Ten Years On! A Big Thank You and a small request
Ten years ago, on Monday 16th July 2007, I was
licensed at Hatherleigh Parish Church as Priest-
in-Charge of Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne and
Jacobstowe. With the addition of Northlew to our
group at the beginning of 2010, and then joining
together with the eight parishes of the Northmoor
Team, I now glory in the snappy title of ‘Team
Vicar in the Northmoor Team Ministry with
special responsibility for the parishes of
Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne, Jacobstowe and
Northlew’
As we celebrate 10 years here, I just wanted to
say a BIG THANK YOU to you all for your
welcome, friendship, and understanding, as I
have learnt the ropes, both as a vicar and a
mother (with more still to learn). It has been a
lovely place to start a family, and Brendan and
Krysty have benefitted from being involved with
all sorts of happenings across the parishes. It is a
privilege to serve as a church minister in such a
beautiful place with such welcoming
people, and I am grateful to you all for
what you reveal to us of God’s love and
generosity.
Every two years, parish clergy in the
Diocese undergo a review of their ministry
and look at things they might do to grow
and develop. At my last review with Bishop
Nick McKinnel at the beginning of March,
we identified that, after 10 years, my office
and filing system is no longer fit for
purpose, and that having time to properly
redo the filing system and sort it out would
help me to work more effectively in the
future (and reduce my stress levels). He
therefore asked me to block out two weeks
without parish or service commitments to
‘mine deep’ in my office. I will be doing
this from Monday 17th July until Sunday
30th July (although I will appear at some
school leavers’ services and a couple of
special services during this time).
Therefore, my small request is that you
should only contact me during this time if
there is anything urgent. Please note that I
will not be regularly checking my email
during this time, but will check the
answerphone.
Thank you for all your kindness and
support!
Rev. Ruth Hansford (and Paul, Brendan,
Krysty, and the dogs: Flynn, Swallow, and
Eby; and the cats: Smokey and Bandit.)
June 2017 Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne, Jacobstowe, Northlew and Monkokehampton 5
Dear Friends,
One of the first things that Nigel and I did when we came to Hatherleigh nearly 5 years
ago, was to walk up to the Square one evening early in August and sit on the wall to
listen to the Silver Band. As we walked home we agreed that we had come to live in a
lovely place.
Hatherleigh has those wonderful occasions throughout the year when the town can
come together (with much voluntary hard work behind the scenes) and enjoy itself in
many ways. We have loved the glorious foolishness of the Walruses. We have loved
the yearly Pantomime, with familiar faces taking on heroic or villainous character. We
have loved the Festival, and the flaming torches of the Carnival, with the gathering of
the town the next day for the Remembrance Parade. These and many other events are
the essence of what makes Hatherleigh such a good place to live or grow up in. The
effort, the talent and the appreciation of your fellow townsfolk bring the community
together and hold it together. Long may all these things continue.
But they must continue without us! We are moving on, in the way that Methodist
Ministers do. On to Malvern in Worcestershire, a very different town which will have a
character all of its own to discover. Oh, but we will miss you all in Hatherleigh! I am
sorry that I never got to a Hatheleigh Football Club match (you’ve been my fantasy
Football team name for years!), or a Cricket match or a Bowls match. I’ve loved all the
local choirs. I will particularly miss the Gospel Choir and all of you who are part of it. I
will miss all the opportunities that Hatherleigh has to play, or do, or sing, or decorate a
float etc.
What I will, perhaps, miss the most is Christmas Eve in that same Square with the same
(award-winning) Silver band singing Christmas carols and giving thanks to God that He
sent Jesus to be born into our world to love us and to show how much He loves us. In
the open air, in the darkness of December with the children running around and mince
pies with clotted cream, all this is precious.
As so often when I’ve led the prayers while leading worship in Church or Chapel my
prayer for Hatherleigh is that the love of God will always be at the heart of all that goes
on here, and in the hearts of all who live or work here. So that this place may be blessed
and may come to understand what it is to be a part of God’s Kingdom. Amen
Yours with love, Sylvia C-W.

