Oh what a wonderful world- my reaction to flicking through the photos of what has gone on at MSB in the first

5 weeks of this term.

Each of has a part to play, and obviously many have had a go as seen in the photos.

Unfortunately, over 30 of our school community from January are no longer with us, for reasons many and

varied. Yes, it is not easy being steady Mon to Friday students for 10 weeks at a time. But the future of each and

every one of us depends on it, as Government Budget pressures continue to reduce the possibilities of social

security income.

A good education will be needed in 5 or so years time for an income, a job. So true: no pain, no gain.

Next year at MSB, we will start with over 70 students new to the college as well as 10 new teachers - about a

third of the school. With painting completed, the buildings shine. By January 2015, over 20 more classrooms

have been made available for use in the past 18 months. The extra 10 beds in boys’ boarding will be ready by

December, and the St Mary’s campus has proved a more pleasant environment for the year 8 (and year 7) boys.

Chris and Flo who have worked in Kowanyama the last few years will be house parents in St Mary’s next year.

Over 40 turned up, plus 16 MSB staff, to our Open day on Saturday, and present indications are that next year,

we will have our biggest day student enrolment since 2008.

Congratulations to Emily Pensini who prepared such a marvellous NAIDOC celebration (August 22), AGAIN.

Thanks to those who brought food from their communities, the fish was great. Miss Standen’s Year 9 prepared a

beautiful morning tea, and both the Torres Strait and Indigenous dancers put on a great performance. Special

thanks to Colin Malachi for getting the Gulf boys to perform so well.

So for each one of us

“Let your light shine”, there is

space and time for each of us to

shine as part of the myriad of

stars.

QTAC All year 12 students have been given this year’s QTAC Guide, and we have discussed the process of applying for further study in 2015. QTAC is now open for applications online, and will close for ‘on time’ applications on the 30th September 2014. I encourage you to discuss the varying options available for your student in light of this QTAC information, and courses available – remembering that you also apply to TAFE through QTAC. If you have any queries about this process, please don’t hesitate to contact me, as each year brings a variety of changes to the system.

I have asked students to talk through this information with their parents and carers, and come in together to discuss the process further with myself, settle on your shortlist of courses, and/or to finalise your application. Please make a time through the office, so that we can work through all possible options.

QCS The QCS test is fast approaching. It will be held in Week 8, the 2nd and 3rd of September. Thank you to each of the students for their hard work in preparing for this exam – it is a requirement for students to attain their Overall Position (OP). I will disseminate the QCS schedule to students next week. YEAR 10 Thank you to all year 10 students and parents who have completed the Subject Selection process for year 10s moving into year 11 in 2015. It is a valuable time during which important choices are made about student pathways into their future. It is also a timely reminder that study in the senior school relies on a certain level of Literacy and Numeracy to be able to access different courses. We also have prerequisites for academic subjects, which are listed in the Subject Selection Handbook. Please familiarise yourself with these learning guidelines, to ensure you are on the right track to enter year 11 on your chosen pathway. YEAR 8 Towards the end of term we will be talking to our year 8 students about their future planning and subject selection for year 9, 2015. We are currently asking students about their preferred subjects, so that we can organise a best fit for subject lines for these students. We will be asking students to select elective choices for next year in the coming weeks, with an Elective Subject Selection form, that will come home for signature. Please take the opportunity to discuss options with your students, and link them to their strengths and areas of interest.

Term 3 Assessment All students will be sitting exams and submitting their assignments through their classes in week 10, with senior Exam Block Tuesday 16th – Thursday 18th September. Senior students will be required to attend school on these days, with classes running while not in exams. All junior classes will continue with their lesson times to enable students to complete all of their assessment. An Exam Block Schedule will be published in the next few weeks. A reminder to all students and their carers also – Assessment is to be handed in on the due date, as per QSA requirements. If an extension is requested, it must be done well prior to the due date of the assessment piece, and be based on extenuating circumstances. If you are absent on the due date, a medical certificate is required. In all other circumstances student work will be graded on the due date with the information within the teacher’s possession at the time (this means – make sure you hand in your rough drafts for feedback!). Many thanks, Janine Conolly

PHYSICS UPDATE

Both the Year 11 and Year 12 students have had their courses aligned with

each other. For the remainder of the year the topics are ‘Cosmology ‘and

‘Space Physics’. In terms of the assessment, Year 12 students are using

primary data, secondary data and historical data to assist in their Extended

Experimental Investigation (EEI).

