Welcome to Continue to Learn at BTME 2017
Feedback from BIGGA members is an essential element when designing Continue to Learn at BTME. Through the Members Choice surveys, BIGGA members actively select the education they would like to see included in the programme.
At Continue to Learn at BTME 2017 we will be featuring 250 hours of education that will be presented by more than 75 speakers.
A varied and valuable learning experience, Continue to Learn at BTME 2017 provides education for:
• Greenkeepers / Assistants• First Assistants / Deputies• Course Manager / Head Greenkeeper• Golf Club Owners, Managers and Committee members
The programme has once again been split into differing types of education offerings:

WELCOME FROM BIGGA
We’ve also introduced education ‘Streams’ to help in the selection of education:
• Management Skills• Personal & Career Development• Technical Skills
The Quick Guide lists all of the education events in a simple format (see page 8).
The BTME 2017 App will be updated regularly and will feature the full education programme, provide speaker profiles and full information on the exhibitors. Download the App and keep up to date with all things BTME.
Don’t forget:

BUNDLE TESTIMONIALS“Having used the Booking Bundles for Continue to Learn 2016 I will certainly be on the lookout for 2017. The Bundles allowed all the staff to attend at least one educational seminar each. This would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the money saved on the Booking Bundles.”
Mark Crossley,Course Manager,Prestbury Golf Club
......................................................
“I used the Continue to Learn Booking Bundles for the first time in 2016. I had been set a budget for education and development and the Bundles enabled three of my staff to attend a total of five days of training. This would not have been possible had we had to pay for each day individually. I can certainly recommend them and will be using them again.” Steve Beverly,Head Greenkeeper,Cleethorpes Golf Club
......................................................
“We usually send two team members to Continue to Learn at BTME for two days. In 2016 we used the Bundle packages available to have a further days training for each staff member at reduced cost. Windlesham GC will be looking to repeat this in coming years. A great initiative allowing the company to better support BIGGA members in their education.”
Alastair Higgsformer Course Manager, Windlesham Golf Club
......................................................
SEMINAR PRE-BOOKING FOR BIGGA MEMBERSBIGGA members can pre-book a place for any of the listed Continue to Learn Seminars. 70 seminar places will be made available for each of the sessions held on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 January.
• Pre-booked seminar tickets should be collected from the BIGGA Desk in the Queen’s Suite from Sunday 15 January 2017. Tickets will not be sent out.
• If you do not have your ticket there is no guarantee of a seat. • Pre-booking can only be made by, or for, BIGGA Members.
Once the 70 pre-book places have been allocated, there will be 40-50 seats remaining in the Seminar room that will be available, on a first come, first serve basis, to all visitors.
................................................................................................................................................................................
TESTIMONIALS FOR SEMINAR PRE-BOOKINGS“Pre-booking the free seminars at BTME 2016 made sure that I got a seat in some of the more popular seminars that were likely to sell out quickly. Knowing that all of my seminars were pre-booked also ensured that I could plan my time at BTME more efficiently, meaning I could spend more time in the halls looking at the products on offer and speaking to other greenkeepers and sales reps. Knowing where I needed to be at what time, along with the fact that I wouldn’t have to queue up to enter each seminar meant that I got the most out of each day I was at the show. I will definitely be pre-booking all of my seminars for BTME 2017.”
Stefan Carter, Assistant Greenkeeper, East Course, Wentworth Golf Club
“As a Deputy Course Manager, the time I have available to spend in Harrogate is limited and I always try to attend as many things as possible, whilst also trying to network and socialise. Using the pre-booking service was of huge assistance to me, enabling me to plan and organise my trip more efficiently. I was able to book all of the most important and often most popular seminars in advance and organise my schedule more effectively. Another benefit of the pre-booking service was it enabled me to enjoy the trade show for longer.”
Tom Smith, Head Greenkeeper, Wickham Park Golf Club
“I have used the free seminar pre-booking system for 3 years now. It allows me to plan my day so that I can get the most out of BTME. It has enabled me to see every seminar that I have wanted and has meant that I have always had a seat in the more popular seminars. There is no need for lengthy queuing which there may have been had I not pre-booked. Knowing that I only have to leave the exhibition a few minutes before the seminar starts enables more time on the trade show floor.”
Brett Moggridge, Course Manager, Kirtlington Golf Club
................................................................................................................................................................................

