Falcon Accelerators The 32 mhz accelerator boards are now available for sale in the United States. We, ATY Computer (510) 482-3775, have the first batch in stock. Online Britannica The Encyclopedia Britannica (EB) is going on-line electronically.

In an article by John Markoff of the New York Times News Service published in the San Diego Union-Tribune 940208 was cited the intention to provide distribution via Internet.

Currently, the database and its software interface are being tested at San Diego State University (SDSU). Beginning in the fall, the base will be available to universities by a variety of information retrieval methods developed by Internet researchers and undergoing commercialization. Later, the data base will be available to a larger commercial audience, after the academic distribution provides testing for the electronic version.

The electronic EB, Britannica Online, being tested at SDSU uses "hypertext" links between the four components of EB via Mosaic software, developed by WAlS Inc. (Menlo Park, CA) v ia networked personal computers and workstations. This software was developed at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications at the Univ. of Illinois (Chapaign-Urbana).

The interface displays documents and illustrations, highlights words and phrases with links to other docs by clicking on a highlighted block of text or illustration.

EB execs plan pricing the base to universities as subscription based on student population. Pricing of general commercial distribution is still being d~scussed but might be done reference by reference; enabled by the WAlS and Mosaic software.

Economics were the basis for EB publishing themselves rather than allying w ~ t h an existing online, said EB exec Joseph Esposito, "..can't make any money licensing your content." "..many of the content providers have put themselves in a position where they're held hostage to the on-line services." At 225 years, EB is the oldest continuously published encyclopedia in the English language, and the largest revenue, $550 million. Currently the 32 volume reference contains 44 million words and 25,000 illustrations (online: 300 million characters, 2000 illus.) Its four components are the Index, the Pro-, Micro-, and Macro- pedias. The hypertext links are only in the online

EB is too large a database for current CDROM (this msg may get moved). The article makes no mention of media requirements, compression tech, specific platform for the software or other important info. I've been trying to find out something about WAIS and Mosaic, and downloaded a recent 931201 EJournal article from the DigiPub library covering digital publishing hypertext authoring and retrieval software over multiple platforms, DOS w l & wlo Windows, Mac, Sun, etc. but no mention of Mosaic or WAIS.

Anybody know anything about this development? I may leave a post somewhere to see if any SDSU student or faculty have anything to say from experience. (M.EASTER, CAT4, TOP1 9, MSG:203/M475)

New BBS Package I one of three beta testers for a new BBS software package known as ForeSight. This BBS is by far the best BBS in it's class. I have been running a BBS now since July. When I first decided to try running a BBS I tried every PD, Shareware, and commercial BBS program available for the STITTlFalcon. I tried Triplink, Express, Forem, Turbo, Rat Soft, Transdescence, Vulcan Embassy, ST Keep and many others. Of all of the BBS systems Rat Soft is the only BBS that in my opinion competes with Foresight, and maybe at this point Rat Soft is slightly better (not much). The place where ForeSight beats them all is that it is DONATION WARE. My board is going to be one of the official distribution and support boards once the author decides to release it. Once released I will upload it to GEnie. This BBS will be FULLY FUNCTIONAL and you only have to send money if you feel like it. There will be no registration necessary if you don't want to and i f you do then you can send as much or as little as you feel.

Well my main purpose for posting this message is because the author and I would like to see what your reactions are about this Idea. If you are interested in running a BBS and don't want to pay the high prices for the software then ForeSight is the answer. ForeSight has complete Ansi translation and support for IG, UBT Graphics (Freeze Dried Term needed), Ascii, and VT52. If you are interested let me know. We want to know how many people might like this software. I was running my BBS with the Authors older BBS software called UBBS. The author of this BBS is also a friend friend of Aaron Hopkins (Freeze Dried) and helped with some of the Freeze Dried stuff. Aaron hopkins has helped put together a Split Screen chat mode for ForeSight and a Full Screen message editor for Foresight.

Any way, the number for my BBS is (310)523-1644. If you call I would suggest using Ansi i f you have AnsiTerm if you have Freeze Dried Term use the UBBS graphics mode (I'm not taking full advantage of this yet though.) If you call between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 11:OO p.m. you can try calling for a chat and I'll jump in to answer any of your questions. Oh by the way, when you call for a chat the BBS will play the Gilligan's Island MOD l o get my attention. It's kind of a neat little feature. I have no transfer sections at this time because the transfer section is still under developement. I will eventually compile a list of the many features the BBS has, but it will lake quite a while. Falcon Speed 6.2 is ready! It has some minor internal changes, but here's the meat:

1. The modem port works under DOS, at speeds up to 57600 baud.

2. Hard disk partitions mapped to DOS can now be up to 128 megabytes in size.
