Medicine

• Potentially the most profound area of progress and innovation in medicine would be pharmaceuticals.

• Now prescription drugs decrease disease processes and prolong life in almost all areas of medicine.

• The list would be lengthy and include such conditions as congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, diabetes, renal insufficiency, cancer, stroke, AIDS, emphysema and multitudes of auto-immune diseases.

•

Technology

• The microelectronics industry is continually striving to miniaturize conventional silicon-based electronic devices to provide higher performance technology that can be housed in smaller packaging.

Agriculture

• A little bit of manure and fertilizer can considerably improve the perspectives of Zimbabwean smallholder farmers in semi-arid regions.

• Nitrogen availability was found to be the factor that most limited farmers’ efforts to increase cereal yields.

• Dutch-sponsored researcher Bongani Ncube demonstrated this after four years of research on smallholder farms of her home country.

Environment

• The ideas of “sustainable chemistry” and “green chemistry” are catching on throughout the world.

• These terms refer not only to lower consumption of energy and resources, but also to the chemical technologies that reduce or eliminate the generation and use of raw materials, chemical products, and by-products that are harmful to the environment and human health.

The future

• Many construction projects are going 'green,' as people want to live and work in buildings that use the planet's resources efficiently. As a result, the construction industry is turning to durable and energy-efficient materials--most of which are products of modern chemistry.

• Science and technology have contributed to better soil, nutrient, water, and pest management, as well as improved methods for planting, harvesting, storing, processing, and transporting farm products.

Therefore, Chemistry has helped…

• To develop medicine innovation for treatments • To improve technology• To help agriculture• To develop new techniques that would not

damage the environment• Consequently, chemistry has helped our earth

and ourselves. Over the years, chemistry has attributed to better our lives everyday, whether we accepted or not.