Their topic is the sourcing of efficient power to assist in space flight and

powering inter-planetary colonies. This topic was encouraged due to the

Lunar colonisation program and the Mars One program, which both have

apparent launch dates in the near future. Through the use of Photo-Voltaic

Cells and data logging, students are to link the experiment to Space Physics

and undergo thorough investigations.

“Nikie bikies’, pink jumpsuits and vicious lawlessness

Mount St Bernard College Legal Studies students participated in a Business Liaison Association -sponsored event, a Rule of Law Institute’ presentation at Atherton State High School in July. Topics included anti-discrimination laws, alcohol management plans, the new ’bikie ‘ laws (VLAD) and High court challenges plus much more… Left: Rule of Law presenters, Jackie Charles and Nick Clark (centre) with students Siyesha Douglas, Ludovicka Miamel, Roscoe Devine & Tom Cooney. (L-R)

Roscoe: “The law is complex. It was interesting to learn that law-makers /politicians have so many instruments that impinge on people’s private and social lives. It’s difficult to balance the safety of the community with human rights like the freedom to associate. “ Tom: “It was very interesting—especially the information about VLAD and the Consorting laws in NSW. Seems unfair for people to get jail time for hanging out with their mates” Ludovicka: The VLAD Act imprisoned people for associating with bikie gang members and a group consists of three people. The wording of this Act is so broad that any group targeted by government is at risk. Good laws require good drafting and need to be thought through so that they don’t discriminate. Siyesha: The issue of alcohol management plans relates to many aboriginal communities. The fact that the High Court has ruled that they are yes, racially discriminatory, but ‘special measures’ that should be temporary , gives hope to indigenous communities that they have the power and ability to solve problems of alcohol abuse and domestic violence.

We consider that every week is Science week at MSB and our practical, hands-on approach to science continues in Term 3 with an emphasis on Physics. Year 8’s are discovering the world of Isaac Newton and investigating friction using Newton spring balances. Year 9’s are investigating static and current electricity and simple circuits. Year 10’s are looking into the Physics of car crashes and the safety features of modern cars. In their unit on ‘Space Physics’, Year 11 and 12 students are currently learning about the photoelectric effect with the year 12’s designing an extended experimental investigation into the optimum angle for maximum output of current. See “Physics Update” for more detail on this. Can you design a device to allow an egg to survive a 2-story fall? The year 9.4 transition Science class can! In celebration of Science week, the MSB Science department is hosting a couple of special events. On Wednesday 20th we hosted a community forum with the theme of “Food for the future: Science feeding the world” We had a range of interesting speakers lined up, including Michelle Bell-Turner from Mungalli Creek Dairy, and ethno-botanist Gerry Turpin. Our year 9 students involved with the Stephanie Alexander kitchen garden program also attended along with their teacher Ms. Leanne Standen. Our other Science week event will be the “Spectacular Science” displays on our open day this Saturday. These will involve flames, explosions, slime and everything else that makes Science such fun. To top it all off -weather permitting– Mr Will Trueman will be dusting off his 40cm reflecting telescope at 6:30 pm Saturday on the top oval and will be hosting an astronomy evening. This is probably the biggest instrument of its kind on the Tablelands so if the weather looks clear, make it a must-do! Look for photos of Science week in the next newsletter.

Jim will compete in the Javelin, Long jump and Triple Jump at this event. He will need to travel to Brisbane and is currently fundraising to enable himself to get there. The State Championships are in Brisbane this year and will cost Jim’s family around $900 to get him there, so if your see Jim or know his family please buy a raffle ticket from him to help his cause. By Anne Quinn

A big congratulations to all these students, they all finished within the top 10 in Peninsula an outstanding effort. A huge congratulations to Jim who is off to the State championships.

