Most people don’t understand. They look at a pile of wood and see a pile of work. You look at a pile of wood and see the result of an honest day’s work. With the E-Classic’s efficient design and operation, it requires up to 70% less wood than other wood-burning appliances. That means your woodpile will last longer. We do apologize for that.

Spend less time doing whatyou love. Sorry about that.

‘Diabolical’ Corn Mazewill benefit schools

Proceeds from the corn maze this year will go to benefit school PTOs and PTAs in the com-munity.

The corn stalks have grown talland are ready to challenge any-one who enters the Corn Maze

during the Harvest Festival at BethelWoods Center for the Arts.

For the second year in a row, themaze was designed by Bethel WoodsEducation Programs Manager MarkRobinson, who has a knack for devis-ing tricky labyrinths.

“The grounds crew has told me mymazes are diabolical,” Mark chuckled.“They get lost while they are cutting it[down after festival season] since it isso confusing.”

Mark has been fascinated by puz-zles since he was young and jumpedat the opportunity to create the mazefor the festival. The 200’ x 325’ mazecan take anywhere from about 15 to40 minutes to navigate and includes10 dead-ends along the way.

As the education manager, Robin-son visited multiple schools to talkabout Bethel Woods’ programs andthought it would be great if the mazecould benefit them.

Now the proceeds from the cornmaze at this year’s Harvest Festivalwill go toward the school’s PTOs andPTAs, and volunteers from theschools will come to run the maze.

“We really wanted to have themcome and benefit from us,” statedRobinson.

The annual maze has become a tra-dition of the festival, one that manypeople look forward to, and hundredsof visitors will attempt to navigate thepassages between the corn.

Each year local farmers Fred andBill Michel of Michel Farms donatetheir time, equipment and corn seedto plant the corn in May.

Robinson said, “It is planted differ-ently than usual corn crops in that[the Michels] sow seed in two direc-tions. This gives us a thicker crop tocarve the maze out of. The corn isusually ‘knee high by the 4th of July.’At that point we have decided on adesign for the maze and we begin tolay it out. We make the first of three

cuttings at that time. A second cut-ting is made about two-three weekslater. The final cutting is more of agrooming and is completed justprior to our first Harvest Festival onLabor Day weekend.”

The maze is cut and maintained bythe Bethel Woods ground crew.

Admission for this year’s maze is $2.

Poster ChildWhen Bethel Woods Center for

the Arts wanted a new look forits 2012 Harvest Festival, the

organization reached out to SUNY Sul-livan Graphic Design & ComputerGraphics professors Tom Ambrosinoand Mark Lawrence. The venture was sosuccessful that in 2013 the college againprovided the artistic talent to create theposter.

The winning entry was submitted byAshley Negron of Liberty, one ofAmbrosino’s students, and entering hersophomore year this fall.

The department has presented thisproject to their students not only as anexcellent classroom exercise, but as areal-world job that most establishedmarketing agencies would jump at thechance to pitch. Over 50 students in thetwo years joined in the process of con-ceptualizing and creating materials forthe client’s consideration.

“There’s nothing like competition toraise the bar,” Ambrosino noted.

Operating as a creative team, SUNYSullivan faculty and students held ameeting with executives from BethelWoods in order to define the project.Bethel presented its needs and goals,

sharing with the SUNY Sullivan teamthe mission and vision of the center.

Taking the knowledge gained in thismeeting, the students began the cre-ative process with Ambrosino andLawrence functioning as much as artdirectors than as teachers.

“This was very much an ‘agency style’approach,” explained Ambrosino. “Thestudents worked on this project just asadvertising professionals would. And,by handling Bethel Woods as a ‘client,’the students got the kind of invaluableexperience that some industry profes-sionals wait years to get.”

This collaboration between the SUNYSullivan creative team and BethelWoods culminates in a final meetingduring which select students presentedtheir concepts and designs to represen-tatives from Bethel Woods, includingDenise Frangipane and Channyn Culli-gan, and members of the SUNY SullivanBoard of Trustees, including chairmanNick Speranza.

Indeed, Bethel Woods has expressedits interest in continuing this project asan ongoing collaboration between theirorganization and the college. All mem-bers of the creative team involved with

The Harvest Festival reflects BethelWoods’ commitment to community, and this partnership with SUNY Sulli-van is further evidence of that. Commu-nity is, as Bethel Woods has stated,“central to the core values and missionof Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.”

The Harvest Festival is supported bythe Gerry Foundation as well as othersponsors (including SUNY Sullivan)who share a commitment to communi-ty and regional economic develop-ment.

‘Hopstock’In the spring of 2013, SUNY Sullivan

received a grant from Sullivan Ren-aissance to develop an experimental

hop garden on its 400-plus acre cam-pus.

With the microbrew industry boomtaking place in the Hudson Valley andCatskills, many local breweries haveexpressed interest in utilizing localhops for their products. This, along withthe support of local and state legisla-tors, has encouraged hops producersstatewide to reintroduce this once

bountiful crop to the region. Once a very popular crop in New York

state, hops have not been grown herecommercially since blight essentiallywiped it out nearly a century ago. Priorto that, hops farming supported avibrant brewing business – including in

Sullivan County. Now, SUNY Sullivanhopes to play an integral role in theresurgence of hop farming in the area.

The college garden was planted inApril, and the initial 30 plants includednative varieties of hops: Cascade,Willamette, and Centennial. The firstsprouts showed up less than a week afterplanting and have been flourishing eversince. The productivity and quality ofthe different varieties is tracked, in part, through student projects.

The garden, which also includes abackup plot, is tended to by SUNYSullivan students, faculty, and staff.

The hops project grew from the col-lege’s Appreciative Inquiry process andhas been encouraged by interest fromcommunity members and people with-in the local microbrew industry. The gar-den will help local farmers and brewersbetter understand the future potentialfor hop farming in Sullivan County. Inresponse to the strong public interestaround this project, the college hasbegun exploring potential educationalopportunities for community membersinterested in the craft brewing industry.

As of August 2013, the hops have con-

tinued to flourish. Climbing the wires ofthe garden, many of the plants arequickly approaching harvest.

Tours of the hop garden will be pro-vided during the college’s upcoming“Hop, Scotch, & Vine Fest” on Saturday,September 28, when local brewers, dis-tillers, and vintners will be on campus to

share tastings of their products. Theevent will cost $10 for admission, andwill take place on the campus courtyardbetween noon–5 p.m.

Funding for the hops project wasmade possible in part by a SullivanRenaissance Environmental InitiativesGrant.

Graphic Design Professor Tom Ambrosino designed this signage for the experimental hopgarden. It is being built by SUNY’s Buildings and Grounds Director Tracy Hall.
