Living God’s Word “Renounce your possessions,” the Gospel insists (Luke 14:33). We can’t say that we always have. Rather, it seems that we’ve often done more accumulating than renouncing. And yet each accumulation may have made room for one more way of being made new as the disciples we all are called to become.

Dear Parishioners, Labor Day is celebrated unlike any other national holiday because it is different in nature. Labor Day is not

dedicated to war heroes or to one remarkable person, but rather to all who work. Labor Day was first celebrated in New York in 1884. It was intended to provide a holiday to recognize the hard work of ordinary men and women and their contribution to society. It marked the beginning of labor unions and the or-ganization of workers with the intent to ensure that workers’ basic human rights would be protected and respected. The fair treatment of employees and a safe working environment are an essential part of promoting the dignity of every human life. Pope Saint John Paul II said: “Workers want to share in the responsibility and creativity of the very work process. Work is a gift to be appreciated, not a burden to escape. You are a steward of the talents God gave you, and you’ve been entrust-ed to use them to their fullest.” Certainly there are many types of work that are difficult and burdensome. Yet when we recog-nize the difference our work makes and how it helps others, we can gain a sense of pride and fulfillment. Let us pray for all who labor and those who are seeking meaningful employment. May God bless the work entrusted to each of us. Next Saturday, September 10th is St. Mary’s 4th Annual Harvest Fest, which is celebrated on our beautiful parish grounds. I am very grateful to Chris Smola and the dedicated committee that has been working on this festival for months. Harvest Fest is the largest social event of the year and the only parish fund raiser of the year. The majority of the net funds raised are a direct result of the parish raffle. I am very grateful to Rita Gunther for her hard work managing the ticket sales and all who have helped to distribute raffle tickets. If you have not yet purchased yours, it is not too late! Harvest Fest is a great opportunity to gather with parishioners and friends in a safe and family friendly environment. I hope to see you next Saturday night!

Blessing Prayer for Labor Day Heavenly Father, bless the work of our hands. Help us to be good stewards of the talents and skills you have entrusted to us. May we always be grateful for those whose labors contribute to a more just and moral society. Helps us to be good stewards of the work you have entrusted to us. We ask that you inspire and guide all who are seeking meaningful work. May those whose hands and hearts are tired or weary find comfort and rest. May the work and service that you have entrusted to each of us al-ways be pleasing to you. Amen. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry

Annual Catholic Appeal Update We continue to receive good news about the results of the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal! The most recent update from the Archdio-cese shows that so far 535 parishioners have pledged $199,336, of which $180,829 has already been paid! We are very grateful for the terrific response of our generous parishioners! If you have not yet made a pledge, you may still do so in the Parish Office or from the Stewardship tab on our parish web site. The Appeal is a large and critical source of funding for the Archdiocese and the parish. All money received that exceeds our parish goal of $77,229 is returned to St. Mary. As in previous years, this “rebate” is a very important source of funding for the functioning of our parish and its ministries. The Appeal rebate also helps us to address critical big ticket items and emergency repairs that are outside the scope of our normal budget. For example, proceeds from the 2015 Appeal helped us to repair our two cam-pus water wells and the air conditioning in Diantha Hall. St. Mary also directly benefits from Archdiocesan programs for Catholic Schools, Religious Education, Youth Ministry, and Lay Ministry Formation (among others) that are supported by gifts to the Annu-al Appeal. We thank everyone for your generous pledges and pay-ments to the Appeal. We are very grateful for all those who sacri-fice to support the Archdiocese and St. Mary of the Annunciation!

Labor Day Mass Monday, September 5, 9:00 AM in the Big Church Begin your observance of Labor Day with the celebration of the Eucharist.

Invited The Good News is that we have all been invited—invited to the Kingdom, invited to be disciples. It’s a life-changing invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and consideration that accompany these profound decisions. Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we be-lieve God has called us. And while we pray for guidance and ac-ceptance of God’s will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solo-mon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life-changing deci-sions.

St. Mary Prayer Angels As members of St. Mary's parish faith community, it is our responsibility to re-member in spiritual ways those among us who are ill in mind, body, or spirit. We

have a ministry under Human Concerns called “St. Mary’s Prayer An-gels” ministry. This ministry is for anyone who has regular access to their email and agrees to pray for the intentions and needs of our par-ish community as they arise. How it works: If you are in need of urgent prayers for yourself or a family member,

you simply email your request to Diane Mulroe [email protected] and then your request will be added to the next outgoing Prayer Angels email.

