Hello Fellow Lions and Friends. It is hard to believe that this is my last newsletter as District Governor of 5M8. What happened to spring? We go from cool to hot with nothing be-tween but lots of rain. I hope you Lion farmers got you seeding done, if not, be patient, the weather will change soon, for it is Minnesota.

I have been busy getting ready for my term as Governor. I have been working on filling my 5M8 Cabinet, and getting all the information on who are the officers for the Clubs next year. You see, all that information must be turned into Inter-national plus to the MD5M Secretary to com-plete the manuals for the multi district and our dis-trict. All this information is compiled into a CD for each club. We have an issue that clubs must solve. That is the time you hold your elections of officers. Each club

should investigate your bylaws and change the election times of the year, completing the elec-tions by the month of April. The PU101, new officer report, is due May 15th of each year, which can be recorded on line to Interna-tional. By not having this completed, issues arise. 1st of all, your secretary loses points on the Governor’s contest. 2nd, it makes it difficult for the Dis-trict Governor Elect to complete their report to the Multiple District Office. More informa-tion on the issue will be brought up at the Zones meetings to be held next year.

Congratulations to all the Zones that held zone projects. All the reports of those pro-

jects have been posi-tive. Keep up the good work Zone Chairs and their clubs of the Re-gions. Your dedication to “WE SERVE” has helped many people in the area and around the world. Thank You!

I had the privilege of inducting new offi-cers into the Staples 93 Lions Club plus induct 14 new Lions members into the Watkins Lions Club this last month. Con-gratulations to both clubs. It is enjoyable to do these functions to see the excitement and dedication of each Lion that’s in-volved. If you want

My schedule for June 30th to July 9th is off to Toronto to be inducted as your Governor of 2014-2015.

Still need a 2nd Vice District Governor. For those who qualify, please consider this position.

you to advance to the next level of serve and leadership. You will meet hundreds of new people as you advance to District Governor. It is truly a life changing adventure. This past month I traveled to New Munich for a zone meet-ing; Sauk Rapids Riverside Lions Club for a Waffle Breakfast; Can Do Canines graduation, 17 service dogs were certified; and a Cabinet meeting. The East Central Leo Club (which I am the Ad-visor) will help with the region 1 zone 1 zone project, pack-ing meals for the food shelves of Pine County. June 1st Bowlus Lions Club will be having their Charter Night. June 7th MN Lions Hearing Foundation will be hosting the De-Feet Hearing Loss Walk at the MN Land-scape Arboretum. I’m working hard to be a good representa-tive of our district.

The district is still seeking a Second Vice District Governor for 2014-2015.

I wanted to talk about what it is like to be an officer in your local club, in our district. And what it takes to advance through the ranks. I think it is an honor to serve ones club by being on the Board of Directors. A Lion serving as Vice President serves for several years learning what it takes to serve as Club President. It’s encouraged to attend officer training each year, while you ad-vance to Club President. Once you have served as Club President, then you will be eligible to serve on the District Cabinet if asked by the District Governor. Only Zone Chairs, Cabinet Secre-tary, and Cabinet Treasurer are eligible to advance to run for Second Vice District Gov-ernor; only 2VDG can run for First Vice District Governor; only 1VDG can run for Dis-trict Governor. All along the way Lions Clubs Interna-tional is providing training for

On May 17, 2014, Can Do Canines celebrated their 25 year anni-versary and thanked all those who helped raise the 4.4 million dol-lars for their capital campaign to purchase and remodel their new building and build new kennels. They unveiled the new wall plaque with the names of the individuals, corporate donors, and Lions Clubs that donated toward the campaign. Then 17 cli-ent/dog teams gradu-

ated, and each dog received a Nylabone and a mortar board cap. The Rock Creek Lions donated money in order to name one of the puppies that graduated.

Another Lions year is coming to an end. It has been a pleasure to work on the District Cabinet with District Governor Donna Mae. Her passion for membership

shows as District 5M8 is in the positive. I would like to thank her for all the miles she has put on to visit the clubs and spread the wonderful things that are

happening in the Lions Organization.

I also am honored to continue my work on the Newsletter and Publicity on next years District Cabinet and to work with DGE Duane Finger in the coming year. So please keep in the information coming so that I am share it and encourage

NEWS RELEASE IN THE LOCAL PINE COUNTY PAPERS: The nine Pine County Lions Clubs are combining resources to benefit Pine County residents from North to South on Friday May, 30 and Saturday May 31st 2014. The “Joint Zone Project” will focus on three activities designed to serve residents and visitors to Pine County.

On Friday May, 30th Lions will gather at Robinson Park to place 300 new shrubs as part of an erosion prevention effort. The Munger Trail in Sturgeon Lake is the site of a brush and trial clearing project scheduled for Saturday morning, May 31st. On that same day Lions will gather at the Hinckley Community Center to package meals for distribution to Pine County Food Shelves.

The Lions motto is “We Serve.” The nine Lions Clubs in Pine County have chosen to cooperate to raise funds and manpower to support projects that, by themselves, may be bigger than any one club can accomplish. This is the first of what the Pine County Lions hope will be a continuing effort in the County.

Eight-seven Lions have volunteered three hours for a total of two hundred sixty one Lion hours. Each club contributed $200 for the food packaging. Thrivent has awarded a grant of $350. The food is purchased from Outreach, Inc. headquartered in Iowa. Steve Cherne, the local Outreach coordinator, is supplying 1,000 meals plus his time to coordinate and help run the event. This effort will produce approximately 9,600 meals for distribution to local food shelves.

Outreach Inc. is the brainchild of a pair of Iowa farmers who on a trip to Africa saw the starvation there and decided to do some-thing about it. They devised a cheap nutritional meal of rice and vegetables with a vitamin and mineral packet that provides es-sential nutrients for growing children. Later they developed a rice and bean meal for distribution in Latin America and lastly a macaroni and cheese meal for American children. The macaroni and cheese meal has 500 times the nutrition of commercial macaroni and cheese.

The Sturgeon Lake Munger Trail project will result in improvements to an access corridor from the community. The Robinson Park planting will replace plants that were vandalized last year. Lion Gordy Jacobson is coordinating the Sturgeon Lake project, Lion Frank Loken organized and directs the Food Packaging project and Lion Sandy Sandwick is organizing the Robinson Park activity.

There are nine Lions Clubs serving and located in the following communities in Pine County; Rock Creek, Pine Area, Pine City, Hinckley, Sandstone, Sandstone Quarry, Finlayson, Askov and Sturgeon Lake.

SECOND NEWSL RELEASE TO THE LOCAL PAPERS:

All nine Lions Clubs in Pine County participated in two projects that benefit citizens and visitors to our county. On Friday, May 30th twenty one Lions gathered at Robinson Park in Sandstone to plant a perennial ground cover at the riverside.

Rain on Saturday, May 31st prevented completion of a project at Sturgeon Lake to extend a city park trail to meet with the Munger Bike trail. That project will be re scheduled. Meanwhile 53 lions gathered in the Hinckley Community Center to package 10,182 meals that have been distributed to Pine County food shelves.

The weekend event which featured cooperation among all of the Lions Clubs in one zone, drew the attention of Lions Clubs Inter-national and a television crew was sent from Chicago to record the events. Lions Clubs International has an electronic magazine available on the website. Search for LION MAGAZINE. Images of the activities in Sandstone and Hinckley may appear there in future issues. It is also possible that some of the video may appear at the United Nations on the next Lions Day at The UN.