TURF REWARDS
Did you know that you can use Turf Rewards points for your Continue to Learn bookings?
Simply claim your Turf Rewards Continue to Learn vouchers and use them to pay for your education at BTME 2017.
“As both my Head Greenkeeper and I travel to BTME from Scotland for up to four days, the costs of travel, accommodation and education can be significant. To be able to manage these costs without compromising on education is important to us. Turf Rewards offers us the opportunity to cherry pick the best subjects and best presenters without worrying about cost.”
Jim Brown,Golf Courses and Estates Manager, Cameron House & The Carrick on Loch Lomond
“I use Turf Rewards to buy education vouchers as it allows me to send more staff to BTME to take part in the education as well as the exhibition. It’s a great way of sharing things around enabling more of the team to attend.”
Gordon Moir, Director of Greenkeeping, St Andrews Links Trust

An Introduction to MindfulnessThis Masterclass, will introduce you to the key concepts of Mindfulness, which can be easily integrated into your daily life. During the day we will be engaging in various activities to foster mindfulness. These include formal meditation practices, as well as small things we can do in the midst of our daily lives, such as doing a routine task mindfully, taking a break, slowing down a little. In particular we’ll be using the body sensations and the breath, to help develop awareness. The aim of meditation is not to prevent the mind wandering off - which it will do, repeatedly - but to get into the habit of learning to check in with our experience. This in turn, can significantly reduce stress.
Learning Outcomes:
• What One Resists Persists. Much of our stress is exacerbated by our resistance to unpleasant experience, and what we resist tends to persist. So we are caught in a trap: the more we resist the more it persists! Mindfulness allows us to accept experience rather than reacting to it, which - paradoxically - allows us to let go of it. This lightens our load considerably, allowing us to get on with our life quite happily, even though it’s not completely sorted. (And will it ever be?)
• Coming to Our Senses. When we’re stressed we naturally try to do something about it, and this usually entails thinking - problem-solving. The trouble with this strategy is that it doesn’t work very well! In fact it’s more often than not counterproductive. Thinking about our stress keeps us stressed! An important aspect of mindfulness practice is to pay more attention to our senses - body sensations, sounds, sights, tastes - which brings us back to our actual experience in the moment. This greatly reduces stress.
• A Penny for Your Thoughts. Thoughts are one of the main causes of stress, trapping us in a loop in which we try to solve our problems, while the very act of trying to solve the problem keeps us tied to the problem. But what to do? We can’t just stop thinking! One of the skills you’ll learn is to notice thoughts as they arise in your mind and let them go. This is a liberating insight for people who attend the course.
• Your Buttons Don’t Have to be Pressed. Life, as you know, isn’t easy. Financial worries, issues around the way we earn our living and with work colleagues, difficulties in our relationships with family and friends - who doesn’t have them? Mindfulness doesn’t make everything nice and smooth and easy. Rather, it enables us to develop skills and inner resources to cope better - in fact to flourish - in the midst of the sometimes difficult and messy aspects of life. Learning how to be with unpleasant, difficult experiences without allowing them to ‘press our buttons’ is a key skill that you’ll learn.
• The Pleasure of Small Things. Not that life is unremittingly difficult either! There’s pleasure, enjoyment, beauty and love out there too. When we experience some difficulty in life, we have a tendency to focus on it, often to the exclusion of all else and especially the good things that are happening. We encourage you to widen your gaze a little and notice the small pleasures of life, which often go unremarked - the sun coming from behind a cloud and warming your face, a vase of yellow and blue flowers, a compliment from a friend, a job well done. We’re not trying to ‘think positive’, just trying to level the playing field. By noticing the good things and letting them affect us we’re working against what neuroscientists call the inbuilt ’negativity bias’ in the brain.
• The Tender Gravity of Kindness. In a way the word mindfulness gives a wrong impression. People often associate the mind with the head, with the brain, with cool, analytical thought. Mindfulness certainly isn’t that. It’s simply awareness, and not a cool and detached awareness either - it’s warm, gentle, and kind. Self kindness isn’t a weakness, in fact, scientists have discovered that fostering self kindness can help us to overcome difficulties and change behaviour in the long term.

Seminar 1 – Thatch Reduction Techniques Using the Latest Innovative Machinery Available to YouThis seminar will address the issue of organic material/thatch on fairways and approaches and how the latest innovative machinery can help the greenkeeper reduce this from their golf course. We have all heard of the Koro Field TopMaker and the golf side of the industry will associate it with renovating football pitches only. But does the greenkeeper know it is not just a machine for sports pitches? There are golf clubs out there using the Koro FTM to remove problem grasses / organic material / thatch – they are thinking outside the box and using the latest innovative machinery. This seminar will also address aeration and modern new ways.
Learning Outcomes:
• Learn what innovative machines are available for working on golf courses
• Think outside the box and look for new methods

Seminar 2 – How Much Do You Weigh? - Growth Rates and Managing Clip YieldDo you measure growth rate and clip yield? The short answer is generally yes. This may be as simple as asking the greenkeeper how many empties of the grass boxes were required or studying GDD. But can we introduce a more formal assessment of measuring growth rate by clip yield? Understanding growth response to GDD and growth response in relation to nutritional input can help refine the timing of fertiliser and PGR applications and improve the performance of the sward and control of organic matter. Paul Woodham from STRI discusses the concept of measuring clip yield and is joined by Stevie Richardson, Queenwood Golf Club to discuss the practical application of the process.
Learning Outcomes:
• Understand how to measure clip yield• Monitoring growth vs nutrient• Effects of PGR• Measure growth vs GDD• Consider options for scheduling nutrition
