HAWAI‘I-MICHIGAN TIES4Michigan Director of Player Personnel Tony Tuioti is a former UH player and assistant coach. Tuioti was an all-WAC defensive tackle and member of the 1999 conference championship squad that produced the greatest turnaround in NCAA history under head coach June Jones. Tuioti and Nick Rolovich served on the same staff under head coach Greg McMackin from 2008-11. Tuioti also served as an assistant for two seasons under former UH head coach Norm Chow.4Junior offensive lineman Chris Posa is a native of Commerce, a suburb of Detroit. Posa was an all-league lineman and member of the 2011 state championship team for Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep. He transferred to Hawai‘i this past summer after three years as a walk-on at Alabama where he was a member of the 2015 national champion-ship squad. 4Hawai‘i athletics director David Matlin is a 1987 graduate of the University of Michigan. His father was a former member of the Detroit Tigers front office. 4Hawai‘i and Michigan co-hosted a satellite camp earlier this summer on June 26 in Honolulu. It was held at Saint Louis School, the alma mater of 2014 Heisman Trophy winner and current Tennessee Titan quarter-back Marcus Mariota. 4Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was the starting quarterback dur-ing the first-ever meeting between UH and Michigan in the 1986 regular-season finale at Aloha Stadium. Harbaugh finished 9-of-15 for 125 and no touchdowns in the Wolverines 27-10 win. Harbaugh was an All-American and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting that season.

THE LAST TIME MEETINGMichigan 48 Hawai‘i 17 Nov. 28, 1998 / Aloha StadiumMIchigan tailback Anthony Williams rushed for 183 yards and four touch-downs as the Wolverines rolled over the ‘Bows in the regular-season finale. After UH scored a field goal on the opening drive, the Wolverines scored 41 unanswered points. It was the final game for UH head coach Fred vonAppen who was released after three seasons at the helm. Less than a month later, June Jones was hired to replace vonAppen.

THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE

HAWAI‘I-CAL POST GAME NOTESSTREAKS4UH’s first-ever game on foreign soil and just its fourth neutral site game ever. With the loss, Hawai‘i dropped to 2-2 all-time in neutral site games.4Nick Rolovich is the fifth straight UH head coach to drop his debut, joining Norm Chow (2012, USC), Greg McMackin (2008, at Florida), June Jones (1999) and Fred vonAppen (1996, Boston College). Bob Wagner was the last UH head coach to win his first game (1987, Cal State Fullerton).4UH has dropped 25 of its last 26 games away from Aloha Stadium.4Paul Harris ended the 2015 season with four straight 100-yard rushing games. That streak came to an end after he finished with 36 yards on seven carries. TEAM4UH’s 31 points was its highest output in its last 14 meetings versus FBS squad (37-35 win over UNLV on Nov. 22, 2014).4The Rainbow Warriors 482 yards of total offense were also the most since that UNLV game.4Three different running backs scored a touchdown for UH: Diocemy Saint Juste, Steven Lakalaka and Paul Harris.4The 51 points surrendered by UH were the most in an opener since a 56-10 loss at Florida in 2008.4Cal’s 630 yards of total offense was the highest output by a UH opponent since Wyoming racked up a school-record 793 yards in 2013.4UH debuted its new all-white Under Armour road uniforms, including a white helmet that was first used in UH’s 2015 home season-finale versus UL Monroe.4UH had six first-time starters: 2 on offense (RB Diocemy Saint Juste, WR John Ursua) and 4 on defense (DL Zeno Choi, LB Malachi Mageo, CB Jamal Mayo, S Damien Packer).INDIVIDUAL4In his first career start, Diocemy Saint Juste, fin-ished with 118 yards on 14 carries for his second career 100-yard game. His 53-yard touchdown in the first quarter was the longest run of his career.4Ikaika Woolsey made his second career opening-day start and finished 17-of-34 for 234 yards (1 TD, 1 INT) while also breaking loose for a 30-yd run. 4Redshirt freshman John Ursua’s first career catch went for a 32-yard gain. Ursua finished with a team-high five catches (70 yards).4Marcus Kemp scored the first UH touchdown of the season with a 39-yard connection from Ikaika Woolsey midway through the first quarter. It was the sixth career touchdown for the senior receiver. 4Jahlani Tavai and Trayvon Henderson led UH with 12 tackles as both players set new career highs in the category.4Samiuela Akoteo recorded his first career sack with a takedown of Davis Webb in the first quarter.