Senior Agriculture Report In Term 3 senior Agriculture students are studying a unit on the principles of horticulture. The focus is the development of knowledge of practical skills in propagating plants, growing them and maintaining their health. This should equip students for careers in the plant nursery trade as well as work on farms. Students have investigated the structures in flowers, their roles in pollination and the various ways in which pollen is transferred between flowers. Experiments have been conducted on the requirements for the germination of seeds. A focus has been on Australian native plants such as Acacia many of which are adapted to indigenous ‘fire stick’ farming. The seeds have been boiled for various lengths of time to determine the optimum amount of heat to produce the best results.

Senior Agriculture student Marzena Greenwool at work taking plant cuttings and potting them up.

A common practice to mass produce plants in nurseries is through the use of cuttings. Sections of stems are cut into short lengths, treated with hormones to promote root development, placed in soil and carefully grown for months in carefully controlled conditions. Great skill is involved in getting high survival of cuttings with the students responding to the challenge. Over the past few weeks we have planted a range of heirloom vegetables which we expect to harvest next term. This includes a variety of unusually coloured tomatoes such as Black Russian (a purple/black) and Tigerella (red and yellow striped) as well as a watermelon with orange flesh and multi-coloured sweet corn. Next term is going to be a delicious time in the Agriculture department! Will Trueman - Agriculture Teacher

A range of ‘heirloom’ tomatoes are being grown at the college with seeds sourced from the Diggers Garden Club.

YEAR 8 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Some of the Year 8 students are being further enriched with the topic : Morality. Achieving the subject area of Morality Issues, students are currently completing posters with a variety of simple cultural pictures (similar to a quilt) and picture story books. Upon completion, the aim is for both Herberton Hospital and Ozcare in Malanda to receive these items. Some of the elderly people needing a higher level of care sometimes are not visited by family nor friends. Some of the elderly people may have an issue with their short term memory. The aim of the posters and story books is to provide visual stimulation and to let the people in care know they are in our thoughts.

What to do with old encyclopaedias...

It’s a problem facing many libraries. With internet searching and on–line information in abundance, encyclopaedias have become a thing of the past -with a hefty landfill footprint .

Seniors, Brodie Archer and Zac Munckton found a solution. They decorated their favourite place - the library - with an ‘encyclotable’ or is it a, ‘tablopaedia’. Well done gentlemen on your aesthetically pleasing, and creative approach to recycling boring old books. From the Library—’the cool of school ‘ where books are never ‘boring’

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Several activities have passed by on the calendar to emphasize the diversity in Mathematics. As usual, the number of students attending the Monday afternoon tutoring sessions are regular. Students are working well together and with the help of a rotating roster of teachers with a background in Mathematics and other teachers to assist with Numeracy and Literacy concepts. If any other parents or guardians are interested for their child to attend, please make contact.

The Year 9 Enrichment Mathematics camp was held from Monday to Wednesday, 28-30 July. Acknowledgement needs to be given to Eliza Bookall, Caleb Mathews and Jack Tresize. These three students were commended by staff members from other schools on their contributions and involvement during the camp. Access to some general comments and photos regarding the camp may occur via accessing Tinaroo Environmental Education Centre’s website, followed by: selecting the “Programs” option and selecting the “Year 9 Maths Camp” option on the left hand side. On Thursday, 7 August, was the local Year 8 Mathematics quiz. The two winning teams from the Atherton Tablelands would compete against the four winning teams in Cairns and the two winning teams from the Babinda to Innisfail region. The MSB team consisted of the captain David Cassels and Misti Jessop and Joshua Lane. While the MSB team was unable to make it to the round in Cairns, they were acknowledged as being late entrants to the competition and tackled a diverse range of Mathematical problems. We at MSB should be very proud of their contribution they have made to our MSB name! Next was the ICAS Mathematics competition. A dozen Year 8 students and several students from both Year 9 and Year 10 were challenged with a test ranging in time of either 90 or 100 minutes. Results for the competition should be known in the first few weeks of Term 4.