HATHERLEIGH
TOWN COUNCIL
Notes from last meeting
June 13th 2017
Next meeting July 11th
For more information see our website
www.hatherleightowncouncil.org/ Your 9 Councillors are Clare Tyson (Chair/Mayor),
Rachel Laycock (Deputy), Ian Trenaman, Deb Laing-
Trengove, Claire Gladstone, Peter Back, Keith King-
stone, Ben Bailey, Andrea Kimber.
This month we welcomed Cathy Aubertin from West
Devon Borough Council to discuss possible lease and
purchase options for the car park. Resident parking
permits were also considered. Costs were more than
anticipated and we are looking into our options and
gathering further information.
Following our working group meeting we have com-
piled a list of requests from community feedback on
suggestions/demands to relieve the towns parking
problems (see copy on website). The map which
Devon Highways asked us to create will now be re-
turned for their review. To repeat from previous notes
- we are dependent on DCC and WDBC for any
changes to the current parking situation being imple-
mented.
The repair to the Millennium Plaque on the wall at
Millennium Corner has finally being worked out and
the cost agreed. The work will be carried out by the
original ceramic artist John Roberts.
Following the refurbishment of the town’s toilets it
was reported that they have also received a complete
cleansing makeover and are looking in great condition.
Also reported was news that the Hatherleigh Festival
preparations are going well and the programme will
be in print soon. The Council agreed to donate £100 in
response to a sponsorship request.
District Councillor Kimber’s report included news that
the Business Information point BIP in Okehampton
has extra funding to distribute for small businesses.
Maintenance issues reported were: overhanging
hedge at the electricity station; road sign at Victoria
road damaged; style on footpath needs attention; Jubi-
lee footpath grass still to be cleared; the road signs
have been cleaned this time by Cllr. Back.
Can we remind people to once again please adopt a
hanging basket to water over the summer months.
Thank you to those who have already started.
Rubbish left on streets: we have all noticed the black
bags of discarded rubbish in numerous places left on
the streets creating an eyesore and health hazard.
PLEASE can people check their assigned waste collec-
tion weeks. If for whatever reason your rubbish fails to
be collected don’t leave it out for another 2 weeks.
Ring and report it to WDBC!
The cans and food tins recycle bank has been removed
by WDBC and is unlikely to return due to lack of use
making it financially unviable. Some people are con-
tinuing to leave bags of cans, these will be added to
litter bin refuse and end up in landfill so please use your
green recycle box for cans/tins.
Hatherleigh’s 1st Weed Pull Day!
Following the appeal last month to ‘Keep Hatherleigh
Tidy’ we are aware that some areas of town have im-
proved and we thank those people who help.
Weed killing is a problem because of reductions in
council budgets and the growing concern of using toxic
chemicals in public places. Weeds continue to remain a
problem and spurred by a newcomer to town offering
his services we thought we’d give this a try - let’s team
up to look after our streets and get together for a weed
pulling session. Bring a bucket, a pair of gloves and
trowel. We welcome all support! Meet at the defibril-
lator on the Coop wall weds 19th July at 7pm. Tarka Trail: Are people aware that there is an online
petition to Devon County Council asking for the miss-
ing link of the off-road section of the Tarka Trail to be
connected between Meeth and Hatherleigh. Currently
cyclists have to encounter a dangerous section of road
as they approach Hatherleigh. If you would like to add
your name to the petition search online Tarka Trail
petition.
Finally, although the Mayor urged everyone to shop in
the Coop store last Pump, what was meant was to
choose the Hatherleigh store over other supermarkets.
Of course first and foremost buy your products from
our local independent family businesses! Shop local,
think global!
Space is short here. A full account of the meetings are
available in the minutes, these are available on the
notice board at Millennium Square or on the Town
Council website at www.hatherleightowncouncil.org/

Recording Studio Opens Musicians, singers, film-makers, writers!
My new purpose-built, boutique recording
studio is now open (writes Geoff Hodgkin-
son). It’s part of my “creative hub” project
and it’s designed to suit all kinds of re-
cording, from voice-overs to solo singers to
bands of up to 10 musicians. I’ve installed
state-of-the-art, multi-track recording equip-
ment with lots of clever additions so there’s
plenty of scope to be creative. I’m keen to
encourage new talent and there will be spe-
cial rates for that. As an opening offer,
original songs will be recorded free of
charge. We also offer broadcast-quality
video services (we’ve just done a 5-camera

song we can help. Contact

Rogus nr Wellington. A morning visit here
(we plan to arrive about 11 am) will be
followed by a visit to Dayspring Plants, a
nursery specialising in herbaceous perennials,
normally only wholesale but allowing our
group visit. This is on the way home, near
Exeter airport.
As this is a self-drive venture, the cost will be
minimal - £5 for Holcombe Court, which
goes to the church and, may I suggest, a
petrol contribution to your driver. A fee for
Dayspring Plants will be met by the Club.
There is, of course, the option, for those who
may not be interested in the nursery, of just
doing the morning - please make sure that
everyone in your car is of the same mind!!
And just to say, should you need reminding,
that the Flower Show this year is on
Saturday, August 19th and we hope to have
schedules out by the end of the month.

