HRFC / THE NEW CROFT

By Club Chairman, Alastair Shulver

Well the first thing I would like to say within my update is that I hope everyone is safe and well during these

unprecedented times as the current lock down situation is something we have all never experienced before and right now the number 1 priority is the health and well-being of all our members including our players, coaches,

supporters, committee members and our volunteers.

Throughout any situation I always think it’s best to identify as many positives as I can and I’ve been truly

impressed by the fantastic work that’s gone on between the football club and the Haverhill Community

Sports Association who have both worked together to take the appropriate measures to ensure the football club and facility are both sustainable and will still be

here when things eventually start to get back to normal.

Ever since we made the move from the old ground to our current home, I think it’s been one of the most challenging topics to explain to people how the HCSA

and Rovers partnership really works but I can assure you all that during these challenging times I’m thankful

of this partnership as it provides Rovers with the security and expertise to ensure we can continue to

provide football for our 50 teams moving into the future.

I would also like to thank Marc and the first team who have offered their help and support to those vulnerable

within the community offering help with shopping etc. For me this is great as it shows we are a community club from top down and the players and coaches really

appreciate those who come and support them whilst representing Haverhill.

I’ve also been impressed with many of the youth teams who have arranged live virtual training sessions being delivered by our coaches and senior players who are

all playing a part in trying to keep our young players active whilst also using the opportunity for players to

interact with their teammates and coaches showing the benefit of modern technology.

Our football club works in partnership with all our sponsors and I cannot thank-you all enough for your continued

support and I’m absolutely delighted to announce this week the renewal of the IFF shirt sponsor for the first team who have sponsored the first team for around 15 years which is fantastic support from one of the towns

leading businesses.

Lastly, I would to acknowledge that many of our members have occupations where you are regarded as key workers and have serviced and kept the country going over the last couple of months doing jobs to look after

the health and well-being of others. On behalf of myself and all the committee we cannot thank you enough and would like to take this opportunity to applaud you as we are proud of each and every one of you.

Take care everyone and I hope to see you all fit and healthy at the football club soon. Ali

Season 2019/20 at Haverhill Rovers FC where after a month of first team action the new youth season kicked off for what was to be an exciting season ahead we continued to see good participation in numbers for both boys and girls of all ages as well as seeing the quality of players being produced improving every year which is

commendable to the coach development programme where we are so lucky to have the support of our football development team with Pete and Kayleigh supporting the club.

The club experienced a busy summer where the hard work behind the scenes continues to impress me every year as our admin team including Barbara Jones and Sarah Camfield are pure premier league as we are so lucky to have these hard working professionals driving the club behind the scenes backed up by a committee who have

been behind a very productive summer that’s seen hard work and effort going into fundraising events such as the Rovers Return day that was a special occasion to celebrate the history of our club before we saw a successful

golf day where the day was enjoyed by all and again I must add a special thanks to all the volunteers who made this a success including Barbara, Terry McGerty and Mick Tokley.

The next HRFC Golf Day fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, 11 September 2020.

Page 3: HAVERHILL ROVERS F C NEWSLETTER - Amazon S3...• explore league apps • sponsorship thank yous • the seniors – first team news, league table, results 2019/20 • cambs. women’s

Sponsorship continues to increase around the club which is fantastic as this enables the club to function and

grow so I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors including our long term and new sponsors and also welcome on board Culina who have really got behind the facility and club with a sponsorship deal that sees them sponsoring the main Hub of The New Croft as they are a business who really want to get behind the

community and by sponsoring the towns largest community club I think it’s safe to say they have made a large contribution towards achieving that goal.

On the pitch the first team fielded without doubt the youngest team in the league and we had witnessed some impressive performances and results mixed in with a couple of heavy defeats that were down to the physical elements of the game rather than football but we have to accept this will happen as we want to provide these

exciting young players with an opportunity to learn and I’m very excited by the potential of these players and what’s coming through the youth system as I’m equally impressed by the standard of our EJA setup that’s

beginning to develop a real reputation of good quality being produced so we need to ensure the correct stepping stones are in place to allow this talent to flourish through to the first team.

