Being diagnosed with cancer can be an overwhelming experience that changes lives instantly. From the fear of the unknown to traversing the various areas of the healthcare system to struggling with the cost of treatment, it can be a confusing process. Through the help of the Northeast Georgia Medical Center Patient Navigation Program, cancer patients don’t have to deal with these challenges alone. The navigators address patient concerns and provide them with guidance during this difficult time.
The Patient Navigators serve as advocates to assist in the coordination of cancer treatment through survivorship. The navigator works closely with physicians at Longstreet Cancer Center (LCC) to ensure the patients have the best possible outcome in treatment and support.
Lisa Bridges, R.N., B.S.N., and Elida Lopez are truly making a difference in the quality and outcomes of the treatment experience. Since the program’s inception in March 2007, they have served 2,382 patients and caregivers!
You can talk one-on-one with a patient navigator about your situation and needs. These ladies will listen to you and keep your information private. You can meet with a patient navigator as many times as you want, and the program is free.
How can a Patient Navigator help me? • Learn about your cancer and treatment options providing
easy-to-understand information • Give emotional support

RECIPE
Beware Energy Dense Foods When Cutting CaloriesHopefully you are now aware that being overweight can
increase your chances of developing cancer. What exactly is the link between body fat and the incidence of cancer? Basically, fat tissue is active tissue. Fat cells produce estrogen and proteins (called cytokines) which cause inflammation and also can increase blood levels of insulin and related factors that may lead to cancer.
There seems to be more hormones and cytokines pumped into our blood stream if excess body fat is around the stomach area. The bottom line is that this excess weight increases inflammation and insulin resistance which encourages cells to grow and divide more quickly, which in turn raises the chances for cancer to develop.
I often suggest to those trying to lose weight to be aware of energy (or calorie) dense foods because it is easy to consume excess calories when these foods are your major choices. Think about this: If it usually takes 20 bites of food before feeling full and you choose energy dense foods, those 20 bites will give you a large amount of calories before you feel satisfied. But if you choose low energy dense foods, the same 20 bites will be much lower in total calories BUT give you the same sense of satisfaction.
At right is a simplified categorization of foods and their energy density. And remember, small changes when they are consistent can make a difference.
ENERGY DENSITY FOOD CATEGORIESVery Low-Energy-Dense Foods Includes fruits and vegetables, skim milk and
broth-based soupsLow-Energy-Dense Foods Includes many cooked grains, breakfast cereals with
low fat milk, low fat meats, beans and legumes, low fat mixed dishes and salads
Medium-Energy-Dense Foods Includes meats, cheeses, high fat mixed dishes, salad
dressings and some snack foodsHigh-Energy-Dense Foods Includes crackers, chips, chocolate candies, cookies,
butter and oil, bacon, full fat mayonnaiseAdapted from “Volumetrics” by Barbara Rolls, Ph.D., and Robert A.

Shower them with fresh herbs, for flavor and health benefits, as well.