If you would like to be a praying member of the Prayer Angels Minis-try, you subscribe to receive emails. Once you are subscribed, you will periodically receive an email with the names of those who are in need of urgent prayers as well as the names of our beloved deceased. As a member of the ministry, you agree to pray for those in need of our love and support.

Permission must be given by either the individual or a family member to add the prayer request to the Prayer Angels email. All prayers that parishioners entrust to us are confidential to the St. Mary Prayer An-gels only and are not to be forwarded or posted on any form of social network. If you would like to join this ministry, please visit the wel-come page on the St. Mary of the Annunciation website http://www.stmaryfc.org/#/welcome and click on the graphic “Click here to join the parish email lists” or email Diane Mulroe and you will be added to the subscription and email distribution for St. Mary Prayer Angels.

Worship Commission Ministry Fair September 17 & 18

How will you share your gift with the parish?

Altar Servers Open to young parishioners in 4th through 12th grades. These young people develop initiative and forethought by assisting the priest and deacon at Mass. Greeters and Ushers A personal welcome helps engage a worshiper. Ushers and Greeters assist where needed, from helping to find seats, taking up the offertory collection, to giving emergency assistance. Eucharistic Ministers Teens and adults are trained and mandated by the Archdiocese to act as extraordinary ministers of Communion. Lectors Teens and adults are trained for the proclamation of the Word. Sacristans The many articles required for the celebration of the sacraments are the area of sacristans, from candles and cups to vesture and linens. Music Ministry Helping the assembly sing God’s praises, as well as exercising their own particular role in the sacred liturgy, is the goal of music ministers. Along with the Contemporary Choir and the Parish Choir, we would like to organize a funeral choir and a children’s choir. Eucharistic Adoration The Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration one day each month. Adorers as well as additional coordinators are sought. Wedding Coordinators These persons assist the brides, grooms, attendants, and their fami-lies with the details associated with the wedding liturgy both in the planning and on the day of the wedding. Rosary and Divine Mercy Ministry These dedicated persons recite the Rosary after daily Mass Monday through Thursday, and the Divine Mercy Novena & Chaplet on Fridays immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass. The Family Rosary is recited every first Saturday of the month at 4:30 PM. Simbang Gabi St. Mary’s is the site of one of the nine Lake County area novena Masses in preparation for Christmas. Along with a festive celebration of the Eucharist, a reception with food and fellowship is offered. Call-Me Ministry Even though you may have the desire, you may not have the ability to regularly commit to a ministry. Call-Me ministers share their contact information with ministries in which they have an interest. When extra help is needed, ministry coordinators give these ministers a call.

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

Today’s Gospel reading asking us to “hate” our families and renounce all possessions makes us VERY uncomfortable. If

we are honest with ourselves, we can see that we have many things (to the point that our garages are full and some of us rent storage units to hold even more stuff). We are not only attached to those things we have but we want even more! Yet, Jesus tells

us to renounce our possessions. And how are we to understand his instruction to also renounce the people we love and who love us? It’s not that having things is somehow inherently bad. Nor does Jesus literally mean that we should hate our families. Rather, it is our attach-ment to possessions (or family obligations) to the point that we place them ahead of God and the needs of others that is bad. Jesus’ point is that we need relinquish whatever owns us and diverts or dilutes our love for God and our neighbors, whether that is material “stuff,” family bonds, desires for pleasure or control or... This teaching is a far cry from the so-called “gospel of wealth” offered by some television evan-gelists who claim Jesus wants us to be materially rich. Sometimes I wonder if these folks have ever read the Gospels! Consider the follow-ing reflection from Catholic author Tom McGrath: Have you ever felt like a camel? I did several years ago. My family and I were on a long-awaited vacation to Italy where my wife and I had studied together in our junior year of college. Back in college I traveled all over Europe with just a small backpack and not even a credit card to my name. But this time we were loaded down like pack animals. You never real-ize just how much stuff you’ve packed until you drag it with you up and down the canals of Venice like a mini-caravan. As I lugged my over-sized rolling suitcase up the steps of the Grand Canal I realized all too well just how encumbered my life had become. And so I worry when-ever [the] reading of the “camel through the eye of a needle” gospel comes around. Sometimes I look around my house at all the accoutre-ments I’ve gathered, and I feel very much like a dromedary loaded down with wares. A while back an environmental group suggested that people carry around with them all the trash they produce in a week. All of it. Chick-en bones and empty shampoo bottles, old Kleenexes and Popsicle sticks, tin cans and Starbucks cups. Then we’d know just how many trappings we rely on to sustain the life we lead. And it might also give us a glimpse of how our life can get too caught up acquiring and main-taining “things” rather than enjoying the freedom that comes from knowing God’s love is sufficient. We need to understand the “all in” commitment that is required to be a disciple. Tepid going-through-the-motions will not cut it. Giving God and the work of the Gospel the remnant of whatever remains of our attention and time after we’ve taken care of oneself and family will not cut it. May we learn to simplify our lives and work to rid ourselves of the unnecessary attachments which divert us from having a proper reliance on God. Let us take this Labor Day not only as a respite from