I would like to congratulate Joe White and Kayleigh Steed on producing a fantastic quality ladies team as we are

now also starting to see some fantastic youth girls coming through the system and like the male side of the club,

I think the future is looking bright. Ali

SECRETARY NOTES

By Club Secretary, Barbara Jones

First and foremost, I hope you and your families are keeping well and safe during this difficult time during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lockdown 24/7 and on furlough, I must admit I am missing my work buddies at the

facility who are a great friendly bunch of characters and who I value for their helpful support.

Haverhill Rovers F C can boast for the 9th consecutive year it has been awarded and named as a FA Charter

Standard Community Club, which is an achievement and kitemark of excellent good practice.

The Club is furthermore very proud of its achievements to date and the hard work of a lot of people connected to it and are committed to the club,

of which many are volunteers which has also led to on field success for many teams. I would therefore like to say a huge thank you to the many

Managers, Coaches and volunteers at the club for their support and commitment which helps to drive the success of the club.

Haverhill Rovers F C in the main relies on income from fundraising events and the support of local businesses to cover its many expenses connected with the running of a successful club to appeal to the local community.

Therefore, in anticipation of the new season 2020-21 beginning, Haverhill Rovers F C would be delighted to retain and maintain a good long-lasting relationship with all its current sponsors, so I take this opportunity to personally thank sponsors on behalf of the club for their tremendous support which is extremely valued by the club, coaches,

teams, players alike.

HAVERHILL ROVERS DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE NEW CLUB SPONSOR MERCK

Haverhill Rovers F C was given the opportunity to recently visit Merck for an inspirational insight into the cutting-edge work that is carried out at this local R & D hub.

Merck is a vibrant team of specialists in healthcare, life science and performance materials. All their employees share a love of science and a passion for technology.

FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT

By Football Development Officer, Kayleigh Steed

Firstly, I hope everyone is keeping safe and well during these uncertain times to ensure we are all healthy and

fit to return to football when it is deemed safe to do so.

I would like to praise all the managers/coaches, players and parents for how they have conducted and handled themselves given the sudden halt to their seasons.

Pre COVID-19 saw thousands of players playing football with smiles on their faces in extremely positive environments due to fantastic coaching with many teams doing extremely well in leagues and cup competitions,

so well done to you all!

Throughout the lockdown period, myself and Rhys have conducted some zoom sessions for the teams we

volunteer for throughout the season and have seen many managers follow suit to keep their players

entertained and socially active. These sessions have been fantastically supported by both players and parents and it has been great to see players socialise

with one another as well as taking part in some physical activity like that of a PE lesson.

The club are is very disappointed that fundraising activities such as the Sportsman’s dinner, fun days & tournaments have had to be either postponed or cancelled which means the staff are now working extremely

hard to ensure we all have a football club to return to after lockdown.

I cannot thank everyone enough for the support they have shown the club, the parents who are working for the

NHS who are saving the lives of others and managers who are keeping their players entertained throughout these difficult times.

Please keep an eye out for any open sessions, register your interest forms and open zoom sessions which are

being advertised on social media and if anyone has any football related queries I am still available to answer them via a phone call 07772-097974 or an email [email protected].

Take care everyone and I hope to see those smiles back on your faces, whilst playing football again soon!

WELFARE / SAFEGUARDING YOUTH

SAFEGUARDING OUR YOUTH IS OUR TOP PRIORITY.

Safeguarding of our children playing football within our club is of paramount importance. Haverhill Rovers F C has applied and has been granted permission to have the Click CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection

command) button added to its website.

CEOP is a command of the National Crime Agency and is dedicated to tackling the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and young people.

The CEOP button provides a gateway to the CEOP Safety Centre offering information and advice,

signposting to CEOP partners such as Childline, who can offer support on issues outside CEOP’s remit and reporting of suspected or known child sex offender

activity directly to CEOP for investigation.

The button has been developed for children and young

people and is offered as a convenient and potentially less intimidating method of reporting these sensitive types of crime, alternative to face-to-face and

telephone reporting to local police forces.

In support and to show our pledge to safeguarding our youth, our website provides a CEOP button

equivalent and is visible on our home page, accessed via a tab to enable it to be easy to access and view.

