Have you ever wondered who organizes such things as coffee hour on Sunday mornings, Lenten dinners during Lent, Parish picnics and such? It’s the Parish Life Commission! CHURCH INFORMATION

Baptism DatesWe have set dates throughout the year on which the service of Holy Baptism will be held. There is great advantage to having these dates set in advance. Please make a note of them and plan ahead: baptisms will be held: May 11, 2008, and November 2, 2008 at both the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services.

Good Shepherd Yoga ClassTuesdays, 12:00 noon, Parish Hall

Emily Bondy leads a Yoga class in the Parish Hall from 12:00 noon- 1:00 p.m. each Tuesday. You do not need to have any experience in Yoga to take this class. Bring your own Yoga mat. If you need suggestions regarding purchasing a Yoga mat or anything else please contact Emily at 443-0605 or [email protected].

Good Shepherd Staff Begins Recycling Program

At the encouragement of our organ-ist, Lawrence Goering, the church staff has embraced and organized a recycling program for Good Shepherd. Around the church you will notice blue containers (red in the kitchen) that have the tradi-tional recycling logo on them. All recy-clable products can go in the same bin: paper, soda cans, plastics bottles, card-board and other plastics with a number 1 or 2 on the bottom. Items no longer need to be separated. The one piece that is a challenge for us is that the city does not pick up our recycling so we give another word of thanks to Lawrence who has offered to take all of our recycling to a city drop off point. Our janitorial staff will collect the recycling throughout the building at the same time they are collect-ing trash. Please recycle.

Summer Schedule

Begins Sun., May 118:00 a.m., quiet service of Holy Communion without music10:00 a.m., Holy Communion with the Good Shepherd Choir

(at the Gospel reading children pre-K to 5th grade will be welcomed to a separate reading of the Gospel and a homily in the Sunday School area)

Hospitality HostsYour Hospitality Requested

We are beginning a sign up for every-one who is excited about helping to show hospitality on Sunday mornings at Good Shepherd. “Hospitality Hosts” (otherwise knows as Greeters) are those who help welcome newcomers to services, show them around, offer to escort them to Coffee Hour and provide any informa-tion they are interested in. We are signing up persons to serve at either the 9:00 a.m. service or the 11:00 a.m. service. The sign up board is in the entrance way to the church and in May we will hold two orientation sessions to provide more information and training. We are already a very hospitable group here at Good Shepherd and this will help to be sure that no one falls through the gaps.

The 2008 Vestry RetreatThe vestry of Good Shep-

herd met in retreat over the weekend of April 11 and 12. They gathered Friday evening at a cabin just outside the city

for an evening of fellowship and sharing and then recon-vened on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. The weekend included delicious meals and snacks prepared by vestry member Belinda Landis. The vestry retreat is a way for the vestry to discern God’s call for their ministry in the coming year and beyond and to unify themselves around it. The retreat was facilitated by Mary Trabert, an MBA consultant who has led the vestry in retreat for the last three years. Her knowledge of the group and the dynamics of Good Shepherd continued to help the vestry in it’s discernment.

The model upon which the vestry retreat was based was a model called Appreciative Inquiry. Appreciative Inquiry is a way of working whereby a group of people organize their vision and their mission based on strengths and resources rather than problems. It is a way of seeing the world - in which we focus on what we have been given by God in terms of resources, gifts and

people instead of focusing on that which is lacking. The greatest value in life comes in embracing what already works. When we expend our energy, our emotions and our spirit on embracing what is lacking we remain in a deficit position, which drains the spirit and soul. Your vestry has chosen to do their ministry in the light of the Resurrection.

To that end the retreat began with two by two interviews among vestry members. The interviews brought to the surface each member’s best ex-perience as a member of Good Shepherd, what each member values about Good Shepherd, the gifts that each person brings to the table, and their impression of what Good Shepherd’s core values are. Here is a sample of how the vestry sees the Core Values of Good Shepherd: • An unwavering commitment to Jesus’ call to serve those in need in our city, in our country and around the world. • Passionate liturgy that feeds the soul. • Firm commitment to the faith of the historic church. • Openness to the work of the Holy Spirit. • A God given diversity of reli-gious experience, social concern and political thought. • Accepting people as they come, encouraging a personal relationship with God.

On Saturday the Vestry worked from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They worked in small groups

on the three focus areas they previously discerned for their work in the coming year. The Vestry has chosen Congregational Development, Outreach and Future Funding and Needs of our Buildings and Grounds as the top areas of their major work this year. They will now work in coor-dination with the commissions that drive and direct these areas of our life together to further the work and ministry we have been given in each area.

The vestry then chose which vestry commissions they wished to serve on as vestry liaisons. They chose based on their passions and desires, rather than being assigned a commission by the Rector. The philosophy here is that we are all at our best when we are allowed to serve in ways that bring us the most joy

and in ways that we can best use our gifts and talents. The vestry members then chose

to be liaisons to the following commissions: Pam Larimar - Pastoral Care, Boo White - Pastoral Care, Ryan Bullard - Fred Frohbose - Stewardship, Rick Kroncke - Congregational Development, Jenny Baysden - Congregational Development, Bill Bullock - Finance, Mary Dawson - Christian Education, Tom Stevens - Outreach, Bert Godwin - Parish Life, Nor-man Chambliss - Buldings & Grounds, Belinda Landis - Day School.

