If, as Helen Geelhoed believes, the quiet tranquility of gardening provides arelief from stress, then so should her husband Andrew’s collection of street rodautomobiles. The seeming incongruity of a garden’s peaceful stillness and the
rumble of American mechanical muscle will be the feature of the Saturday, July12 stop at the Geelhoed residence on Upton Road as part of the 17th annual “Dayin the Garden” tour sponsored by the Thornapple Garden Club. The couple’sstunning gardens and the custom car work of Andrew’s and that of some of hisfriends is expected to entice more men to accompany their wives or friends on thisyear’s tour. Six private Hastings gardens are lined up for viewing this year from10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also included for the $8 tour ticket price will be the popularGarden Thyme Market on the courthouse lawn where artistic photographs, lawnart, live music -- and maybe even more street rods will be available. For an up close look at three gardens on this year’s tour, turn inside.

Setting the table for a healthier barry countyThe B. Healthy Coalition was formed in April of 2012 as a result of the Community Health Needs Assessment, which found obesity prevention as one of the community health needs in Barry County. This coalition is a partnership among Pennock Health Services and the Barry-Eaton District Health Department and involves community participation from a variety of supporters including the Barry Community Foundation. The overarching goal of the B.Healthy Coalition is to reduce the obesity rate among Barry County residents to be at or lower than State of Michigan average according to the County Health rankings.
Through a focus on policy and environmental change the B. Healthy coalition has an aim to make the “healthy choice the easy choice,” and to increase awareness of a healthy lifestyle and how that helps to support and promote overall physical and mental health. The B.Healthy Coalition has been meeting monthly since April 2012 to assess the factors that lead to obesity in Barry County, as well as develop a shared vision of a community that prevents obesity. The coalition’s plan for intervention uses a broad set of evidence-based prevention strategies that take into consideration health disparities related to obesity in Barry County to assure a multifaceted and comprehensive approach to obesity prevention for the entire community.
Our Goals• Increase awareness of healthy and positive
food/activity choices to those who live, work and play in Barry County, MI.
• Institute a plan to develop and implement a comprehensive policy driven approach to affect positive change.
• Increase physical activity levels in Barry County, MI.
• Increase access to healthy foods in Barry County, MI.
• Continue to maintain and further develop a local coalition to address obesity prevention and secure funding for B. Healthy strategies in Barry County.
Our missionThe mission of the B. Healthy Coalition is to foster an active, healthy community by creating policy and environmental changes that make the healthy choice the easy choice for all Barry County residents.
Our visionThe vision of the B. Healthy Coalition is for Barry County to become the healthiest rural county in Michigan.