Should you have any concerns of possible child abuse, please contact The FA through

[email protected].

The FA has commissioned the NSPCC to provide help to encourage more people to come forward. A specific

helpline has been set up, which is 0800 023 2642.

Should anyone have any welfare concerns

within Haverhill Rovers F C, please contact Our Primary HRFC Welfare Officer LISA SHULVER

In addition to Lisa the following members of staff from HRFC and HCSA have attended the Suffolk FA Welfare Officers Workshop and are certified as Club

• The Football club has been advised that if any spectator/parent presents themselves at the club with flu like symptoms they will be encouraged to return home and call NHS 111 for further advice.

• Depending on how the situation progresses the club may need to suspend training sessions / fixtures / club activities.

• The club will continue to monitor advice from the FA and Public Health.

• If you or your child tests positive for Coronavirus, please would you let the club know ASAP. Obviously, this will be dealt with in strict confidence. Please contact either:

CAMBS. MINI SOCCER U7 RED Coaches: Jamie Beasley & Oliver Carter

Sponsors: Home = Valentine & Co, Away = The Subways & Third = The Red Lion Public House, Wratting

The Story So Far: After training together for the first

time on Sunday 19th May 2019 the boys entered a

period of playing 12 x 5v5 Mini Soccer matches in just

14 weeks against the likes of Mildenhall Youth FC U7,

Clare Town Youth Lions FC U7, Isleham Youth FC U7

White, Soham Town Rangers FC U7, Sporting 87 Youth

FC U7, Fordham Dragons FC U7, Waterbeach Colts

Youth FC U7, Ely City Youth FC U7, Papworth Blasters

FC, Brandon Town CFC U7, Haverhill Rovers FC U8

Yellow & Witchford Colts FC U7 winning 11 of those,

losing narrowly just once, scoring a whopping 142

goals and conceding just 31 goals in the process!

Players: Frankie Palazon, George Andrews, Hayden Dockerill, Kenny Beasley, Lachlan Carter, Reggie Thurgood, Sam Hinton, Tommy Shinn & Zach Lumm

The boys also took part in a 3v3 round robin morning with 2 x teams at Haverhill Rovers FC from the age group

above (U8 Black & U8 White) and didn’t look out of place playing against children that were between 1-2 years older than them as they achieved many positive outcomes. Understandably so several the boys have already caught the eyes of scouts from professional clubs and have been invited to attend training sessions with their

Player Development Centres. At the time of writing (Monday 2nd September 2019) the boys are halfway through their second 6-week focus block of training sessions that consist of a variety of games designed to embed key

coaching points of a specific topic instead of jumping from one focus to another and confusing the boys in the process.

Page 9: HAVERHILL ROVERS F C NEWSLETTER - Amazon S3...• explore league apps • sponsorship thank yous • the seniors – first team news, league table, results 2019/20 • cambs. women’s

U7 RED Coaches: Jamie Beasley & Oliver Carter

What Next?: In the immediate future the boys have 5v5 matches with Linton Aztecs FC U7, Oakington FC U7, Thurlow Youth FC U7, Saffron Walden CFC U7, separate 3v3 round robin mornings with the AFC Sudbury U7

Academy and our friends from Waterbeach Colts Youth FC U7 and also representing the club as first team mascots towards the end of September.

The boys will not be joining any Mini Soccer League until January 2020 at the earliest as this will give the boys

the flexibility to play matches in a number of formats (3v3, 4v4, Dribble Voetbal, Futsal, 5v5 w/Goalkeepers) with a wide range of opponents from all over Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Hertfordshire & Essex as

recommended by Pete Sturgess (FA National Lead for the Foundation Phase) as this will provide them with a greater variety of challenges than the well-trodden path of just organised 5v5 matches against teams in the local area, in theory leading to greater individual and collective development. The boys will also continue to

progress with 6-week focus blocks across a few topics that will also be kept alive through challenge and support on match days.

U7 – Festivals

One of our U7 teams won their age group in the Wisbech Summer tournament on 08 June 2019.

