Hat-trick Avoided Wednesday Wonders Summer Series 2019-20 Race 19 (26 Feb 2020) A rainy Wednesday morning coupled with a strong wind warning which saw winds of 25 to 30 knots with a maximum gust of 39 knots created the possibility of 3 abandoned races in a row. A rainy Wednesday morning coupled with a strong wind warning which saw winds of 25 to 30

knots with a maximum gust of 39 knots created the possibility of 3 abandoned races in a row.

Almost right on cue the clouds rolled away, the sun made an appearance and the wind eased. A

hat-trick of abandoned races had been avoided. Nevertheless there were still 2 metre waves

and a southwest to southerly breeze that averaged about 20 knots to contend with – the highest

average wind speed for a race this series. A small fleet of 16 yachts took up the challenge of an

invigorating race around a good course which was, not surprisingly, one of the fastest races of

the series. About 50% of the 9.9 nautical mile course 14 was a beat with the remaining half a

run. It proved to be a good result for some of the “big boats”.

Producing her best start of the series to win Start of the Day with a time of 1 second was

BRANNEW (Clive Sondheim). It was the first podium appearance this summer for each of the

yachts placed 1, 2 and 3. STAMPEDE (Christopher Gendala) not only made this her first win of

the series she recorded the fastest elapsed time. Although SALTSHAKER was 2nd across the

finish line she was judged not to have signed on so BACARDI (Martin Power) was placed 2nd

with ALEX TEAM MACADIE (Jock Macadie) 3rd.

The aggregate top three all sailed this race but their relative positions remain the same and

have done so since race 12. LUSCIOUS (Michael Butler) retains the lead on 33 points with

ESPRIT (Garry Anderson) on 35 points and PEGASUS (Andy & David Lynch) on 38 points.

However SKULLDUGGERY (Garry McCarten) is now equal on points with PEGASUS. By

finishing 4th in this race RAZZLE DAZZLE (Andrew Stopp & Graeme Jones) moves back into

the aggregate top ten after an absence of 4 weeks with ROLLER COASTER (Geoffrey

Simpson), who didn’t compete in this race, slipping from 10th into 11th place.

STAMPEDE has completed 9 races so far this

summer and this is her best result to date. Her

previous best was 12th in race 9 when the wind

averaged about 17 knots. She made a good start to

the race from 15th place only 5 seconds late for her 58

minute handicap. She completed the first 3 legs of the

course in 50 minutes 38 seconds and rounded SYC 4

in 12th place – 15 minutes 39 seconds behind the race

leader. STAMPEDE sailed the last 3 legs of the

course in 35 minutes 44 seconds to be first across the

finish line at 15:54:27. This is the 3rd time this summer

that STAMPEDE has sailed the course in the fastest

elapsed time and she moves from 30th to 24th in the

aggregate – her highest place this series.

BACARDI has completed 10 races this summer and like STAMPEDE this is her best result so

far. She started from 11th place 28 seconds

late for her 49 minute handicap. She rounded

SYC 4 in 9th place after sailing the first 3 legs

of the course in 56 minutes 47 seconds. The

remaining 3 legs of the course were

completed in 39 minutes 19 seconds and she

crossed the finish line at 15:55:34. BACARDI

had started the race only 15 seconds after

WINDSPEED but was able to slowly increase

her lead throughout the race to finish 50

seconds ahead. BACARDI improves her

position in the aggregate by 5 places moving

from 24th to be 17th in the aggregate.

Although there have been a couple of setbacks ALEX has followed a path of continuous

improvement throughout her 9 completed

races this summer. She started this race

from 14th place 16 seconds late for her 56

minute handicap. She rounded SYC 4 for

the first time at 15:19:24 in 13th place only

41 seconds behind STAMPEDE.ALEX

sailed the last 3 legs of the course in 36

minutes 20 seconds to cross the finish line

at 15:55:44 just 77 seconds behind

STAMPEDE. She recorded the 2nd fastest

elapsed time of the race. ALEX moves

from 20th to 14th in the aggregate – her

highest position so far.

The median start time for the race was 12 seconds

with 7 of the yachts starting within 10 seconds or

less of their handicaps and 3 yachts more than a

minute late. BRANNEW won the start to be the 3rd

yacht to win with a time of 1 second.

The 16 yachts started the race 46 minutes 51 seconds apart and rounded SYC 4 within 13

minutes 10 seconds of each other. By the time the last yacht crossed the finish line the gap had

become 19 minutes 7 seconds. On average a yacht crossed the finish line every 72 seconds

way above the average

of 16 seconds recorded

in race 2. The closest

finish in the race was

for 11th place between

MAGIC (Phil Spry

bailey) and FOGGY

DEW (Joe O’Grady &

Frank Hilliard) who

finished 4 seconds

apart.
