Potiphar does not enter the text until verse 19. By the Hebrew, she calls out to the other male servants and tells them that the Hebrew servant he (Potiphar) brought in to mock us tried to rape me! I screamed and he ran away!

Mrs. Potiphar sets up a situation that gives Potiphar no choice but to take action against Joseph or lose face.

He has to choose to accept Mrs. P’s word or the slave’s. Does he really want others to know that his wife is nasty?If she seeks sex with a slave, what does that say him?

16She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17Then she told him this story: “That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.” 19When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. 20Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Hugonian school would suggest that he was angry not with Joseph, but with Mrs. P. and the no-win situation that she created.
Commentators are in agreement that Potiphar did not think that Joseph was guilty seeing that he did not kill Joseph on the spot.
Placing him in the Kings prison would allow Potiphar to perhaps put in a good word for him in a prison that was perhaps better than “lower” prisons.
Note: Egypt was one of the only ancient nations to use prisons.
This lends credence to the integrity of the text.
16She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17Then she told him this story: “That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.” 19When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. 20Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.
your heart, 2for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you prosperity. 3Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of
your heart. 4Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man. 5Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding; 6in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight. 7Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil. 8This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.