above or general club activities, do contact

Could you be a Rural
Champion? Do you have a passion for your parish?
Our aim is to build stronger communities and
reduce social isolation in rural areas which
may otherwise be “hard to reach”.
With this in mind, a Rural Champion is
an individual volunteer who is active in the
heart of their own community to raise

those of the Transitions Project, and also
local volunteering opportunities.
This is a flexible, enjoyable and rewarding
role for those aged 18 and over, with a
monthly commitment of about 2 hours and
with any out of pocket expenses reimbursed.
No DBS check is necessary.
If you are:
outgoing, empathetic and enthusiastic about
your own local area

And are willing to:
research any services and opportunities not
previously known about “signpost” and pass
on information to those in the area

ordinator at West Devon CVS

Hatherleigh History Society At the meeting held on the 12th June we were
pleased to welcome Mike Paddock from
Highampton to tell us about his work with his
Heavy Horses on their farm. All the work on
the farm is undertaken by Mike`s many heavy
horses and much of the farm machinery is as
used by the Amish sect, meaning that their
farm is very environmentally friendly. Mike
served his apprenticeship on Prince Charles`s
estate at Highgrove and still undertakes work
for him.
The next meeting will be on the 10th July
when the very popular speaker, Simon Dell,
will be with us to talk about `Beatrice Chase a
Dartmoor Author`. All meetings are held in
Old Schools and start at 7.30pm, guests and
visitors welcome (£2)

Hatherleigh Church Bell
Ringers I would like to start by giving advanced notice of
the church bells being rung in August. On
Tuesday
the 1st of August we have a visiting band of
ringers who are going to attempt to ring a full
peal . This will consist of over 5000 changes and
will take a little over 3 hours, starting at 10.30am.
Then on the 5th of August, another visiting band
of ringers, are going to attempt a 1/4 peal. This
will begin at midday and should be over by
1.15pm.
Since my last report I am pleased to say we have
had some new faces in the tower. This is great
and our new learners are doing very well, but
there is always room for more! To try to
encourage more of you to give ringing ago we
asked our youngest ringer Will, who is 11, to
write a short piece for the pump. This is what he
wrote:-
“Hello! I was 9 when I started bell ringing , I
decided to start when I went to a bell ringing
practice in Dorset with a family friend.
I am now 11 and have learnt how to ring bell
number two , which is one of the lightest.! When
I first started I found catching the hand stroke the
most difficult , but now I can do almost all it!”

Murder on Air Hatherleigh Players Present 'Murder on
Air' as a fringe event for the Hatherleigh
Festival.
This murder mystery play will be performed
on Wednesday 19th July at 7.30pm and
Sunday 23rd July at 4:00pm at Hatherleigh
Community Centre.
Its September 1957 and a cast of a long
running radio play Major Siddlington’s Ride
Out are preparing to record their final episode.
A select audience has been invited (that means
you!) to witness this historic event and meet
the cast and crew. However tensions are
running high and the cast and crew prove to be

May - Monthly Weather
Report Rainfall:–May2017-45.30mm/1.78ins.(May2016-44.10mm/1.74ins.)
May proved to be another dry month, with
rainfall 30% less than the average that might
have been expected for this area. Twenty days
in the month saw no rain with four others
having just a trace. Many days in the month
were sunny and warm, especially over the last
week with Wednesday 24th being the hottest
day. A thunderstorm occurred overnight on
Friday 26th, with heavy rain and a spectacular
show of ‘sheet’ lightning. Over this period the
cuckoo made a late visit to the Moor and was
heard calling gaily on the 25th / 26th / and 27th.
My thanks go out to the six residents who got
in touch to inform me of this very good news.
A call I am pleased to say, that I was fortunate
to enjoy as well.

