It gives me great pleasure to w
elcome you all again to H
astings for the 91stH
astings International Chess C
ongress. As I m
entioned last year, it is goodto see both old and new
players once again in Hastings. W
e are very proudof our long history in supporting and prom
oting the game of chess and
have, in the past, welcom
ed some very fam
ous players and others who w
enton to becom
e so. I rem
ember w
hen I was at school a teacher of m
ine, Mr Frank R
hoden. He
was then an international chess referee. Together w
ith my father, m
yteacher taught m
e to play chess, as he did many other boys at our school.
He w
as a mem
ber of the Hastings C
hess Club and helped a lot of people to
appreciate chess, building on the interest shown in the gam
e in Hastings
over the years. W
ith the high standard of players that attend the Congress annually I believe
this year will be another resounding success. I congratulate the organisers
on the work they have done to organise this event and look forw
ard to some
challenging and exciting games.
I wish all of the organisers and com
petitors a very enjoyable time w
hile inH
astings. May I also take this opportunity to w
ish you a Happy N
