Yuker, Harold E. (1924-1997) Collection bulk dates: 1968-1995 15 c.f. Psychologist, Professor, Administrator, Researcher, Writer, Lecturer

The Harold E. Yuker Collection at Hofstra University consists of the professional and research papers of Yuker, a professor of psychology at Hofstra University from 1948 until his death in 1997 and a leading authority on attitudes toward the disabled. Born with cerebral palsy in Newark, New Jersey shortly before the Depression, Yuker was the son of a baker and a seamstress. Dr. Yuker always maintained that although he was born with a physical disability, he did not consider himself handicapped. Widely recognized as a psychologist, Yuker was critical of the tendency of some disabled people to keep to themselves. His motto was, “The most important thing for anyone with a disability is to learn to get along in a nondisabled world.” This is how Harold Yuker lived his own life.

Dr. Yuker never expected to go to college. He attended a grammar school for disabled children, graduating in 1936. He “mainstreamed” himself into a local high school in which he was the only disabled student. Following graduation, he was unable to find emloyment. The states’s Rehabilitation Commission sent him to college instead. He graduated cum laude from the University of Newark in 1944. He worked briefly for the government before being offered a fellowship to the New School for Social Research. He earned a M.A. in Psychology in 1950 and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from New York University in 1954. Advised to aim for a career in research, Yuker applied instead to be a lecturer at Hofstra.

He began his professional career as a teacher in the Department of Psychology in 1948, becoming a full professor in 1964. In the early 1960's, Yuker played a major role in making the Hofstra campus the first in the nation to become 100% architecturally barrier-free to persons with disabilities.

In 1969, Yuker was appointed Associate Provost. He subsequently served as Interim Provost and Provost and Dean of Faculties. In 1982, he established and became Director of the Hofstra University Center for the Study of Attitudes Toward Persons with Disabilities. He received the New York State Regents James E. Allen Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to Education. The citation honored him for dedicating his life to fostering the acceptance f persons with disabilities as equal members of society.

Yuker created the Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons (ATDP) Scale, a measure that is still used widely in the field of psychology. His book, Attitudes Toward Persons with Disabilities was published in 1988.

From 1990-91, Yuker served as Director of Hofstra’s Center for Teaching Excellence. In appreciation of his extraordinary service, dedication and generosity to Hofstra, the University

dedicated the Harold E. Yuker Reference Library in his honor in 1995. The Yuker Collection is arranged into Seven Series:

Series I: Personal Life - This series includes biological information, including clippings

and obituaries; resumes, listings of Yuker’s speeches and publications; documents pertaining to honors and awards; and correspondence for the period 1962-1997.

Series IV: Research Life - This series includes the ATDP Scale and grant proposals along with Yuker’s published articles, monographs and books. Also included are Yuker’s speeches and documents pertaining to the numerous presentations he made between 1977 and 1994.

Series V: Subject Files - This series is composed of Yuker’s alphabetically arranged subject files, which includes correspondence. These files include both Hofstra and non-Hofstra materials.
