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – Paul Scott
Aloha ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter Members: I know that some of our members were unable to attend the
ASHRAE Christmas Party that was held on 12/15/2011. If you did
not attend… then you missed a really great time!! We had a special
dinner menu for the party that was really great. Abe Kia and his
friends provided some really great music for the season and we had
really great door prizes thanks to our very generous sponsors!! We also had a visit from Mr & Mrs.
Franklin Lum which made the Past Presidents part of the meeting really special. They came all the
way from Texas and timed their visit to coincide with our party!! If you missed the party. Don’t
worry, we have some more exciting meetings coming up!!
The January meeting will be a guest panel, which the membership has indicated that they find
most interesting. The speakers will be addressing Energy Saving Performance Contracts. This
should be an informative and interesting presentation. Ernest Lau is the speaker from DAGS and I
have known Ernie since he was with the Kauai BWS for a number of years. I am looking forward to
a good turnout for this meeting.
Just a reminder that the ASHRAE Annual Seminar/Trade Show will be in February this year. It will
be on High Performance Building Design and is scheduled for 2/24/2012. The keynote speaker will
be ASHRAE Society Past President Mr. Kent Peterson, P.E. Mr. Peterson was very involved in the
formation of the ASHRAE High Performance Building Standards and should provide us excellent
insight into current issues and what the future holds for us. In closing I just wanted to give an additional thank you to our sponsors (see following list) for the
Christmas Party without whom we would not have had such a great time:
Mahalo. Scotty.

January Technical Session “Renewable Energy Solutions”:
Mr. Nick Dizon
This month’s Do’s and Don’t seminar will feature Mr. Nick Dizon, owner and President
of NIDON Energy Solutions. Mr. Dizon will share various renewable energy solutions
with an emphasis on energy storage. With renewable energy systems becoming very
common in Hawaii, having a smooth and continuous renewable energy source is still
problematic since renewable sources are intermittent in nature (ie. Wind, solar, etc). Mr.
Dizon will discuss large scale battery solutions and other viable alternatives that can be
considered for use with renewable sources.
Mr. Dizon is a Consultant and Project Manager who performs marketing/sales including
customer staff buy in, consulting and project management, including analysis, problem
solving, design, disaster recovery, and implementation for data center facilities, generator
back up power, power quality, energy efficiency, renewable energy, dynamic and static
UPS, networks, servers, mainframe installation, and data center layouts. Mr. Dizon
communicates, coordinates, and cooperates with a wide variety or personnel ranging from
senior executives to office end users. Recent work includes developing hybrid renewable
energy and backup power using ZBB Energy Corporation Zinc Bromide Flow Batteries for
commercial buildings and condominiums, Sarbanes Oxley compliance review for a local
bank and airline covering hardware, facilities, infrastructure, disaster recovery and their
inter-departmental ramifications. Introduced energy efficient induction lighting solutions
to Queens Medical Center, AES Hawaii, Tripler Arny Medical Center, and the Airport
Trade Center. Provide technical support to Pacific Scanning LLC in ground penetrating
radar and subsurface toning.

January 12th Main Program: What is Energy Performance
Contracting? This month’s main program will feature the topic of Energy Performance
Contracting. With today’s tough economy, many building owners are “cash-
strapped” and cannot afford to invest in energy conservation measures regardless
of economical feasibility. However, Energy Performance Contracting is a proven
contract vehicle that enables building owners to accomplish energy retrofits using
existing operational costs for utilities and maintenance that are redirected into
desperately needed Energy Equipment Capital Projects.
In Hawaii, there have been over $100 million in Energy Saving Performance
Contracts (ESPC) implemented in public sector projects over the past decade
resulting in speding public money on much needed energy projects reducing
Hawaii’s energy consumption and dependence on foreign fossil fuels.
This month’s program will look at Energy Performance Contracting in detail from
the point of view of the building owner, Energy Performance Contractor,
Financier, and Engineering Design Consultant. The panel will feature the
following speakers:
Building Owner Perspective:
Mr. Ernest Lau – Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS)
Energy Agent and State of Hawaii Perspective:
Michael Chang - Hawaii Energy (SAIC)
Energy Performance Contractors Perspective:
Dave Moakley - Ameresco
Jay Johnson - Noresco
Scott Rees - Johnson Controls
Moderator and Engineering Consultant:
Joel Yuen – Insynergy Engineering Inc.

ASHRAE HAPPENINGS FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER
December X-MAS Party
For those of you who missed it, the ASHRAE X-MAS party was a hit event and all
who attended had a great time! It was fun to share in fellowship with our colleagues,
co-workers, and their families. It was also nice to see some of our Past Presidents
there, especially Mr. Frank Lum who flew in from Texas just to attend our event. As
you can tell from the photos, Frank still looks great and has not aged one bit!
We would like to thank all of the generous donors (see list above) who contributed to
door prizes this year and we hope many of you who attended were able to go home
with a nice door prize. A special “thank you” goes out to Mark Yamamoto who made
a great Santa Claus. With his nice dark tan, Mark was the perfect Hawaiian Santa
Clause!

ASHRAE Student Activities Report: On December 1, 2011 ASHRAE Student members from Derek Oshiro’s Honolulu Community College
Refrigeration Class toured the Alakai Mechanical production shops. The tour was lead by Willie Kaina,
and Kaipo Akaka. We saw the sheetmetal fabrication area, which consisted of an automated rectangular
duct fabrication, round duct fabrication. We also saw the welding area, duct lining area, and the various
AC equipment that was awaiting installation in their warehouse. Thanks to Ralph Inouye of Alakai
Mechanical for helping to arrange the tour.

From the Editor
Happy New Year! I hope your holidays were restful and you are
all ready to start another productive and hopefully, a fruitful and
successful New year.
This year brings a lot of uncertainty as our economy still
flounders. The negative news still keeps coming with Hawaii
Medical Center Closing, the dollar weakening, and the Federal
Govt. needing to slash budgets. It is still unclear how all of this
will affect us, but we can be sure that it will in some way. All we
can do is bear down and keep doing the best at what we do to ride
this out. Diversification is good and finding opportunities outside
of our normal ways of doing business and comfort zones will help
us get through these tough economic times.
This is why I encourage you to come to this month’s meeting. Our
do’s and don’t will feature renewable energy possibilities and our
main program will be on Energy Performance Contracting. These
two topics will still remain hot as energy savings still makes sense
as we all find ways to save money and make returns on our
investments.
.
I look forward to seeing you there!
Have a Good January and Kung Hee Fat Choy!