The retreat closed with a service of Holy Eucharist in a circle. Vestry members served each other the bread and wine as they sang, “Alleluia, Alleluia, Give Thanks to the Risen Lord.”

Your vestry is off to a strong start for 2008. Please keep them in your prayers.

Stop Hunger Now Packaging Party!Saturday, May 17, 10:00 a.m. – 12Noon

Good Shepherd will hosts another Stop Hunger Packaging Party on Saturday, May 17th beginning at 10 a.m. The Easter Offer-ing collected over $3,000 for the Stop Hun-ger Now. All the parishioners who worked the last packaging found it to be a very special and fun time. Being able to actually have hands on experience in feeding some of our world’s hungry was very rewarding. Please give yourself a special treat and come work on May 17th. There is a place and need for everyone. We especially need our young people and teens. If any need com-munity hours, here is a great place to get them.

We were complemented for our smooth action and speed. Rick Kearney said he had never had a group bag 15,000 meals and clean up in just 2 1⁄2 hours. He was amazed and we were so proud.

Visiting Priest/Deacon from Costa Rica

Packing Meals for Stop Hunger Now

We are very excited to be one of four parishes chosen to host a Priest or Deacon from the Diocese of Costa Rica for a two week time period. Our guest will arrive on the afternoon of Sunday, June 22nd and will stay until the afternoon of Sunday, July 6th. While here they will experience life in our parish, attending vestry meetings, staff meetings, commis-sion meetings, etc. They will also be working with Scott, Stephanie, and Louise, focusing on sermon preparation, lay leadership-skills, and empowering volunteers especially in the areas of Christian Formation and Outreach. Bishop Monterroso has requested this

period of training for his clergy in hopes that they will return to Costa Rica with a heightened awareness of what makes a good message, focused, and energized. As important as it is for our visiting clergy to spend time with the clergy of Good Shepherd, it is equally important for them to spend time with you, the people of Good Shepherd. We will have several opportunities for you to gather with them and share your experiences as volunteers and members of a thriving parish.

Louise is also looking for fami-lies or individuals that may be willing to host our visitor for

several nights, people who would be willing to entertain him/her with gatherings in their homes. Louise will be in Costa Rica on June 22nd and is hoping that someone in the congregation will volunteer to pick up our visitor in Raleigh on the afternoon of the 22nd and deliver our guest to the host family.

This is a great opportunity for us as a parish to share in fellow-ship with our companion diocese of Costa Rica. Please contact Louise Anderson, 641-0617 or 883-9864 if you would like to help host our visitor in any way.

Have you heard? The friends and admirers of

Jack MacRae banded together to give him an unusual present for his 88th birthday—easier access to his back door. Those who have experienced the murder-ously steep steps at the MacRae’s back door will understand why his friends found this idea so appealing! John Bonner and Lewis Booth pitched in to help a professional, Bob Montgomery, with the construction of the ramp. Congratulations to Jack on his 88th birthday!

Ashley Churchill Young, grand-daughter of Churchill Young, is a sophomore at UNC -- Greens-boro majoring in English with a concentration in secondary education. Ashley is spending her 2008 spring semester studying Scottish history and literature at Strathclyde University, just south of Glasgow, Scotland.

A warm welcome back to Churchill Young. She is back with us at Good Shepherd and is now living at Tau Valley Apartments.

With spring comes new life, and there are several precious new lives for us to celebrate at Good Shepherd:

Kip and Lisa Meadows have a new daughter, Sadie Estelle, born February 26. She weighed 7 lbs. 9 oz. Proud grandparents are Frank and Notie Vay Meadows.

Bob and Betty Norman have a new grandson. Marshall Shannon Freund was born March 5, weigh-ing in at 7 lbs. 9 oz., to Shannon and Scott Freund of Alpharetta, Georgia.

John and Debbie Bonner wel-comed their new granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth Perry. Rachel was born March 7, weighing 7 lbs. 7 oz., to parents Kate and Jona-than Perry.

Ryan and Ingrid Bullard have a second beautiful daughter, Addison Carrie, born March 22, weighing 5 lbs. 11 oz. Everyone is doing well.

On March 15th, the Rocky Piano Teachers Association held its annual PianOlympics at Corner-stone Independent Baptist Church. About 120 students competed, playing two memorized composi-tions each. Several pupils of Good Shepherd’s Choirmaster, Lawrence Goering, won awards. Courtney Bondy received Level One Honor-able Mention; Caroline Buckner won First Place in Level Two; and Benton Moss won First Place in Level Six. Malone Bondy received a superior rating in Level One and Marion Mann received a superior rating in Level Two. Congratula-tions to Lawrence and his fine young musicians.