4After seven previous starts along the offensive line, senior Leo Koloamatangi made his first career start at center.4Steven Lakalaka scored his first touchdown since the 2014 season when he scored on a 4-yard plunge in the third quarter. Lakalaka fin-ished with 11 carries for 61 yards.4As he did last year, Rigo Sanchez again handled all kicking duties (kickoff, field goal, PAT, punt) for UH. Sanchez attempted an onside kick to start the game, which was recovered by Cal. He also con-verted on a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter.

GETTING THE SHOW STARTEDHawai‘i and Cal Bears officially opened the 2016 college football season when they met on Saturday, August 27. It was the earliest-ever opener for UH which received a waiver to start the season in Sydney. August start dates may become the norm after UH played a grueling slate of 13 straight games without a bye in 2015. The newly expanded Hawaii Exemption now allows UH to play their first game the week before Labor Day weekend.

READY TO ROLOThe 2016 season opener marked the head coach-ing debut of Nick Rolovich. Its’ a return to the islands for Rolovich, who was a star quarterback for the Rainbow Warriors under the tutelage of offensive guru June Jones. The Novato, Calif., native, broke 19 school records at UH, including an epic 8-TD performance in a 2001 upset over No. 9 BYU. Rolovich also served as a UH assistant coach under Greg McMackin (2008-11), including two seasons as offensive coordinator. In his first year as OC, UH topped the NCAA in passing yards and finished 6th in total offense. At 37-years-old, Rolovich is the fifth-youngest head coach in the FBS.

FREQUENT FLYERSThrough the course of the 13-game slate, the Rainbow Warriors will make seven road trips and play in four different time zones, beginning with its trek to Sydney, Australia. UH will rack up 46,568 miles by air during the season, enough to circle the globe twice. The “Road Warriors” will also log 766 miles by bus.

Destination Opponent RT Air MilesSydney Cal 10,166Detroit Michigan 8,946Phoenix Arizona 5,834San Jose San Jose St. 4,834Denver Air Force 6,728San Diego San Diego St. 5,226San Jose Fresno St. 4,834Total Miles 46,568

Of course this type of travel is nothing new for the Rainbow Warriors who posted 40,125 air miles last year and was the only FBS team to play in five different time zones.

HAWAI‘I VS. THE BIG TENHawai‘i holds an 9-23 record against currentmembers of the Big Ten conference. The Rainbow Warriors played a pair of road games last year at Ohio State (L, 38-0) and Wisconsin (L, 28-0) and were shutout in both games. UH is 3-6 in its last nine meetings versus the Big Ten with wins at home over Northwestern (2004), Michigan State (2004), and Purdue (2006). UH’s lone road win against a Big Ten squad came at Nebraska by a count of 6-0 in 1955. Nebraska was then a mem-ber of the Big 7 Conference (soon to be Big 8).

HAWAI‘I VS. THE POWER 5Since 2003, UH has 10 wins versus teams from the Power 5 conferences—ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC—in 34 opportunities. Below is a list of UH’s wins during that span.Three of the wins have come against the Big Ten.

HAWAI‘I VS. RANKED TEAMSHawai‘i is 10-40 all-time versus nationally ranked teams, including a 1-15 mark on the road. UH has dropped seven straight versus ranked foes and 11 of its last 12 dating back to 2008. UH is 3-15 all-time versus top 10 squads.

ATTENDANCE WATCHLast year the Rainbow Warriors faced top-ranked Ohio State before 107,145 fans at The Horseshoe, the biggest crowd UH has played before. That number could well be eclipsed Saturday when UH visits the Big House to play in front of what’s anticipated to be just the second crowd to eclipse 100,000 in a UH game.

