f you haven’t stepped aboard a new Hatteras motoryacht or sport-

fishing convertible in the past few years, you have missed a shift in

processes and materials that has produced significant improvements

in the finish of these fine yachts. Thanks to refinements in exterior paint

application and improved processes for interior appointments, Hatteras

offers an end product that is as beautiful as she is rugged.

Why is it that no one would even considerpurchasing a car without a rich coat of

protective paint covering its exposed surfaces, and yet that very practice is accepted with nonchalance in most of the boatbuildingworld? The answer is as unacceptable as it is ineffectual: “Because that’s the way it’s always been done.”

That answer isn’t good enough at Hatteras.Only Hatteras invests in its boats — and itsowners — by painting every exterior fiberglasssurface with a polyurethane finish. This processproduces a hardened outer surface that featuresseveral advantages over the exposed, porous gel-coat that other manufacturers cite as “finished.”

Because the painted finish is more resistantto harmful UV rays, its deep luster lasts signifi-cantly longer and requires less waxing over thelife of the boat. And should an incident occurthat requires maintenance of the hull, thepainted surface proves much easier to matchthan yellowed, oxidized gelcoat.

Below the Waterline: Hatteras uses both avinylester gelcoat and vinylester resin in the skincoat below the waterline. This process providesadditional blister resistance and reduced waterintrusion. The boat bottom is washed and prepared, and the first coat of Quik-Grip urethane paint is applied for its adhesion properties. Then two coats of Hull-Gard epoxywater-barrier paint go on, followed by twocoats of Awlstar. This final Awlstar applicationis a copper-based, ablative anti-fouling paintthat by design wears away with age. As inactivecomponents slough off, they reveal a fresh coat of anti-fouling agents..

Above the Waterline: All surfaces abovethe waterline receive a coat of blue dye to ensurethat the entire surface is sanded properly. Afterthe sanding is complete, the boat is paintedwith three coats of an epoxy primer. The boatis then coated with blue dye marker again, thenresanded, and then three coats of Awlcraft2000 topcoat are applied. After inspecting for and repairing defects, the boat is ready for a final application of three coats of Awlcraft 2000.

Improved Facilities: In 2002,Hatteras completed a new paintbooth that features the lateststate-of-the-art air handling systems, temperature controlsand lighting to create the ultimate painting environment.New high-volume, low-pressure spray guns provide a finer mistof spray for even application.

Gloss Versus Time: With proper care using a polymer sealer

every four to six months, the Hatteras surface will hold its

gloss for years of use. Exposed gelcoat, as used by the compe-

tition, lacks the reflectivity of paint and requires more upkeep.

Nonskid Surfaces: The maintenance advantages of

Hatteras’ processes are evident in other areas of the boat as

well. Hatteras coats all walkways and decks with a nonskid

finish utilizing polymeric beads. While the beads obviously

improve footing, they also remain white and do not blacken

with wear. Hatteras also paints all engine rooms and bilge

areas with a white polyurethane paint to produce a smooth

finish that is easy to clean.

Already known for its robust constructionand attention to detail, Hatteras continues

to push improvements in its interior fit and finish through enhanced customer interaction, improved processes and quality components.

Customers receive the undivided attentionof an in-house design team with a fully stockedsuite of samples on hand to help create a customized yacht décor. Only the highest-quality components are used throughout theinterior design, from the hardware to thefaucets to the solid-surface countertops to the genuine wood veneer flush-filled panels.

Flush-Filled Panels: Hatteras utilizes flush-filledpanels in its interiors. These panels havenumerous advantages over less sophisticatedmaterials. All grain in the new finish is filled for amirror-like luster, giving a clearer, more uniformgloss that presents the natural color and beautyof the wood. The hardened surface is durable, resistant to scratches, and easier to care for.

Genuine Wood Veneers:Most Hatteras models featureAmerican black cherryavailable in either ahigh-gloss or satin polyester finish asstandard. Maple,African mahogany andother custom woods are available asoptions. While Hatteras uses only gen-uine wood veneers, many competitors top theircabinetry with faux teak reconstituted wood.

Head Design: Hatteras utilizes color-coordinated Avonite solid-surface and stonecountertops with integrated sinks and11/2-inch bullnose edges in galleys andheads. Both feature side splashes and backsplashes to contain water. The vanity head cabinets are built with stylish bowed fronts(where possible), and the cabinet bases arefinished wood with flush doors. All showerdoors have wood trim to protect wall coverings, and yachts 80 feet and above feature granite countertops and flooring.

Quality Fixtures: Hatterasinstalls high-quality galley and head fixtures such asHansgrohe, Franke andDornbracht. Standard cabinetand head hardware includesrecognized names such as Jado,Colonial Bronze, Rohl, Gingerand Sugatsune.

Fluted Wood Cornices: To achieve an open feel in the salon, fab-

ric lambrequins and cornices have been replaced in most models by

solid-stock fluted wood cornices and window-conforming moldings,

most of which house 1- and 2-inch wood blinds. Silhouette blinds with

fixed Roman shades are standard on motoryachts over 80 feet in length.

Staying Cool: In most models, air

conditioning is vented through flut-

ed cornices or over soffits to spread

air evenly throughout the boat. This approach eliminates cold spots that

occur when air is forced directly into one area through overhead vents.

Architectural Details:Larger convertibles andmotoryachts feature interior designs rich indetail, including sketch-face doors, veneeredcolumns, arched doorwaysand bullnose moldings.

Storage Advantage: In the bow stateroomof most convertibles, built-in cabinets extendalong the hull side from the hanging locker forward to the rope locker. To increase capacity, all king- and queen-size berths that do nothouse tanks conceal cedar-lined storage compartments beneath the berth’s hinged,pneumatic-assisted lid. Hatteras providesstorage behind mirrored doors in heads, andthe forward fascia of most galleys features several deep drawers for stores.

In-House Décor Team:Hatteras employs interior design professionals to assistyou in customizing your interi-or, with a full suite of samplesand patterns available for reviewwithin the New Bern facility.Upholstery professionals createmost soft goods in-house,including draperies, comforters, quilting, exterior cushions andcovers, throw pillows and more.

Dovetail Drawers:On the newest Hatterasproducts, all cabinetdrawers are built using a dovetail joinery technique, replicating a quality touch usuallyreserved for fine furniture. Cabinets aredesigned with 3-D CAD software and con-structed using lightweight cores where possibleto save weight. The backsides of all interiorwood placed against the hull side is sealed priorto installation to prevent moisture absorption.

Whisperwall Headliners: Headliners aboardall Hatteras models are created using removableWhisperwall panels, enabling repairs to bemade to one section of the headliner withouthaving to replace the entire unit. Whisperwallpanels also eliminate unsightly seam-concealingstrips needed when installing traditional headliner material.

UV curing: A recentinvestment in a UV curingbooth allows craftsmen to cure the polyurethanefinish on interior woodparts under ultravioletlight within a sterile environment. The processvirtually eliminates thetiny debris inherent in less sophisticated finishing processes.

Berths: Hatteras sleeping berths typically measure 80 inches long throughout the boat.

Hatteras provides quality HMC coil-spring mattresses, secured by professionally upholstered

keepers as an option on small vessels and as standard above 80 feet. Many competitors do not

offer HMC mattresses and use only Velcro strips as keepers.