While there are a number of external events occurring in Mathematics, there are still a range of activities occurring in the classroom. Students have been provided a task in Math A associated with surveying and using tools in the trade. In the upcoming weeks students will have the oppor-tunity of using a Dumpy Level to see how Mathematics is essential beyond the school years. Similarly, the students in both Year 11 and Year 12 Pre-Vocational Mathematics have made spinners for a probability task. The intent is to compare what happens in both fair (unbiased) and unfair (biased) situations.

While providing a learning environment in Mathematics, we have been continuing on ensuring students are able to solve both small and large problems through their own curiosity. By Benjamin Smith - Math Co-ordinator

Jane Heraghty - Visiting Artist Mount St Bernard art students, were recently treated to a visit, from Jane Heraghty, an artist from Cairns. The students were absolutely fascinated by Jane’s freedom and expression as a sculptural artist. Collaboratively, students selected recycled objects such as; toys, ornaments, plastic spoons, etc. to create sculptural art works. The students were encouraged to use coloured pigments in plaster-of-paris, to stick, paint and join their objects together. It was wonderful to see the students explore abstract thoughts, and construction of mixed-media sculptures. Breaking down the thought processes of Realism. Jane allowed the students to stand around a table and move freely in the space, cracking porcelain with hammers and unscrewing plastic toys. Thelma Bani described the workshop as, ‘it’s a bit weird, but good to use recycled toys, instead of throwing them in the bin, it’s a messy wonderland!’ Nathan Dowling said: “It was a bit messy, but it was great to have a chance to express your imagination in any form you want-ed. There are no limits or any boundaries to what she can create.” Ursula Tate said: ”It was interesting to experience what an artist does every day.”

News from Class 9.2 by Bugum Anson In my 9.2 class there are only eight of us. There are three boys and five girls in our class. We all love the way we are all like brothers and sisters in class. My class is sometimes noisy because some of us like to laugh a lot. Our home form teacher was Mr Paul King but now he isn’t here so they had to replace him with Mr Keith Smith. Most of us are mainly Indigenous students and are also boarders. There are many subjects such as maths, English, SOSE, Religion, Science, Art, ICT-MM and PDHPE. One of my favourite subjects is Science. Our Science Teacher is Mr Ben Smith and we all love him. On 24th of July Mr Ben Smith and our class had an experiment using the word Electronic. And it was very fun because Joyce stood on a container and she touches the top of the Sphere thing and her hair slowly went up. It was very fun that day. In term one and two of SOSE we learned about the History of World War One. Now in term three we are learning about Geography. The happy thing for us was having a party for Miss Kerry Congoo. For the memories on every Tuesday during Home-Form we go to Shalom and grab some Lemons.

Work Experience

Little Scholars

Kindergarten

During Week 7 of last term, I went to

Little Scholars Kindergarten in Herberton

for work experience. I enjoyed helping

by feeding the children and playing games

with them. I also really enjoyed making

their beds and helping the children to

settle so that they could have a midday

sleep. The children were all so kind and

lovely. They all listened well and followed

instructions from the teacher and I.

I would like to say thank you to the staff

and children of Little Scholars for being

so welcoming and helping make my work

experience so enjoyable. I look forward

to working with children in my

future.

Thank you

Pearl Mauga.

Work Experience

Atherton Hairdressers During week 7 of last term I attended work experience at the Atherton Hairdressers as part of the work education programme at MSB. I really enjoyed being part of the team at the salon. I found it interesting learning about how a salon operates and what working as a hairdresser requires. I was lucky enough to get my hair done; I had a shampoo and massage (which felt great) and then my hair was dried and straightened at the same time. I was so nervous to start my work experience; I was hesitant about going as I was stepping out of my comfort zone. By the end of the week, though, I didn’t want to leave! When the salon was not busy, I learnt how to curl with a hair straighten-er and straighten hair by using a hair dryer and a round brush. Let’s just say I still haven’t mastered how to do the straightening yet. To be a hairdresser you need a Certificate 3 in Hairdressing and you can do the courses at either TAFE or College. I learnt that as a hairdresser you need good conversation and listening skills. Overall I really enjoyed my week at the Atherton Hairdresser and I learnt heaps but now that I’ve seen what being a hairdresser is like, I don’t think it’s for me. I’d like to thank the staff at the Atherton Hairdresser for being so helpful and for letting me do my work experience there.