Teams had travelled from as far afield as London, Dunstable and Cleethorpes to compete.

Out of 56 U7 teams that entered that day they won! Although there was a good downpour of rain, it was a brilliant day enjoyed by all.

The U7 age groups competed in a 5 a-side tournament which consisted of 10-minute matches in a 6-team league

format. Our boys scored 58 goals between them and conceded only 5.

Our lads won the league and then progressed through a

2nd round, then quarter final, semi-final then eventually into the final.

The final was 7 minutes each way and they beat Greenbank F C, a team from Leicester in the final 3-2 after being 2-1 down.

U8 YELLOW

Rovers under 8 YELLOW managed by

Chick Hardy have had a great season. “The kids have come on so well and we have got a great team spirit going, we can’t wait for next

season Red Army”

U10 WHITE

The season this year has probably been our best

season so far, the boys have all pushed on in their development and have played some very nice football.

We have finished the season with only two festivals left to go with a record of 13 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss covering league fixtures and friendlies, with all

friendlies being 9v9 format, playing Rovers U10’s, U11’s and AFC Sudbury in this format.

End of Season Paintball

Unfortunately, we lost our Goalkeeper Daniel Rulton

during the season to a bad ankle injury, which has meant him leaving the team. Dan has been with us

since U7’s and has been a fundamental part of the group, so we have to say a big thankyou and goodbye to him.

We have welcomed a new player during the season Daniel Hodge who has fitted in well and we look

forward to working with him in the coming seasons.

Next year sees us move to the 9v9 format, which the boys are really looking forward to as is there coach.

It now pushes us a little more with formations and tactics and enabling us to push our training a little

more in these areas, preparing the boys for the full-size game.

We would also like to say a big

thankyou to our sponsor for their efforts this year in helping

us with kits and our end of season day out and look forward to next year in the

Cambridge league and the new format.

Many thanks to the club for all their support through the year and all the parents for their continued support and encouragement.

As part of our end of season we took part in paintballing in Thetford, the boys all play ‘Fortnite’ together so we thought it would be good to get them doing it for real. A good day out and great team bonding.

The morning was funded by the sponsor and covered some parents so worked well for the boys to have a really good time to celebrate the end of a good season. A few bruises here and there but a good day out.

U11 WHITE

An update on our journey so far this season and our progression into 9v9 football. We have worked hard this

year in training working on more technical aspects of the game working in units, positioning for Corners, working on offsides as well as the standard skill-based sessions.

The games have come thick and fast as we were drawn in the preliminary round of the knock out cup so had three games in that competition as well as 6

league games and a friendly before Christmas, fit that around the weather and we had a busy time.

Moving to the Cambridge Mini Soccer league has been a good transition, possibly in a lower league than we should be, but we were lifted up a league as we were

undefeated before Christmas, and as mentioned with two cup games against higher league teams than us

and only missing out in the last round after Extra time but getting to the last 32.

After Christmas in the higher league again we only had three games left form the proposed eight before the season was suspended, again undefeated in those

five but the games are starting to get a little closer.

The boys have worked really hard and are looking

forward to the next year and the move to Colts football, it doesn’t seem possible having taken this team on at U7’s that we are now moving to U12

football in September.

Below is a photograph of that original team with 5 of them still playing this year and making up the U11 Squad.

Of these five players two actually play up a year, so unfortunately we lose one this year who will be moving back

to his actual age group, So we would like to take this opportunity to wish Ellis all the success he deserves moving forward. He has worked hard in all the years he has been with the team and has put in some great performances.

We wish him every success next year.

Page 14: HAVERHILL ROVERS F C NEWSLETTER - Amazon S3...• explore league apps • sponsorship thank yous • the seniors – first team news, league table, results 2019/20 • cambs. women’s

The rest of the team will now form U12 WHITE in the Colt’s league and we are looking forward to the next

challenge, which will bring a tougher year, with players hopefully looking to then step up again into EJA football at U13, this is a big step but something I feel a number of them can do.

