Academic Support Center – Student Ambassador Program Contact: Ellen Fisher – [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Student Ambassador Partner Date and Time: Ongoing throughout the smester – M/W/F 10:00-3:00, Th – 10:00-12:00. Can be broken into hour long shifts. Description of Service: The Academic Support Center designates a student aid to act as a Student Ambassador to welcome students and to guide them to the appropriate services in the Center. These opportunities are available during high traffic times noted above. Promise Students will work with Front Desk student staff to welcome students, show them how to sign in, and guide them to appropriate services. Sign up: Email [email protected]

Annual Spring Thank-A-Thon – Thank our Donors in various ways Contact: Kristyn Meyer – [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Thank-A-Thon Date and Time: April 27th through May 8th

Any time scheduled during business hours (M-F, 8:00-4:30p) Description of Service: The Harper College Educational Foundation works with donors to support Harper students through scholarships and program funds. The Thank-a-thon is an opportunity to offer gratitude to the donors who make great things possible on our campus--including the Promise Scholarship. I am in need of volunteers to write thank you notes, make phone calls to donors, and create personalized digital messages of gratitude. Students may sign up for as many hours as they need, and can schedule between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at their convenience (single and multiple volunteer sessions available). Students will make phone calls, write thank you notes and/or create digital thank you messages for donors who make great things possible at Harper. All materials will be provided. Whether you need 1 hour or 10 hours, we can make it work. This volunteer opportunity takes place in the Foundation Office in Building W. CoDesign Meeting Assistants Contact: Megan Johnson – [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Campus Compost Collection Dates and Times: Beginning February 3rd. Description of Service: CoDesign is a group of passionate professionals who craft user experiences through the development of digital products. They are attending this event to learn from speakers and one another, while building camaraderie and understanding between broad specialities. This is a 2 hour event and there will be 2 presenters. The event will be held in the evening between 6:00pm - 8:00pm at the Harper Professional Center in Schaumburg located near the intersection of Higgins Rd. (Rt. 72) and Plum Grove Rd. We will be meeting in room HPC-121. This is expected to be a monthly meeting. Ongoing opportunities may be available. Responsibilities include; Assistance setting up the electronic lectern, initiating the projector and lowering overhead the screen. Setting up a snack table. Greeting guest and instructing them on where to find amenities (washroom, vending machines, etc.). Tiding up the room after the event such as pushing in chairs and clearing tables. Campus Compost Collection Contact: Amy Bandman – [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Campus Compost Collection Dates and Times: Beginning February 3rd. Description of Service: Harper College is seeking volunteers to pick up compost collected from across campus. Harper College Sustainability in partnership with the Chemistry Department has started a composting initiative to reduce waste sent to the landfill and put the nutrient rich soil produced back onto campus grounds. This volunteer opportunity will have a direct impact on campus operations, helping Harper College go green and advance campus sustainability. Volunteers are needed to pick up compostable material from select locations across campus and bring the materials to a centralized collection point. Volunteer shifts are available each week and are based on your availability. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to visit Harper's outdoor compost containers and learn about the composting process. Each volunteer shift is one hour. Debate Tournament Contact: Jeff Przybylo – [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Harper Hawks Debate Tournament Dates and Times:

Friday, Febraury 14th 10:00-2:00 or 2:00-6:00 Saturday, February 15th – 8:00-12:00 or 12:00-4:00 Description of Service: Each year the Harper College speech and debate team hosts other colleges from around the country for speech and debate tournaments. Volunteers would help with the running and administering of the tournament. Volunteers will engage in activities such as running errands, filing critique sheets, data entry, posting of information, making copies, collecting ballots, helping guests find rooms, maintaining the ballot collection table, arranging trophies, light cleanup ... English Conversation Circles Contact: Kathleen Reynolds – [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Engage with English Language Learners Dates and Times: Beginning February 3rd. Description of Service: Be paired with an ESL student at Harper for weekly conversation. Meet at Harper for 45 minutes to an hour to practice speaking skills. Community Relations Contact: Amie Granger – [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Campus tours and event help Dates and Times: Fridays from 8:30-1:00 LOTS of various other events, can generally work with the student’s schedule. Description of Service: Harper’s Community Relations department hosts middle school students from around the area to learn about college. These fun and interactive events allow Harper students to speak with interested 6-8th graders about their experience at Harper. Promise Scholars would lead groups of up to 20 students around campus to different hands-on activities to participate in. Volunteers receive a free lunch. Harper Open House! Event Help Contact: Sarah Kirk – [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Large event help Dates and Times: Event Marcy 19th, 4:00-7:30pm Description of Service: Admissions Outreach hosts an Open House every fall and spring semester to welcome in prospective high school students and their families so they can learn what Harper has to offer! This year we will be using building A on the main floor and upstairs! We will have lots of fun activities happening so in order to make this a success we will need lots of volunteers! PSAO – College Transition Program Contact: Alejandro Martinez, [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Harper Hawks Care Food Pantry Staffing Dates and Times: Event February 21st, multiple events throughout the semester Description of Service: PASO stands for Proyecto de Apoyo: Superando Obstaculos. In English, this translates to Project Assistance: Surpassing Obstacles. PASO is designed to help the parents and family members of Harper Latinx students by answering college questions and helping them feel more a part of the student's journey and Harper College. Volunteers will help with the following at our events: check-in, greet and guide. Volunteers will also help us market PASO to Harper College and the community. Promise Preview Session – Small Event Help Contact: Sean Warren-Crouch [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Event help – check in students, answer questions Dates and Times: Multiple opportunities throughout the semester. Description of Service: Think back a year to your senior year of high school. Remember the Promise Preview Session you were required to attend? High school seniors are invited to attend their Promise Preview Session. In the session, they learn about their next steps to earn the Promise Scholarship. Students will check seniors in high school in for the event. Students will be asked to answer questions at the end of the presentation from current high school seniors. Transition Autism Program Mentor Contact: Anita Rehberg [email protected] Volunteer Opportunity: Mentorship opportunity Dates and Times: Various throughout the semester. Description of Service: The Transition Autism Program (TAP) Peer Mentoring Program is a year-long mentoring commitment designed to assist first-year students on the Autism Spectrum. Responsibilities: - Serve as an energetic and enthusiastic volunteer to help first-year students on the Autism Spectrum succeed at Harper. - Develop and maintain relationships with and provide assistance and support for first-year students (focus on a smooth transition, acclimation and a sense of belonging). - Serve as a resource for students new to the College. - Participate in training, programs and activities. - Attend Peer Mentor trainings and monthly mentor/mentee sessions. - Serve as a positive role model. Qualifications: Be in good academic and social standing. - Be willing to learn and share information about the Harper College community, student life and campus resources. - Demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills. - Have a genuine desire to help their peers succeed. - Demonstrate leadership potential. - Be self-motivated with a positive attitude. - Display a willingness to learn about different cultures.