Hatherleigh Carnival News The Carnival Committee would like to
thank everyone who came along and sup-
ported the “Hatherleigh Does Haven” eve-
ning, everyone seemed to get into the holi-
day spirit and had a great time. There are so
many people we would like to thank for
their part in making the evening such a suc-
cess, and huge thanks indeed to Mr Robin
Wonnacott who made such a genial and
thoroughly comical host who kept the eve-
ning running so brilliantly. Thank you so
much to Jess Squire (aka Jazzy J) who kept
us all moving and grooving with her party
dances which were lots of fun, and also or-
ganised and judged the dance competition.
Thanks to Ian King for kindly loaning us his
disco and thanks to Roy and Ian for being
our fab DJ’s for the evening. The bingo
was great fun, thank you to Mr Vallance for
loaning his machine and to Katie Bennett
for making such a brilliant bingo caller,
thanks also to The Tally HO!, The George
Hotel, The Paper Shop, The Chip Shop and
Co-op for donating some lovely prizes.
Thanks to Helen Reddaway for putting to-
gether some fun quizzes – sounds like an
oxymoron but they really were enjoyable (I
still can’t get the link in the picture round
though?!). The glamorous and entertaining
“Moonlight Melodies” sounded as lovely as
they looked, thank you so much Eliza
Squire and Christy Rice we all loved your
cabaret. The M&S Magic show didn’t stop
amazing and astounding the children, and
adults, all night with their fantastic tricks.
Our President was officially introduced and
his first duty was give the sash to this year’s
Carnival Prince Master Harry Winearls and
Princess Miss Zoe Wonnacott. Our little
royal pair are both 4 and have been the best
of friends since they were born, they will be
starting school together at Hatherleigh in
September. Harry’s mum Sophie and Zoe’s
mum Nat were on a number of floats to-
gether from about the age of 5 and they too
have been friends forever. Zoe’s parents
Mark and Nat were Prince and Princess
together many years ago, so who knows
where this will lead! Zoe has been on the
family float every year since she was a baby
but this will be the first time on a float for
Harry who has only taken part in last year’s
afternoon procession and he is already look-
ing forward to it. We wish them well with
all their float making and look forward to
seeing the finished float on Carnival day.
Unfortunately, our Queen Miss Annie
Strawbridge was attending a Duke of Edin-
burgh Awards event on that night so she
will receive her sash from last year’s Queen
Miss Elizabeth Hutton at the Carnvial Disco
on July 14th in the market so please come
along. Entrance is £6, it’s for 16 and over
(ID must be provided) music is by the popu-
lar BK Discos, there will be a bar and a bar-
becue. We are limited to 400 at the disco,
June 2017 Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne, Jacobstowe, Northlew and Monkokehampton 19
so please come along early to avoid the dis-
appointment of being turned away- some-
thing we hate doing but insurance, health
and safety regulations are so strict.
Now on to our Vintage Rally on Saturday
August 5th which is looking set to be a bril-
liant day. Gates will open at 11am and we
already have a number of vintage cars, bikes,
tractors and stationary engines, but there will
also be fairground rides, bouncy castle, bar-
becue, bar, tea tent, entertainment, stalls both
vintage and modern and there will also be
autojumble– additionally we will have our
new range of carnival merchandising which
unfortunately was not at the Haven night as
most of it was lost in some warehouse never
to be seen again! So replacements have now
been sent and we hope you like it all. Stalls
cost £10 and if you are interested in having
one please call Dawn on 810265. We would
like to print a little programme for the day,
and I know Linda will soon be around asking
if you would like to advertise in the lovely
main carnival programme, but if you feel
you would like to advertise in the vintage
rally one as well for £10 please call me on
811255, thank you. At 3.30pm we hope that
all the exhibitors with roadworthy vehicles
will take part in a parade which will follow
the carnival route, so please can we ask that
everyone parks with consideration on that
day and does not park both sides of the
streets to allow a clear thoroughfare. At the
time of going to press (as contracts have not
been signed) I cannot give the very exciting
details of the band we have booked to play
in the evening all I can say is PLEASE
keep your eye out for posters, press re-
leases and our facebook page as we
think people are going to love them!

Team Barnardo’s London
Marathon 2017 For the last 18 months I have been
pounding the local roads training to run
the Virgin London Marathon. During
this 18 months I have run four competi-
tive half marathons and the full mara-
thon in London, along with what feels
like endless training miles. In these races
I have achieved four personal best times,
including a personal best marathon time
of 4:39, beating my previous best mara-
thon time by 1 hour and 18 minutes.
However the most important statistic is
the £2260 that was raised for Barnardo's.
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank all of my friends, family and
strangers who supported, helped and
donated along the way. To all of you,
THANKYOU.

The Best Job In The
World? You may be thinking about working for
yourself, in which case here is an opportu-
nity for you to consider.
Very regrettably, I am having to give up the
wonderful job of the “Hatherleigh Milk
Lady”. I really want this business to remain
alive and kicking, serving Hatherleigh,
Northlew, Meeth and Jacobstowe.
If you can get up early in the morning, are
relatively fit, can cope with the occasional
rather wet day, and revel in the glorious dry
days, this job could be for you.
This is so much more than a doorstep deliv-
ery service. You will meet and get to know
the wonderful people, who are existing cus-
tomers and I am sure you will add to the
current list.
Basically, it is my idea of the very best job
in the world, for so many reasons. If you
are interested in taking this over, please call
me on 07975 846930 and I will give you
more details.

