    Making Lightning

    Objectives:

To bend electricity in order to make lightning

    Materials

    Rubber glove

    Plastic fork

    Tin Foil

    Wood or lastic cutting board

Styrofoam late or rubber balloon !ead of hair or "ool

    #ool, lo"$humidity day %& '() humidity, & *( F temerature+

    Procedure

    - Fold tin foil around your lastic fork so that it looks like a bigsatula- Make sure it.s as /at as ossible "ith no shar

corners-0- Put on the rubber glove and use your gloved hand to rub the

Styrofoam late or rubber balloon on your hair or "ool-

1- Place the late or balloon on your cutting board, and use thegloved hand to ick u your tin foil satula-

'- Place the tin foil art of your satula on the balloon or late-Touch the foil "ith your other hand- What happened? Ho canyou e!plain hat you sa?

(- Pull the satula u from the balloon or late, and touch itagain- What happened this ti"e? Did you e!pect that?

2- 34eriment "ith other materials- Recharge your chargedob5ect using your hair or "ool if necessary- Does your handspar# hen it touches the balloon? Why do you thin# this is so?

    Homemade Batte y

    Objective:

to kno" ho" a battery "orks

to make other uses of everyday things

    Materials:

A lemon, or other citrus fruit

    6 %or smaller+ gauge coer "ire

    Wire strier7clier

    A gro"n$u or older friend

Steel aer cli, small galvanized nail %one that is covered in 8inc+, or a iece of 8inc

    %ideal+

    Procedure

    - Ask your gro"n$u to use the "ire striers to 9rst stripabout 0 70 inches of lastic

insulation o: the coer "ire- Then, re;uest that the gro"n$u clipthat iece of stried

"ire o: of the main roll-

0- #arefully straighten the steel aer cli- f they are toofar aart, the matter might lose their "ay-

6- This time, touch your moistened tongue to both "ire ends- What do you notice?

    Results

When you touched your tongue to 5ust the coer "ire, you most likely "ould not have noticed

anything unusual- When you touched your tongue to ?@T! of the metal ends, you might have

felt a tingle, or noticed a metallic taste-

    Magnetism from Electricity

    >n 60, the Banish hysicist !ans @ersted %***C6(+ noticed that acomass needle "as de/ected at right angles to a "ire carrying an electriccurrent- Since a comass needle is de/ected by a magnet, he concluded

that the electric current someho" caused a magnetic 9eld around the "ire-Further studies by @ersted roved that any "ire carrying an electric currenthas a magnetic 9eld around it- @erstedDs discovery started the study ofelectromagnetism and the use of an electromagnet %device that uses anelectric current to roduce a concentrated magnetic 9eld+-

    >n this ro5ect, you "ill determine the direction of a magnetic 9eld around acurrent$carrying "ire- =ou "ill determine the e:ect of the direction of anelectric current in a current$carrying "ire on the attern of the magnetic

9eld around it- =ou "ill also make an electromagnet, determine its olarity, and test its strength-

    Objective:

To determine the direction of a magnetic 9eld around a current$carrying"ire-

    Materials

    encil ruler

    sheet of coy aer

    comass

    -($volt B battery

    "ire strier

6$inch %'($cm+ iece of 0$ or 00$gauge insulated singlestrand "ire

    Procedure

'- First rotate the comass so that E on the comass is in line "ith theneedle ointing north- Then lift the comass and rotate the aer sothat its comass directions match those on the comass- Relace thecomass on the aer-

(- Place the battery on the east side of the aer, "ith the negativeterminal of the battery ointing south-