OFFENSIVE NOTES HAWAI‘I VS. MICHIGAN (SEP. 3, 2016)Mountain, Central and Eastern time zones. More than half of the team hails from Hawaii (42) and California (33). The Rainbow Warriors also boast six players from American Samoa, three from Australia and one from Japan.

BOWL-BOUND COMPETITIONNIne of UH’s 13 opponents in 2016 made appear-ances last year in postseason play. All nine partici-pated in FBS bowl games — Cal (Armed Forces), Michigan (Citrus), Arizona (New Mexico), Nevada, (Arizona), San Jose State (Cure), Air Force (Armed Forces), New Mexico (New Mexico), San Diego State (Hawai‘i) and Boise State (Poinsettia). UH is one of only 20 programs in the FBS to face at least nine bowl teams from the previous year.

BREAKING THE STRINGIn 2015, UH posted its fifth consecutive non-winning season and sixth in the last seven sea-sons, a streak the Warriors hope to break in 2016. The last time UH posted five straight non-winning seasons was from 1994-98. Hawai‘i’s last winning season occurred in 2010 (10-4). UH ON NATIONAL TELEVISIONUH has made 85 all-time appearances on national television and owns a 19-64-2 record. UH has lost 25 of its last 26 games on national television with its only win during that stretch against Colorado on CBS Sports Network to open the 2015 season.

VIRAL WARRIORSBefore playing a single down of football in 2016, UH was featured on the SportsCenter Top Plays list four times since this spring. The Rainbow Warriors did it through a variety of viral videos including the “April Fools Massacre,” “Big Man Punt Return,”

“Caddyshack Pool Party” and the “UH Penalty Kick Challenge” The videos can be viewed on Twitter @HawaiiFootball, HawaiiAthletics.com and Instagram @Rolovich.

LIVE ALOHA, PLAY WARRIORSince his hiring late last year, head coach Nick Rolovich has spread a culture of “Live Aloha, Play Warrior.” Community outreach and team building have been integral to the program. UH trained with the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry ‘Tropic Lightning’ Division, helped island residents load up grocer-ies and supplies ahead of Tropical Storm Darby, welcomed young fans to the UH Lower Campus to play Pokémon GO and hosted a Ladies Clinic that benefited the Domestic Violence Action Center.

2016 Hawai‘i Football Weekly Release 5 HawaiiRainbowWarriorsFootball @HawaiiFootball HawaiiAthletics.com

GENERAL NOTES HAWAI‘I VS. MICHIGAN (SEP. 3, 2016)A DEEP STABLE OF BACKSThe Rainbow Warrior entered 2016 with a trio of proven commodities in the backfield. It showed in the season-opener vs. Cal as Diocemy Saint Juste, Steven Lakalaka, and Paul Harris each found the back of the end zone while combining for 215 of the team’s 248 yards on the ground. Coming back from a redshirt season, the explosive Saint Juste got his first starting nod and responded with 118 yards, including a 53-yard TD run. Lakalaka, who led UH in rushing in 2014 (646 yds, 4.1 ypc) used his north-south running ability to finish with 61 yards, while helping power an 84-yard drive in the third quarter. Harris, who last season became just the second UH back in the last 23 years to rush for 1,000 yards, was limited to just seven carries (36 yards), but still scored on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.

O-LINE POWERS THE WAY The offensive line should be source of strength in more ways than one this year. The unit is the most experienced on the team with 73 career com-bined starts among the returnees entering 2016. Headlining the returnees is all-Mountain West honorable mention Dejon Allen (24 career starts) who moves from guard to starting left tackle in place of four-time all-conference performer Ben Clarke. The unit got off to a great start in 2016, helping UH post 482 yards of total offense versus Cal, while not allowing a single sack.