HATHERLEIGH COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL Tel: 01837 810248 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hatherleigh-pri.devon.sch.uk
Hatherleigh School are delighted with the outcome of their recent OFSTED visit. The school is judged to be good and safeguarding is effective. The Inspector commented upon how the children clearly enjoy coming to school and feel happy and safe while they are learning. He also praised the school for 'effective teamwork at the heart of the school's approach'. However we are not compla-cent and continue to look for ways to move the school forward and to improve opportunities and outcomes for all our children. This is not always very easy in a climate of constant and rapid change with tightening budgets and increasing demands. However we are very lucky at Hatherleigh to have a dedicated team of governors and staff determined to keep the welfare and education of the children in our community our priority and to resist unnecessary change. I would like to take this opportunity to thank, once again, the community who support and enrich the life of the school in so many ways. CO-OP Points Thank you once again to the CO-OP members who donated their points to the School's PTFA. It was an amazing bonus for the school funds and it will help to broaden the curriculum and provide learning resources for the children. Summer Fair Our Summer Fair will be taking place on Saturday 15th July at the school. This is an occasion when we welcome the whole community to come and visit! More information can be found on posters which will soon be appearing around the town.

Can You Help Syrian
Refugees? When we first asked this question at the
public meeting held at Tavistock Community
College in February 2017, (writes Angus
Doulton, Chair of West Devon Safe
Haven) the immediate result was to form the
group which is now called West Devon Safe
Haven. The group is working towards helping
a small number of refugee families to settle in
West Devon and become members of our
community. This is all part of
the Government’s Syrian Vulnerable Persons
Resettlement Scheme. This scheme supports
and funds a small number of refugees who are
considered most vulnerable to move directly
to the UK, from UNHCR camps in Lebanon
and Turkey. West Devon Safe Haven is
working with West Devon Borough Council
to find suitable accommodation and then to
help the families settle into their new home
and so make their first months in West Devon
as easy and welcoming as possible – not
forgetting that most of our new families will
have been through the horrifying experiences
that we have all seen in the media. Two
families will arrive in West Devon over the
next two months, and a few more in the
following months. We recognise that we can't
affect the overall crisis, but we can at least
offer a place of safety and new hope to a few
families who have neither. Our aim is to
support the families to be become independent
members of our community. Central
Government provides much of the basic
requirements for these new families when
they arrive and we hope to provide some of
the other things that are required to help their
move as successful as possible and which may
help make a new start less of a trauma,
perhaps a television, children's bikes, toys,
and toiletries. We will subsequently support
the families with learning English,
understanding our culture and community and
helping to resolve the practical problems
arising from moving to a totally new
environment with only the clothes they stand
up in. The aim is to support these refugees to
become independent members of our
community during their 5 year stay in the UK.
Our new families may arrive with next to
nothing and we can’t guess what they will
need before they arrive and so we have
established a “Welcome Fund” to help
provide the things they might need. West
Devon Safe Haven is in the process of
becoming formally registered as a charity. If
you would like to support West Devon Safe
Haven or ask for one of our pledge forms,
please contact [email protected] or
phone 01822 841498

Step Back in Time is a bit like a time machine. Step through the
entrance and be transported back through
recent history, all the way to the dark ages. A
fun weekend for all the family. Thanks to the
many exhibitors who attend this event each
year, we cover a wide range of significant
periods in history. Each period is represented
either by living history exhibits, where re-
enactors live the way they would have done at
a particular point in time, or, in the case of
more recent history, exhibits such as tools and
vehicles, even domestic equipment, represent
their unique point in time. Some of the history
goes so far back in time, that we are still
digging it up! We are delighted to be joined
by ACE Archaeology Club, of Winkleigh,
who are undertaking an archaeological dig at
our Moistown site, which you can see in
action at the festival. The Step Back in Time
Festival, held at Broadwoodkelly, near
Winkleigh, is set by the remains of a medieval
manor house, within an ancient landscape. It
brings together Re-enactment groups from
throughout the ages. From Dumnonika, who
represent the life of a Briton in the Iron Age,
when the Romans had forts within easy
contact, to the Vikings who raided and settled
the region from about 790 until the Norman

conquest of 1066. The Oathsworn
Warband , amongst others, will represent
these times, and their descendants. Kernow
Levy, and similar groups, will help you to
discover what it was like to live in the
medieval times. From Knight to a member
of the peasantry, by the King's decree, all
had to train in the arts of war as part of their
Hundred. Thanks to Hazelgrove Archery,
this year will also see demonstrations of the
Arts of the projectile weapon. Inspired by
the local histories, all these groups will
show you live demonstrations of the
fighting arts and styles of their times.
Because life was not all warfare, there is a
living history encampment, with
demonstrations of the crafts of living, and
examples of contemporary music performed
by members of The Harpies of Havoc. Who
knows who, (and what time they came
from), you will bump into as you Step Back

