During a 1977 summer saxophone conference in Brussels, then-Chief Musician Dale Underwood per-formed “Concertante” by Clare Grundman with the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides, con-ducted by the U.S. Navy Band’s leader, Cmdr. Ned Muffley. Later in the conference, Muffley discussed the possibility of hosting the band’s own symposium. After some consideration, Muffley turned to Underwood and said, “we can do this and do it better.” In those moments the United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium was born. Of course, this was just the idea. For anything to get done in the military, official orders must be given. Once back at the Washington Navy Yard, Underwood walked by Muffley’s office and received his orders when he heard “Hey Dale, Sax Symposium, do it.” Immediate planning began for the first symposium to be held on March 17-18, 1978 – less than a year away. Although Underwood had never planned anything of this magnitude before, he had attended many other saxophone conferences. He realized the unique potential of hosting a Navy Band Saxophone Symposium because, in addition to the Concert Band, he had access to the Commodores and could incorporate a jazz component to this conference. Additionally, this confer-ence would also set itself apart from others by having fewer guest artists present more clinics and masterclasses divided equally between classical and jazz idioms.

The first concert had an international flavor with the appearance of guest soloist Elie Apper of the Royal Conservatory of Music and guest conductor Commandant Yvon Ducene of the Musique des Guides, both from Brussels, and whom Underwood had met the previous summer at the Belgian saxophone conference. The Friday evening concert featured Underwood, James Houlik and Donald Sinta. On Saturday night, the Commodores performed with jazz soloists Jim Boitos, Chad Evans, Tim Eyerman and Frank Foster. Since there was no budget for the first few Saxophone Symposiums, these and other guest artists had to be supported by their university, instrument sponsor or through other means. With a couple hundred people attending the Saturday afternoon clinics and a thousand in attendance at each the Friday and Saturday evening concerts, the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium was a success.

Half-way through the first symposium Underwood was asked to begin plan-ning the next year’s symposium, which he did with the same amount of enthu-siasm. After the third symposium, it was decided this was to become an annual event. Underwood, the saxophone section and the band’s public affairs office would be busy organizing this event for years to come.

The first symposium took place at three different locations lying several miles apart – the Sail Loft at the Washington Navy Yard, Howard University, and the old Departmental Auditorium. The symposium found its current home at George Mason when the chairman of the department of music at George Mason University, legendary retired U.S. Air Force Band conductor Col. Arnald Gabriel, asked Underwood to consider moving the Navy Band’s 1991 Saxophone Symposium to the brand new concert hall at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. This large, state-of-the-art facility offered the potential to stage five events at once and has been the home of the symposium

ever since. The current venue has enabled the Navy Band to increase the number of events on the program and attract even larger audiences. This expansion of the symposium has helped reflect the multifaceted nature of the saxophone and the performers who play the instrument.

For Underwood, the 1991 symposium was the most memorable one as Karel Husa guest conducted his compo-sitions “Music for Prague” and “Concerto for Saxophone” with Underwood as the soloist. Underwood was later invited by Husa to perform the same concerto at his retirement ceremony from Cornell University in 1992.

One of the more difficult aspects of planning the Saxophone Symposium is finding various guest artists. In the symposium’s early years, Underwood wanted to invite Zoot Sims and Phil Woods but performer’s avail-ability and Symposium dates didn’t align. In spite of these difficulties, the Navy Band has hosted some of the biggest names in the saxophone community. The following saxophonists have performed with the Concert Band: Claude Delangle of the Paris Conservatory, Masahiro Maeda of the Osaka College of Music in Japan, Dragan Sremec of the Zagreb University Music Academy in Croatia, Arno Bornkamp of Amsterdam, Frederick Hemke of Northwestern University, Steven Mauk of Ithaca College, Debra Richtmeyer of the University of Illinois, Eugene Rousseau of Indiana University and the University of Minnesota and John Sampen of Bowling Green State University. Jazz greats who have performed with the Commodores include Branford Marsalis, Eddie Daniels, Dave Liebman, Chris Potter, Pete Christlieb, Bob Mintzer, Jim Snidero, Chris Vadala, and Grover Washington, Jr.

The legacy that Underwood began over 30 years ago has evolved into the largest two-day saxophone confer-ence in the United States. The goal of the symposium has always been to provide a hands-on learning experience for saxophonists of all ages and abilities.

Under the leadership of Navy Band saxophonist Senior Chief Musician Timothy Roberts, the symposium was expanded to provide more clinics and masterclasses than ever before. In order to provide more national level per-formance opportunities for college saxophonists, Roberts and his team instituted the College Quartet Series in 2003. This sparked an increase in attendance and interest in saxophone chamber music by college and university students throughout the country. Roberts also continued the tradition of inviting international guest artists, and in the past ten years the band has featured soloists from Argentina, Canada, China, Croatia, England, France, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The International Saxophone Symposium has always been a venue to hear new performers and compositions for saxophone. “Fantasia” by Claude Smith, “Gossamer Rings” by David Deason and “Essay for Tenor Saxophone” by David Ott received their world premiere performances at the 1983 sym-posium. “Soliloquy and Dance” by Elliot del Borgo, “Capriccio Concertante,” “Iberian Sketches” and “Americana Suite” are among a few of the other works that were given premiere performances at the Saxophone Symposium. In addition to solos with band, recital-ists are often programming works written within the past 15 years.