IN GOOD HANDSFour of the teams five top pass catchers from last year return, including senior Marcus Kemp, who led the team with 36 catches for 563 yards. In all, UH returns the bulk of its 2015 production in catches (80%), receiving yards (86%) and touch-downs (83%) among its group of eight veteran wide receivers and tight ends. Kemp had a team-high 73 yards and a touchdown in the opener vs. Cal. In his first action as a Rainbow Warrior, red-shirt freshman John Ursua hauled in a team-high five catches.

OFFENSIVE FUN FACTS4Ikaika Woolsey’s grandfather, William “Bill” Tripp Woolsey, was a member of the 1952 Olympic 800-meter relay swim team that won the gold medal and set a new Olympic record4Tui Eli was born in Canada and graduated from high school at Kealakehe on the Big Island of Hawaii, but was raised in Samoa where his father Vaeluaga was a tribal chief. 4John Ursua is fluent in French after serving a two-year mission in Paris. He is one of four offen-sive players who’ve completed Mormon missions which also includes Dylan Collie (Richmond, Va.), Beau Reilly (São Paulo, Brazil) and Aaron Zwahlen (Baltimore, Md.)

NEW-LOOK DUH makes the move from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense this year under new defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa. Of course “new” is a relative term for Lempa who is in his second stint as defensive coordinator for the Rainbow Warriors. His first run from 2000-02 was hugely successful with an aggressive style that created havoc for opponents. The 2001 squad won nine games and led the nation with 21 fumble recoveries (in addition to 14 interceptions). The 2002 team, which won 10 games, posted 25 turnovers and set a school record for defensive scoring (32), including four pick-sixes.The defense didn’t get off to the start it wanted versus Cal, failing to force a turnover and giving up 630 yards of total offense.

FITTING RIGHT INAfter starting 11 games as an outside linbacker as a redshrit fresman, Jahlani Tavai (56 tackles, 3 sacks in 2015) is now UH’s man in the middle. Tavai was the team’s most aggressive defender against Cal and finished with a career-high 12 takckles in the loss. Meanwhile Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea moved from linebacker to defensive

DEFENSIVE/SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES HAWAI‘I VS. MICHIGAN (SEP. 3, 2016)end in Kevin Lempa’s new 4-3 scheme and had a solid outing versus Cal, recording five tackles, the most by UH lineman. Among the tackles was a 14-yard sack of Cal’s Davis Webb.

GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACKA pair of players who redshirted in 2015 made an immediate impact in their return to the field. Diocemy Saint Juste made his first career start at running back versus Cal, and in his first action since the 2014 season, posted 118 yards on 14 carries. It included an electrifying 53-yard touch-down in the first quarter that knotted the game at 14. UH also saw the return of ball-hawk Trayvon Henderson (5 career int), who co-led UH with 12 tackles from his safety position. Henderson suffered a season-ending injury just two games into 2015.

DEFENSIVE FUN FACTS4Jahlani Tavai was an All-American honors rugby player in high school and earned a spot on the U18 U.S. National Team.4Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea and his wife Brianna were among the honorees for the Casey Excellence for Children Awards. Kema-Kaleiwahea grew up on O’ahu in an adoptive family of six chil-dren, including his brother, a female cousin and three other boys. To remove the children from an abusive environment, the couple created a home for the children in Arizona and made sacrifices to become their caregivers so they would not be sep-arated in the child welfare system -- this despite the time commitment assumed by Makani as a full-time student playing football at the University of Arizona. Permenant homes were found for three of the children, while Makani and Brianna have since officially adopted two of the boys, Luke and Kaimana Kaleiwahea, since returning to Hawaii.

MULT-FACETED SANCHEZ Multi-talented all-MW honorable mention kicker Rigoberto Sanchez proved to be one of the most steady players for UH in 2015. Coming in pro-jected only as a field goal kicker, Sanchez earned the punting and placekicking jobs in the fall and eventually became one of only five kickers in the FBS who handled all of the kicking duties. Sanchez ranked third in the MW and 13th nationally with a 45.1 punting average including conference highs of 25 punts over 50 yards and 28 punts downed inside the 20. He was also 8-of-11 in field-goal attempts with a long of 50 yards against Nevada. He also took over kickoff duties midway through the season and posted 14 touchbacks in 22 attempts. In the opener versus Cal, he again han-dled all four duties. He converted his all four of his extra points, converted his only field goal attempt (42 yards), pinned two of his four punts inside the 20, and recorded one touchback in five kickoffs.