Help with Heat? Homeowners in West Devon who need
to replace a broken or inefficient boiler,
or install central heating, may be
eligible for assistance through funds
from their council.
The councils are working in partnership
with not-for-profit organisation Wessex
Resolutions delivering fixed rate loans for
home improvements.
The average lifespan of a boiler is 10-15
years and the Energy Saving Trust
estimates that if you replace an old G-
rated boiler with a modern A-rated boiler
with a full set of heating controls, you
could save around £340 a year on your
gas bill. However, loans can also support
people who are not connected to gas and
who need to replace or install oil central
heating or electric heating systems.
Loan funds are recycled for the benefit of
the community. Each time a repayment is
made the money goes back into the
original lending pot and is then available
to help more people across the district.
Emma Lower of Wessex Resolutions said
"Being able to help the local people to keep
their families warm and healthy means a
huge amount to us and we are so pleased that
the local council can offer this money
because the need is unquestionably there".

Concert held in the Church in June, was very much
enjoyed by all. It was a truly special time of
thanksgiving and celebration for the comple-
tion of all the work carried out on the Church
over the past eighteen months and more. The
Rev. Ruth expressed our thanks and gratitude
to Miss Jenny Green, our fabric co-ordinator
for all her hard work in bringing this project to
completion. Jenny was presented with a bou-
quet of flowers, chocolates and a voucher for a
special Pamper Spa Break.
Refreshments were then served and there was
time to mingle and chat. Sincere thanks to all
who helped in any way to make this concert a
success.

St Michael & All Angels is a beautiful Grade
II* listed church with a number of special
features and monuments. Masonry work to
the tower was urgent as water ingress was
damaging the structure and the stones were
much worse towards the top requiring extra
stonework. When the vestry floor was dug for
pipework a large void was discovered under-
neath requiring a new limecrete floor. The
17th century tiles at the base of the tower have
been carefully restored and relaid. New facili-
ties have been installed which will enable the
church to hold more activities to engage with
the local community. The very bumpy
churchyard path has been replaced and access
is now much easier.
Recent archaeological finds revealed evidence
of an earlier church on the site with an early
medieval feature and three medieval graves.
It is important that the church and its heritage
are safeguarded for future generations.
Our architect, Mr Simon Cartlidge, won an
award in 2015 from the Diocesan Advisory
Committee for the Care of Churches for the
Church of St Michael and All Angels for ‘A
comprehensively researched submission re-
garding the treatment of fabric in an attempt
to solve a centuries-old problem’. He has
been enormously supportive throughout this
project.
Revd Dr Ruth Hansford said, “It is a huge
achievement for a small village church to have
undertaken and completed such a large pro-
ject. It would not have been possible without
so much help and support from grant-giving
Church Fete The fete this year will be held on the 29th
July at 2 p.m. in Friars Hele Farm Gardens by
kind invitation of Mrs. Kim Boeijink. We

It will be a traditional Church Fete with all
the usual stalls, plus an excellent Draw and
an extra special High Tea. We look forward
to welcoming you!
John Dennis It was with great sadness that we heard of the
passing of our very dear friend and Bell Cap-
tain. John farmed at Park Farm, Meeth, for
many years before retiring and moving to
Hatherleigh last year. He was a much loved
member of our community, a true gentleman
and friend to all. John was a much respected
Bell Captain and spent many hours encourag-
ing others to take up the art of bell ringing.
He will be sadly missed! Rest in peace dear
John!
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family
and friends at this time.