Parishioner Jordan Harrison, student of Joan Vick, received a superior rating in Level Four of PianOlympics. Congratulations to Jordan.

Our own Victoria Sowers, a fiber artist and weaver, is on the move with her amazing and beautiful designs. She has a show up in the Halle Cultural Arts Center in Apex through May. She also has tapestries and rugs hanging in the Jewel Box Theatre. She takes her 300-year-old antique loom to schools and communities in five states to create a woven fabric time capsule. We are proud of you Victoria.

As always, this is your news, so please send it to:

April is that time of year where in most parts of our country the color green starts showing up in yards, gardens, orchards and fields. The color green in nature is another reminder of the goodness of God in providing for the physi-cal needs of all His creatures. The color green also reminds us that God keeps His promises, such as this one recorded in Genesis 8:22 (NIV): “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”

God also made this promise of His goodness to the children of Israel as they were in the process of moving into the Promised Land: “If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my com-mands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live safely in your land.” (Leviticus 26:3-5 NIV)

God is so good that He also provides for the physical needs of those who do not believe in or worship Him. The great Protestant Reformer, Martin Luther, remind-ed us of this when he explained the petition “Give us this day our daily bread” in this way: “God gives daily bread indeed without our prayer, also to all the wicked, but we pray in this petition that He would lead us to know it and to receive our daily bread with thanksgiving.”

In Isaiah 55:10-11 (NIV) we read these words: “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for

the eater, so is My word that goes out from My mouth: It will not re-turn to Me empty, but will accom-plish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

This passage reminds us as God’s people that God is both good and gracious. We see His goodness in meeting all our physi-cal needs but we see His grace (undeserved love) in supplying all our spiritual needs. Children of God are His stewards who use everything at their disposal for God’s purposes. God’s stewards, like green plants, receive the necessary nourishment to grow in their faith and in producing good works, such as giving generously of their financial resources, time and unique abilities.

May all of us as God’s redeemed stewards, like plants on the earth, bud, blossom, mature and produce good fruit (words and actions) that brings glory to our good and gracious God and bless-ings to His people.

“The Color Green”

Become a Meals-on-Wheels Volunteer

Good Shepherd Meals-onWheels needs two volunteers for the Gold Route. The Gold Route is the third Tuesday of each month. It only takes about a half hour of your time once a month and if offers an invaluable service to the community. Meals-on-Wheels is a non-profit meal program that provides meals to the Rocky Mount community. Through Meals-on-Wheels, seniors who could not or would not other-wise eat properly are provided with services that help them live a healthy and enjoyable life. A volunteer’s role is far more important than the meals they deliver: • They are often the only contact our clients have all day. • They provide a warm smile and a caring attitude. • They are a safety check to help ensure our clients’ well being. • They are the eyes and ears of Meals-on-Wheels and often alert us to clients’ additional needs.

This is a very rewarding min-istry! Please call Katie Rose at 442-2768 if you are interested.

Greetings Everyone! The Day School will be in full swing over the next few months. The children are excited as we head into the Spring/Summer season. Parents and children alike enjoyed all the festivities from the Week of the Young Child Celebrations. The Week of the Young Child is celebrated annually to highlight children’s issues and the early education field. We enjoyed such activities as adorn-ing our halls with banners, recognizing the ones who care for the little ones, and ending our week at the Down East Partner-ship’s Playground for a family fun day.

On Wednesday, May 14th, we will have a car seat clinic (car seat check). I would like to invite all parishioners, with young children or grandchildren to this event to be sure you are keeping your little ones as safe as possible while in their car seats. You can gain knowledge on how to be sure the car seat is properly installed. The clinic will take place from 3-5 p.m. in the church parking lot. Law enforcement officers will be available to answer any questions that may arise.

Graduation this year is Friday, May 16th at 10:00 a.m. Please join us as we get ready to see our Older Preschoolers transition into the school setting. This year’s graduates are: Alaya Banks, Harmonie Braswell, Timothy DeLoach, Henry Forrester, and Savion Meeks. The children are excited about going off to “big school!” It is amazing to see how quickly the children have grown and developed.

Great News! Our annual compliance visit was a success! I would like to thank the Day School staff for working so hard to get ready for the visit. Our licensing consultant was pleased with our Day School, record keeping, and our program as a whole! Way to go Good Shepherd Day School! We are waiting to hear the results from our Food Program visit last month.

Our library walks will continue this summer. Volunteers are always needed and welcome. The children really enjoy taking the walk and looking at all the sights and hearing the sounds of the community. The trip usually takes about an hour and is great exercise. If you would like to volunteer please feel free to call the Day School at 442-1092 or e-mail us [email protected]

Lets Welcome our new employees to the Day School. Angela Jones will be one of our lead teachers with the Day School, while Amanda Little and Latisha Adams will be part time floaters and substitutes.

I would like to extend a hearty wel-come to our newest families. Join me in welcoming the Lisson’s, the Gaines’ , and the Pulley/Street’s. We thank them for choosing Good Shepherd Day School.

Have a great Spring and Summer season!