As a team they make you proud as a coach, the way they have developed as footballers over that time, the way

they work, the effort they put in at training, and the way they play for each other on a Saturday, you couldn’t

wish for anymore or a nicer bunch of players. Colin Newall

CAMBS. S-TECH GIRLS

U8 GIRLS

Our girls team formed in September. Following some sessions being

held at The New Croft it was clear how much enjoyment the girls found

from participating. The girls are fantastic characters who always turn

up and leave with smiley faces. All the group have progressed, learning

in an environment with the quality our venue possess has made this

much easier. When we visit opposition facilities, we see how lucky we

are!

We are very grateful and would like to thank our kit sponsor NEWTON DAVID HEALTH & SAFETY

who have provided our team a kit the team feel proud to wear.

Once we are safe to play and train once again, I’m sure the girls will be happy to return and see their

friendships they have built.

Thank you for all the parents support in getting the girls to training on time, to games in the rain and have

clapped/supported the girls no matter the result!

U14 RED

This has been an interesting season for the reds for many of the players it was their first season at 11 a side and they have adjusted well. There has been a real sense of growth this season in terms of attitudes,

responsibilities and development. We recorded our record win a resounding 17-1 victory over Soham and as this half of the season got going the boys had really found their stride in the league.

In what was to be our last game of the season we had the ref come over to tell us how he impressed he was

with the way we played and to award his own Man of the Match. A massive thankyou to S-Tech for sponsoring our home kit and to WEDO signs and labels for sponsoring our rain jackets.

As soon as we are allowed back out to train, we will be looking for some new players to add to our squad. We are looking for defenders so, if you have any previous playing experience or are looking to dual-sign for a Saturday team then feel free contact me on 07508139002 or @roverscoachMW on twitter. We had numerous players returning/

making home debuts, with Ben Bradley,

Mitch Ware etc returning to give us some

quality and making their home debuts

were Jacob Joseph, Tom Stoker,

James McCabe to name a few.

We were quite unknown to many on the

day but produced an excellent

performance, full of courage and tireless

work ethic alongside the much-needed quality at vital times in the game. Stowmarket had only conceded

10 goals all season at that point, so to score 2 goals that day shows what we delivered as a group that day. One

of the brightest performances of 2021 was when young Tom Stoker was to score a long-range strike in the final

few minutes of the game, which showed what potential this young man has.

THE FIRST TEAM

A Look Back at the First Team

Our away match v Walsham Le Willows on

11 January 2020 was in my opinion one of

the most exciting games I have been

involved with. The game had emotion,

goals, highs, lows- everything you could

imagine!

That day Walsham left us shocked as they

went into a 3-goal lead after 9 minutes

played.

We were stunned, however showed grit

and determination to pull back the score to

3-2 going in at half time.

That was the best possible situation for us, allowing time to get some instructions across to the players without

the emotion and remain calm. We knew we had the quality to deliver a great comeback. We eventually ran out

4-3 winners to our excitement and the supporters. Ryan Gibbs that day was unplayable, a menace who played

with aggression which in turn drove the team on in important moments. A brilliant turn around!

Thank You

The clubs First Team would like to thank you all for all your loyal

support this season. We are very grateful for our local sponsors

new and old continued recognition to our fantastic club.

We hope to see as many as

possible in the new season.

Once again, our support is one of

the main reasons for some outstanding displays at home. The support behind the goal is

amazing as well as from the loyal youths, older generation that go

above and beyond in all weather conditions.

From the First Team at Haverhill Rovers Marc Abbott

A VIEW FROM THE STAND ‘The Fans Voice’

This was the season that was not, and we all know why?

As the scribe of this entry I have to say and I believe there are many other supporters of my view, I am totally gutted that the efforts of the vast MAJORITY all the Thurlow Nunn League teams do NOT deserve the season to

be declared null and void. Surely, a much fairer resolution would have been a points per game award of the remaining fixtures no matter whether clubs had to play higher placed teams or not.

I know the bottom four clubs in all the leagues at the time of cessation would probably have voted against this

option but we live in a democratic world and I am sure the majority of clubs above the bottom four would probably have said PPG would have been the fairer outcome.