Heritage Lottery Fund awarded an amaz-
ing £156,400 towards the project, which
could not have been completed without this
grant. The National Churches Trust and
Devon Historic Churches Trust came to
the rescue with extra funds for the addi-

The latest meeting was held on Thursday
June 1 in the village hall. The speaker was
Sally Mackay from the Devon and Somer-
set Fire and Rescue Service. She gave a
very interesting and informative talk on the
work of the fire service and gave many
hints on fire safety in the home. Also,
Home Fire Safety Checks are available free
to the over 55's.
After refreshments the business was dealt
with. Mary Daniel is to organise the skittles
team, with the help of Ann Langworthy, for
the next season. A meeting is to be held in
the village hall on Thursday June 15 to
form a sub-committee to put together the
speakers for next year.
Members discussed the two Resolutions
which will be taken to the Annual Meeting at
Liverpool. It was decided that the representa-
tive uses her discretion on Alleviation of
Loneliness and 15 members were in favour
of voting for Plastic Soup. Order sheets were
available for calendars and diaries. Margaret
Cleveland has had a photograph printed on
the calendar.
It was decided to keep the lunches to bi-
monthly.

Exbourne Choir Concert Exbourne Choir performed their Summer
Concert in front of a full house at Charter
Hall, Okehampton on Saturday 17 June.
Pauline Savage has been working with the
choir for many months now ably assisted by
pianist/organist Christine Cleverdon.
The enthusiastic audience of 120 were enter-
tained with a wide range of music to suit all
tastes. The choir opened with “Hallelujah”
by Leonard Cohen followed by a Concert
medley of popular Lloyd Webber numbers.
A change of emphasis saw the choir perform
Bach’s “Air” perhaps better known to more
mature readers as the theme music for the
Hamlet cigar advertisement. Any concert
today is not complete without pieces from
John Rutter and the choir did not disappoint
with renditions of “Sally Gardens” featuring
soloist Maxwell Turner, “Bold Grenadier”
and an exciting performance of the famous
Northumbrian folk-song “The Keel Row”.

The first half of the concert ended with yet an-
other change of emphasis with the choir singing
two classic pieces from Joseph Haydn’s The
Creation – “Achieved is the Glorious Work”
followed by a stirring performance of “The
Heavens are Telling” featuring Manda King ,
Maxwell Turner & Tim Sutton-Coulson.
Following a break where drinks were served,
the choir opened the second half with the well-
known Gilbert & Sullivan number from the Pi-
rates of Penzance – “The Policemen’s Chorus”.
Yet another change of emphasis saw the choir
sing Queens most famous piece “Bohemian
Rhapsody”. More John Rutter followed with
“Afton Water” before the choir sang Mendels-
sohn’s “How Lovely are the Messengers” and
their moving rendition of Handel’s “Hallelujah
Chorus”. The evening rounded off with a fun
version of Frederick Loewe’s “Ascot Gavotte”
from My Fair Lady followed by “Sit Down
You’re Rocking the Boat” from Guys and Dolls.
As an encore the choir sang a moving version of
“You Raise me Up”
The evening was interspersed with Solos and
trio songs from various members of the choir
including Lara Walker, Judy Proctor, Emma
Evans, Ruth Penrose, Karen Pellow & Tim
Sutton-Coulson. The show was superbly
compered by Okehampton College student Ryan
Harrell.
The National Churches Trust were the charity
supported by the choir.
The Choir is always looking for new vocalists.

Patronal Service Another date to note down is Sunday 30th July
when we shall hold our United Patronal Service
at St. Mary's Church at 11 am, this is an impor-
tant Service in the life of the Church and this
year the format has changed, so do join us for a
lovely Service and stay for light refreshments at
the close. All very welcome.
Thank You The Cancer Research UK House to House col-
lection in Exbourne undertaken by Mary Daniel
and Dave Weeks raised £372.02 for the charity.
Grateful thanks are expressed to those who do-
nated.
Wild About Exbourne In 2012 the Devon Wildlife Trust, with others,
carried out a survey of the flora and fauna in
Exbourne. We are keen to add to this list so that
the records can be kept up to date. Monitoring
the biodiversity of an area can tell us about the
health (or otherwise) of the state of the wildlife
within the parish. We know many of you are
members of the DWT and the RSPB so will be
aware of the State of Nature Report 2016 which
indicates that many of our favourite species are
in decline.
We need your help. In Exbourne village hall
we have displayed some wildlife and environ-
mental information which we hope you will find
interesting. This will be changed from time to
time so there should always be something new
to read. There is a folder containing a form
which we would like you to fill in and return, if
possible on a monthly basis. We will then pass
the details to the DWT.
We are hoping you will record, not only the
birds that come into your garden, but also any
sightings of bumblebees, butterflies, snakes,
toads, frogs and newts, bats and owls.
Our hedgerows are home to a variety of flowers
as well as mammals and these too we would like
recorded. The micro library has some identifica-
tion reference books available so that, if, like us,
you are not brilliant at identifying them, help is
available.
Exbourne Village Hall Work on the Village Hall continues with elec-
trical work being carried out to meet current
regulations and to update the kitchen coin me-
ter to take the new £1 coins.
The following events are taking place in the
Hall in July:
Yoga on Friday mornings from 9.30 a.m. with
Kathy
Table Tennis is on Monday evenings from
6.30pm – contact Mark Tungate (851225) This
is a regular event that anyone can join in but
the Table Tennis equipment is available for
use at other times at a nominal charge of £1
per head and no charge for children. Contact
Sheila White (01837 851306).
The Community Fete will be held on Saturday
1st July in the Hall and, weather permitting, in
part of Duck Lane. This arrangement worked
very well last year as it created a lovely atmos-
phere and gave much more room for mingling
and chatting and enjoying the various stalls
etc.

