fetes are only held in alternate years, we really try to involve all families and to raise as much money as possible for the school which ultimately benefits our students. Please remember that you can assist in the following ways:-

By selling the raffle tickets that will be sent

home mid next week. The prizes are terrific and if

all families can manage this it will add over $8,000

to the fete profits.

Donating pre-loved children’s clothing; second

hand uniforms or books and bottles of wine for the

lucky bottle stall. These can be dropped off at

school.

By supporting the home produce stall – this

needs to be our main focus. Please see the

attached form in this newsletter for more

information.

Helping on a stall for an hour or two, so that the

workload is spread fairly. Your class reps are

organising rosters so please assist in this way if

you can. More news about the fete will follow in

the coming weeks.

Icy Poles for Sale in the Canteen From tomorrow- Thursday November 3rd, icy poles will be on sale for 50c at the canteen on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime and on Fridays after school. The Year 6 parents and students have organised this and all proceeds will go towards the Year 6 Graduation. This is a wonderful service for the school community as the weather becomes hotter. Student Placement 2017 I used to ask parents to notify me in writing of any special factors they would like considered when class groupings for the following year were being formulated. As has been the case for the last few years, I am asking you NOT to write to me this year, instead I urge you to put your faith in the teachers who work with your children each day, and trust that they will organise cohesive groups of students who will work well together. They understand both the academic and social needs of your children really well. Each teacher is aware of which groups of children work co-operatively and which are better separated. They provide input gleaned from parent meetings and other situations which they believe need consideration when home groups are formed. We have already asked each student to list some friends with whom they work well and would like to have in their home group in 2017. This will be one piece of information used by teachers as a guide when they meet to form home groups for next

year. Now that all students have been working in our new flexible classrooms for several years, we will not be guaranteeing that they will be placed with any of the students on their list. Rather the teachers will use the lists as a guide. The children are very aware that they work each day with all the students in their year level and that they have a main home group teacher and several other year level teachers with whom they work as well. This process has worked well for the last three years and I believe that most of the 2016 class groupings are very cohesive and the students in each home group have worked well together. I am confident that we are building greater resilience, co-operation and tolerance in our students and that with your support and that of our teachers our students will learn to solve more of the small issues themselves. Please keep this in mind when I say that only letters outlining extra-ordinary factors, which we do not already know about, e.g. cousins who may end up in the same class, twins being separated or placed together etc., should be sent to me. I am not able to accommodate and therefore cannot accept requests regarding teachers. Nor should such requests be sent to teachers, but rather they can be sent to me by Friday November 11th. Teachers take into account social interaction, maturity and safety of students, friendship groups and of course academic ability when organising new home groups. As I said earlier, in our new flexible learning spaces the students mix with more students than those in their home groups on a daily basis. Thank you for your understanding of this matter. Reminders

Thank you to those who have notified me if their

children will not be attending Hartwell in 2017. This

is very helpful and has enabled me to begin

putting in place systems and plans for next year. If

you have not yet let me know that your child will be

leaving could you please do so this week.

‘Ready, Set, Go’ resumes next week,

November 11 from 9.40-10.40am in the Prep

learning community.

Hartwell P. S. “Sunsmart-approved” hats

available from the uniform shop are a compulsory

aspect of school uniform in terms 1 and 4. Please

work with us to promote and encourage

appropriate sun smart behaviour and habits. The

children’s safety and health is an important issue

for us all.

Kris Moore Principal PE UPDATE HOOP TIME – REGIONAL FINALS Congratulations to our Junior Boys’ All Star team: Archie K, Ben F, Blake L, Campbell D, Christopher R, Emilio V, Jensen H, Riley M, Seb S and Xavier T on their sensational performance at the Regional Finals last Thursday. Winning all of their pool matches, showing impressive skills and outstanding team work, the team finished top of their pool. In an extremely tight and hard fought Grand Final match, which had coach Mick Kuflik on tenterhooks, the boys managed to stay composed and beat Livingstone PS by one point! The boys will now go on to compete at the Hoop Time All Stars State Grand Final Day at Dandenong Stadium on Monday 21st November. Congratulations and thank you to Mick for coaching, Katrina Spargo for scoring and all of the parents for transporting their children to the event. Go Hartwell Boys! The Senior Future Stars also played in their Regional Finals last Thursday out at Ringwood. Well done to: Eloise L, Joel M, Kiara J-G, Ethan S, Logan T, Josh M, Katia K, Max C and Thomas R-B, all of whom demonstrated wonderful resilience and great determination, throughout what was a very tough day on the basketball court. According to coach Nick Holdsworth, this group played some very strong teams and they never gave up and made the most of every opportunity on the court. They thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thanks to Nick for coaching, Adele McKiernan and Caroline Rigby for scoring and all parents for getting your children to Ringwood. Well done team.

EMR SOFTBALL FINALS Best of luck to our Year 6 Girls’ Softball team who will contest the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Softball Finals this Thursday at the Waverley Softball Centre (Jells Park). Coach Nareen Robinson has had the girls training hard and no doubt they will be in the mix for success. Thank you to parents for arranging transport for their players. A reminder they will need to arrive at Jells Park by 9.15am, thank you. Go Hartwell!

HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL YR 3-6 – THURSDAY 10TH NOVEMBER The excitement is building…Year 3-6 students will participate in the HPS House Swimming Carnival

at PLC next Thursday. Permission notices are due back by this Friday 4th Nov, if you have not already returned it. Please collect one from the office asap if you need one. Please email me if you are available to assist with marshalling at [email protected] If you are discussing this event at home, please remember to reassure your child that this will be a fun, safe event. It is about having a go and doing your personal best. Novelty events will be available for children who are not comfortable with participating in the 25m stroke events. If your child has a swimming cap they should bring that on the day. Caps will be supplied for those swimmers who do not have one. We are all looking forward to another great Hartwell House event.

SWIMMING TRIALS – SAVE THE DATE Swimming trials will be held for current Year 2-5 students (2016) on Friday 2nd December from 4pm - 5.00pm at Harold Hold Aquatic Centre. These trials are to gain selection to represent Hartwell PS at the Glen Iris District Swimming Carnival to be held in Term 1 2017. It is imperative that swimmers can swim 50m in their chosen stroke without stopping. Another trial will be held early in Term 1, 2017 for students who are ill, cannot make this trial due to a clash with another activity or those students who are new to the school in 2017.

SUN SMART POLICY We are at week 5 and I am still finding some students are coming to PE without a hat. The UV levels are high and I am going to have to insist that if students do not have a hat, they will need to remain in the shade and may miss part of their PE lesson. Please ensure your child has a hat for their PE session and each school day. Thank you. Jo Bayes PE Teacher & Sport Co-ordinator The Great Fete Second hand uniform stall Please search through your cupboards and check whether you have any items of school uniform to donate to the second hand uniform stall. Every dollar raised from this stall at our fete will go towards the ‘Global Garden of Peace’ which was explained in last week’s newsletter. All donations can be left at the school office & must be washed & ironed ready for sale. Please only donate items that are in very good condition as we cannot sell items that are excessively worn or with faded/incomplete school logos. We are also in need of portable clothes hanging racks, if you are able to lend one or more of these please let us know!T hanks so much, Sally Marks & Sam Greenshields Trash & Treasure Stall