MR. RELIABLESenior Brodie Nakama has been the team’s start-ing short snapper since his freshman season with 39 career starts. An often overlooked player, Nakama hasn’t recorded a bad snap in each of the last three seasons. During fall camp, the for-mer walk-on was rewarded for his hard work and reliability by being presented with a full scholar-ship at the “Caddy Shack Pool Party,” which made No. 6 on SportsCenter’s Top Plays.

SPECIAL TEAMS FUN FACTS4Junior kick returner Keelan Ewaliko is a former high school rodeo champion, who rode his first bull at the age of 11 4It’s all in the family for starting long snapper Noah Borden whose older brother Kawika was a three-year member of UH football team (2011-13) and whose younger brother Kamuela was member of the 2015 UH signing class. HAWAI‘I COACHING STAFF HAWAI‘I VS. MICHIGAN (SEP. 3, 2016)NICK ROLOVICHHead Coach1st SeasonOverall Record: 0-1MW Record: 0-0 @NickRolovich

Nick Rolovich is the 23rd head coach for the Rainbow Warrior program.

At 37, he is the fifth-youngest head coach in NCAA Division I FBS and the youngest to lead the Rainbow Warriors since Dick Tomey in 1977. Regarded as one of the top offensive minds in the country, Rolovich has proven an accom-plished play-caller in operating the Run and Shoot, as well as the Pistol offense. The former UH offen-sive coordinator and record-setting quarterback returns to Mānoa from Nevada, where he aided the Wolf Pack to bowl eligibility in three of the past four seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Under Rolovich’s guidance at Nevada, quar-terback Cody Fajardo made NCAA history in 2014, reaching 9,000 yards passing and 3,000 yards rushing in a career—only the sec-ond player in NCAA history, follow-ing fellow Wolf Pack signal caller Colin Kaepernick, to reach that mark. In addition, he tutored Bryant Moniz to 10,169 career passing yards during his tenure at Hawai’i. Since joining the Nevada staff in 2012, Rolovich’s Wolf Pack offense has ranked as high as eighth nationally (2012) in total offense, generating 2,786 yards passing with Fajardo at quarter-back, while boasting a seventh-ranked rushing attack paced by Stefphon Jefferson’s 1,883 yards. During his time in Reno, the Wolf Pack made three bowls: the 2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl, the 2014 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and the 2015 NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl. Rolovich’s first coaching stint at UH was wildly productive from 2008-11, directing one of the top passing offenses in the nation. He was the quarterbacks coach all four seasons and spent the final two years as the Warriors’ offensive coordinator. For the latter three years of his time with the Warriors, he had play-calling duties, while UH threw

for 13,915 yards—an average of 347.9 yards per game—and 96 touchdowns. That includes the 2010 season in which Hawai’i led the nation in passing offense (394.3 ypg) and finished sixth in total offense (500.6 ypg). That year, Rolovich men-tored former walk-on quarterback Moniz to the top of the NCAA charts in passing yards, total offense, and touchdowns, and to an eighth-place ranking in passing efficiency. Moniz’s favorite targets were receivers Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares, both of whom spent time in the NFL. Salas finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in receiving yards (4,345), while Pilares is eighth in all-purpose yards (3,379). Rolovich was a two-year letterwinner at quarterback for Hawai’i from 2000-01, starting the bulk of the 2001 season and leading the team to an 8-1 record as a starter. He passed for 4,176 career yards and 40 touchdowns and still holds six school passing records. As a senior that season, he ranked 10th nationally in passing efficiency with a 150.5 rating and broke 19 school passing and eight total offense records.