I feel desperately sorry for all the clubs who had invested in players and promotion expectations and to have been robbed of their opportunities, in particular Stowmarket Town, who had gone through the league fixtures unbeaten only to be robbed of this achievement. To have player and club achievements totally wiped out seems

very unfair, very disappointing and demotivating for some of the younger players who had made a big impression in their early development at this step level.

Anyway, hopefully there is an explanation which has justified this action and we will be privy in the fullness of time?

In the meantime it was great to see Marc Abbott return from the dizzy heights of Step 4 St Neots Town and halt

the slide towards the relegation zone, guiding the team to 2 wins, 6 draws and just 1 defeat since his return and we finished 14th with still two games to play against basement side Gorleston and a couple of other possible

wins and draws with a mid table finish a creditable position.

During our up and down season we saw the exciting youngster Tyger Smalls aged just 16 score perhaps

the best goal of the season in our League against Thetford in August and finish as our top scorer with

12 goals when seeking pastures new and having been scouted by several higher League Clubs. This

has now left our top scorer Ryan Gibbs with 7 goals.

With our youth development set up we welcomed another 16-year-old in Tom Stoker who has made his

mark already with 4 good goals in his short time with us before this dreaded virus brought the season to an

abrupt halt.

We also welcomed back Perry Moody from long term injury, Luke Haines from West Wratting, Ben Bradley

and James Philp from St Neots. We also said a sad goodbye and good luck to Jemel Fox and Ben Tait who

served us well but have also opted for pastures new.

Our average attendance figures were also encouraging at 139 at home and just a little less at 135 away.

Well none of us know when this awful virus will be eliminated but let’s hope it will be sooner rather than later

as withdrawal symptoms are rife and have been volunteered for domestic jobs which are not my bag really – hope everybody is coping, are safe and well and looking forward to some form of normality.

LADIES FIRST TEAM - CAMBRIDGESHIRE WOMEN’S & GIRLS COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

RESULTS SEASON 2019/20

This season had every reason to be finishing on a high for the ladies. Unfortunately, that was taken out of our hands with the

verdict of a null and void ending to the season.

For a season that never happened, it will be one of the most poignant for the set up as we move forwards to bigger and

better things. The foundations that we have laid throughout this season was going to lead us to promotion, and in my opinion,

the all-important silverware, of that I have no doubt.

As for a team which recruited from within at the start of the season, seeing the promotion of young talent, we provided five

16-year olds their debuts in the first team. With the majority leading on to feature week in week out with the first team, this

will hold us in good stead for next season, in which we will be out to prove a point to everyone in the league.

We would like to thank everyone for the support this season

which has seen both highs and lows throughout and we are all

excited to push for the title again next season. Joe

CLUB SPONSORSHIP The club is always on the lookout for new sponsorship – club sponsors, team sponsors, player sponsors, match day

sponsors. There are lots of sponsorship opportunities available for both the Youth and Senior Sectors of the Club.

PITCH SIDE PERIMETER AND GROUND ADVERTISING – MAIN PITCH AND 3G STADIA

We can offer every business the opportunity to increase local awareness by placing a perimeter advertising banner at

The Culina Hub, The New Croft. This banner will be displayed so it can be visibly seen by over 5000 visitors to the club each

week.

The advertising banners around the perimeter of the pitch can also provide back drops of photography and are ideal for any

promotional work which you may wish to carry out.

Haverhill Rovers F C can source banners or companies can provide their own. Multi-board offers are subject to negotiation.

The Main Stadium Advertising Perimeter standard banner is 10ft x 2ft 6”and has a lifespan of approximately 3 years.

For a new board to be created and supplied by HRFC costs £350 for season one. Using existing banners for the following

seasons or supplied banners costs £250 per season.

The 3G Stadium Advertising Perimeter standard banner is 8ft x 2ft and costs £500 to be created and supplied from new for

season one. For subsequent seasons, the renewal cost is £400 per season.

Larger banners are available subject to negotiation. TIP. To get your message over, please keep it simple. Bold names

with a logo and just a telephone number will catch the eye rather than too much detail.

Perimeter board contracts normally run from 01 June to the 30 May the following year, ideally on a 2-year basis. Customers

are given the opportunity to renew their agreements during the close season – May, June and July.