Northlew fundraising Recently a large amount of money has been
raised for local good causes. In April the land-
lord of The Green Dragon, Dan Abscombe
organised a very successful Fun Day. This
with the evening of music and dancing, made
the terrific sum of £3,000. and has been do-
nated as follows: £2,000 for the Air Ambu-
lance night landing site, £700 for a much
needed freezer for the Community shop, and
£300 reserved to finance the 2018 Fun Day.
Then on May 7th Shaun Millership organised a
Vintage Tractor Run which was also very
popular, with over fifty tractors rolling into
Northlew Square on Sunday morning. Once
more the sun shone and everyone had a good
day. There was a wide range of ages among
the drivers--Ernie Stanbury, aged 89, being the
most senior and Beccy Dennis, aged 17 the
youngest. In excess of £1,500 was raised and
has been donated equally to the Parish Church,
where Shaun is a Churchwarden, and the Air
Ambulance site.
Dan and Shaun wish to thank everyone for all
the help given at these events--all the fetching
and carrying and setting up on the playing field
for the many Fun Day activities, all the food
cooked and served for the Tractor Run. They
were two memorable days and both will now
become annual events. Very many thanks to
Dan and Shaun, all the helpers and all who
contributed to such wonderful results. We look
forward to next time!

2000, when it was the Critic?s choice at the
Edinburgh Fringe festival and attracted multi-
ple 5-star reviews on a sell-out UK tour. Be-
neath the fancy clothes of the tale lies some-
thing more meaningful; human weaknesses are
satirised mercilessly; and a capacity for loving
is the highest value. There are larger-than-life
characters, lots and lots to join in with ? and an
ending that will leave you helpless with laugh-
ter! It will be on Friday 14th July at Nethercott
House near Okehampton, Farms for City Chil-
dren?s Devon Farm, where Illyria will be per-
forming the play 'The Emperor's New Clothes'.
The event will take place outside at Nethercott
House, near Okehampton, EX19 8SN. Tickets
are £16 for adults and £12 for children under
12. Gates open at 5pm. A hog roast and drinks
will be available from 5.30pm. The perform-
ance will begin promptly at 7pm and lasts 1
hour 40 minutes including a 20 minute inter-
val. Tickets are available via Farms for City
Children's website
www.farmsforcitychildren.org. or please
phone for tickets on 01392 276381. EX19 8SN

Our “Music in the Barn” Day The day dawned bright, sunny and warm on Sat-urday 13th May 2017 for our Musical Afternoon in the Barn at our home “Oakhayes” between Monkokehampton and Winkleigh. After a week spent preparing the Big Barn for the Orchestra known as the Bondleigh Barn Band to perform in, also to accommodate the audience, together with the Baby Barn which our team of 5 ladies used to prepare the Devon Cream Teas, all was at last ready. In great anticipation, 39 musicians turned up at 1.45pm to park in the field and then to tune their instruments in readiness for playing and from 2pm onwards nearly 200 folk turned up to listen to us playing everything from Classic, Jazz, Folk and some sing-along songs which everyone joined in – we made it easy by having the words

on a big screen for all to read so there was no excuse for people not singing !! In the interval our worthy team of 5 ladies sold the Cream Teas that they had been busy preparing while the orchestra was playing and it took over an hour to serve them as there was such demand !! It all turned into a very happy, social occasion with lots of fa-miliar music thrown in for good measure. Alan and I would like to thank everyone who helped us prepare for this event, for all the musicians who came to play, for so many people who took time out to come and listen to us and enjoy a Cream Tea and for every-one who donated so generously to Devon Air Ambulance – we raised £972.50 (plus two 5 US Dimes which I believe I had dropped into our Devon Air POT thinking they were 5p pieces !!). Our Thanks for making our event such a huge success - from Jennie & Alan GILL