ACDVO Needs to Hear from You The Archdiocesan Committee on Domestic Violence Outreach is working with Loyola University Chicago’s Center for Urban Re-search & Learning (CURL), the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law and the Chicago Foundation for Women to re-search how public K-12 Illinois schools respond to the needs of stu-dent survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence. The project will be used to improve Illinois state policy. We need stories from student survivors, parents, and school staff about their experiences. This valuable input will help shape policy to ensure all schools meet the needs of youth survivors. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Interviews can be conduct-ed by phone or in-person and a cash stipend is paid to survivors for participating. If you would like to share your story, or if you would like more information, please contact Jennifer Cossyleon at 773-508-8502, [email protected].

St. Mary of the Annunciation Bereavement Ministry

10 Week Grief Support Group:

“FINDING HOPE/HEALING HEARTS” One of North America's leading grief educators, Dr. Alan Wolfelt has written many books about healing in grief. In compassionate, down-to-earth language, Understanding Your Grief describes ten touch-stones—or trail markers—that are essential physical, emotional, cogni-tive, social, and spiritual signs for mourners to look for on their journey through grief. This book is his most comprehensive, covering the es-sential lessons that mourners have taught him in his three decades of working with the bereaved. Think of your grief as a wilder-ness—a vast, inhospitable for-est. You must journey through this wilderness. To find your way out, you must become acquainted with its terrain and learn to follow the sometimes hard-to-find trail that leads to healing. In the wilderness of your grief, the touchstones are your trail markers. They are the signs that let you know you are on the right path. When you learn to identify and rely on the touchstones, you will find your way to hope and healing. This weekly group will meet at St. Mary of the Annunciation for 10 consecutive Thursdays, September 15–November 17, 2016, 6:30–8:00pm. The group size is limited so register now! The $30.00 registration fee covers the cost of the two books. To register, contact Diane Mulroe at the St. Mary parish office. [email protected] or call 847-223-0010 Here is what has been said about the experience of the Finding Hope/Healing Hearts group: “[The group] normalized feelings and situations; felt comfort with new friends; hope was built”

“That I’m not the only one going through this; that slowly it will get better; there will be ups and downs”

“Commonality and continuity; facilitators compassionate and real in their approach; each person has added to the group”

“Enjoyed sharing experiences with others in the group; realizing I’m not crazy after all.”

Bake Sale To all members of St. Mary of the Annunciation Senior Club October 22 a & 23 23 Time is flying by—Summer is almost at its end and Fall leaves will soon be falling, which means our Bake Sale is right around the cor-ner. In order to have a successful fund-

raiser for our Club, it takes all members to participate. We are asking each member to bake and package each item so it is ready to sell. Some suggestions that have been made are: • Instead of presenting one large cake, consider cutting it in half or

quarters. • We have many people who live alone or would like to buy 2 or 3

items that will give them more variety. • Please identify your items such as nuts, chocolate or gluten free,

etc. We will accept bakery donations on Saturday, October 22 and Sun-day, October 23, starting at 7:30A.M. If you are unable to provide baked goods, we respectfully request a cash donation. A sign-up sheet will be passed at our September meeting with times and positions when help is really needed to take care of customers. Please be generous with your time. Thank you for your support. We couldn’t do it without you!

Ministry of Care…What Is It? Visits to Homes: Do you know a friend, neighbor or relative who is no longer able to attend Mass? Many homebound persons participate in the Mass by watching the Mass on TV. But they miss a key element by not being able to

receive the Eucharist. We have a ministry which brings prayers and Communion to the homebound called “Ministry of Care” or MOC. Min-isters of Care typically visit on a weekly basis and thereby bring the love and support of the community of St. Mary’s Church to them. All Ministers of Care have received archdiocesan training and participate in ongoing faith formation opportunities. If you or someone you know is interested in having a Minister of Care come and visit, please contact Diane Mulroe in the parish office. [email protected]