The history of the symposium is preserved on the Navy Band website. Using historical materials, pictures, sound clips and pro-grams, the website seeks to be a year-round resource for all saxo-phonists.

The United States Navy Concert Band, the premier wind ensemble of the U.S. Navy, presents a wide array of marches, patriotic selections, orchestral transcriptions and modern wind ensemble repertoire. As the original ensemble of the Navy Band, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for over 85 years.

Collaboration with celebrities has become a hallmark for the Concert Band. The band was featured with Arthur Godfrey of NBC radio fame in 1927. Gene Kelly was guest star for the first episode of “The Navy Hour” radio program in 1945, which the band produced for an astounding 23 years. More recently, the band featured guest artists Tony Curtis and Gregory Peck. In 2002, the band was filmed performing “America the Beautiful;” the performance was broadcast by the NFL prior to each game during opening week.

In addition to national concert tours and an extensive local concert season, the Concert Band has been featured internationally at military tattoos and festivals in Oslo, Stockholm and Quebec City. In 1996, the band was honored to participate in the 300th Anniversary of the Russian Fleet in St. Petersburg and in The Baltic International Festival of the Fleets in Kaliningrad, Russia.

Recognized as one of the finest wind ensembles in the world, the Concert Band is in constant demand by the nation’s foremost musical education organizations, such as the American Bandmasters Association and The Midwest Clinic.

Jazz is America’s music and the U.S. Navy Band Commodores, the Navy’s premier jazz ensemble, have been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for over 40 years. Formed in 1969, this 18-member group continues the jazz big band legacy with some of the finest musicians in the world. Led by Senior Chief Musician Philip Burlin, the Commodores’ mission includes public concerts, national concert tours, ceremonial support in honoring our veterans, jazz education classes and clinics, and protocol performances for high-level military and civil-ian government officials.

The Commodores are held in high regard nation-wide by concert patrons and critics alike. The list of guest artists that have appeared with the Commodores reads like a who’s who of jazz and popular music: Ray Charles, Branford Marsalis, Clark Terry, Grover Washington, Jr., Chris Potter, Jerry Bergonzi, Eddie Daniels, James Moody and many more. They have appeared on television shows, played nearly all major jazz festivals and toured across the United States and abroad. In conjunction with the Airmen of Note (Air Force) and the Army Blues (Army), the Commodores even host their own annual jazz festival, the Joint Service Jazz Festival in Washington, D.C.

As a versatile and relevant musical organization in the 21st century, the Commodores write and arrange much of their vast library of music. Their concerts are an eclectic mix of traditional big band music, exciting jazz vocal arrangements as well as fresh new instrumental music written specifically for the Commodores of

today. This vibrant, dynamic musical group is constant-ly striving for musical excellence and the pursuit of new and exciting ways to communicate with their audiences. Their most recent recording, “Directions,” was released in 2009 to critical acclaim.

The saxophone has a storied history in jazz, R&B, and rock and roll. Why is the saxophone so adaptable to these styles? This lecture will highlight players and styles pushing the boundaries of our instrument in an effort to expose participants to new music. It will focus on saxophonists such as Jeff Coffin, Bill Evans, Courtney Pine, LeRoi Moore, and Dana Colley.

CR LecturekAiTlyn sAkry“Earl Bostic and Willie Smith: An Introduction to Bebop”

Earl Bostic and Willie Smith are relatively unknown alto saxo-phonists who had a large impact on the development of jazz during the transition from swing to bebop. Many students study Charlie Parker to learn bebop and fail to understand the historical progres-sion of the music. I use Bostic and Smith as examples to argue for the pedagogical value of studying more than just the jazz soloists who are most prominent in jazz history narratives. I will illustrate how these soloists influenced Charlie Parker and the development of bebop, and how a student learning bebop can use these soloists as an introduction, for an easier transition into this complex vocabulary.

HT LectureMUsiCiAn 1sT ClAss dOUG O’COnnOr“Understanding Intonation: A Practical Approach for all Musicians”

The subject of intonation is often a source of contentious debate for musicians, even putting historical issues aside: this presenta-tion seeks to shed light on why players of winds and strings often hear pitch differently, or why what one player hears as “right” can be heard as “wrong” by another. In particular, it finds common ground between a core issue of theory analysis and intonation choice: melody vs. harmony. Visual reinforcement, audio playback, and live demonstration help to illustrate a hybridized approach to intonation, but the final goal is simply for the audience to understand the artistic potential for their intonation choices well above and beyond simple “right” vs. “wrong.”

BR Jazz LectureJ . wAde hOwles“Interpreting Jazz-Influenced Music for the Saxophone”

Many classically-trained saxophonists today have difficulty recognizing jazz influence in music and implementing the proper techniques to acknowledge that influence. This presentation aims to assist saxophonists in determining: 1) How to acknowledge jazz influence if it is present in a piece, 2) How much jazz influence is ac-tually present, and 3) What performance practices from the different

Page 21: Harris Theater Chorus Room Grand Tier - The United … files/saxophone symposium... · Harris Theater Chorus Room Grand Tier University of North Carolina at Greensboro Jason Laczkoski

eras of jazz can/should be applied to a piece. By presenting a variety of techniques that saxophonists have at their disposal, as well as suggesting recordings and other pieces to draw upon, this presenta-tion will help classically-trained saxophonists be better equipped to interpret works that show signs of jazz influence.