HOMECOMINGNick Rolovich is one 18 head coaches in the FBS who’ve returned to lead their alma mater. Joined by Brian Smith (offensive coordinator/RB), Craig Stuzmann (QB) and Abe Elimimian (secondary), UH boasts four former players on its full-time coaching staff Only three other schools — BYU (9), Air Force (7), and Boise State (5) — have more alumni on their staff. What’s more, all four were teammates on the 2001 squad that finished the season 9-3. Rolovich (QB), Smith (C), and Stutzmann (WR) were senior starters on offense, while Elimimian was a redshirt freshman who started six games at cornerback.

STARTING YOUNGSean Duggan is getting a head start on his coaching brethren. At 23 years, 4 months, the UH linebackers is the youngest assistant coach in the FBS, nearly two years younger than the next youngest on the list, LB coach Pat Bastian of Georgia Southern. In fact Duggan is younger than six members of the 2016 UH squad. Duggan finished his playing career in 2014 at Boston College before serving as a defensive graduate assistant. Along with BC secondary coach and current UH defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa, Duggan helped the 2015 BC squad that led the nation in total defense.

MORE NOTES4Special teams coordinator Mayur Chaudhari is the son-in-law of Dick Tomey, former head coach at Hawai‘i, Arizona, and San Jose State. Chaudhari served as a graduate assistant at San Jose State under Tomey, coaching special teams, the secondary and linebackers.

4Offensive line coach Chris Naeole was picked 10th overall by the New Orleans Saints in the 1997 NFL Draft, at the time the highest drafted player from the state of Hawai‘i (Ka‘a‘awa; Kahuku HS). Naeole, who also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, enjoyed a 12-year NFL career.

4While at Montana, Legi Suiaunoa developed a pair of NFL players. Tyrone Holmes, who led the FCS in sacks in 2015 now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars.Zach Wagenmann, who holds the school records for sacks and tackles for loss was a member of the 2015 Arizona Cardinals.

4After much success on the FCS and Division II lev-els, 13-year coaching veteran Kefense Hynson takes on his first FBS coaching job. Hyson has served as an offensive coordinator at three different schools, including Montana, where he coached alongside cur-rent UH defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa.

SYDNEY, Australia – In a historic matchup Down Under, Hawai`i fell to California, 51-31, in the open-ing game of the 2016 college football season at ANZ Stadium. Cal racked up 630 yards of total offense to spoil the debut of UH head coach Nick Rolovich. The Bears were led by the exploits of senior transfer Davis Webb, who finished with 441 yards pass-ing and four touchdowns. His target of choice was Chad Hansen who posted 14 catches for 160 yards and a pair of scores. UH hung tough through more than a quarter and half before the game turned on miscues in the final four minutes of the opening half. That’s when the Bears scored 17 straight points to take a commanding 34-14 lead at the break. UH would get no closer than 17 points in the second half. The Rainbow Warriors did produce a strong ground performance with 248 yards rushing, including 118 yards and a touchdown from junior Diocemy Saint Juste. He was one of three UH run-ning backs to score, with Steven Lakalaka and Paul Harris also finding the end zone. Senior quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, starting for the second time in a UH season-opener, went 17-of-34 for 234 yards with one touchdown and one interception. UH came aggressively out of the gates, attempting an onside kick on the game’s opening play. Cal recovered and capitalized right away on a Khalf Muhammad 34-yard scoring run a little more than a minute in. However, UH countered with a Marcus Kemp 39-yard catch-and-run down the sideline for UH’s first touchdown of the season. After Cal went up 14-7 on a Hansen 19-yard catch from Webb, UH again came right back with an electrifying run 53-yard touchdown run by Saint Juste. Cal led just 17-14 late in the second quarter but a pair of special team miscues put UH in a quick hole. The Bears were able get a field goal after a UH leaping penalty on a Cal punt allowed the Bears to extend a drive. UH then fumbled the ensuing kickoff. Cal struck on the next play with a 34-yard touchdown from Hansen. The Bears concluded the pivotal stretch with an 85-yard drive in the final 1:35 of the half, capped by a Webb 4-yard touchdown run.
