EXT. FARM - LATE EVENING

Wheat crops blow in the WHISTLING wind, whipping back andforth with a hint of danger. A boy, IEN, runs through thefield, hands pushing past the crops as he SPRINTS forward.

His eyes are trained on a small house off in the distance.

INT. MYDS HOUSE

Inside, Myd is standing over a table filled with papers,eyes trained on them intently.

He looks up for a moment at the door, as if paranoid, andthen turns back to the papers.

BANG.

Myd SNAPS to face the sound, arms outstretched in a fightingpose.

Its Ien. Hes breathless by now and looks terrified, yetdetermined.

MYDIen, whats wrong?

IEN(through breaths)

Its the... anima army... Theyrehere.

Myd walks towards Ien, his face suddenly keenly serious.

MYDWhere exactly?

IENI dont know, walking towards us,towards the entrance. I dont... Iknow its gonna be bad. I felt themapproaching.

Myd scrutinizes Ien.

Then, he closes his eyes, and breaths slowly, concentratinghimself.

He opens them.

MYD(breathless)

Youre right.

Myd turns to his paper, then to Ien and GRABS his shoulderforcefully.

MYDListen to me carefully, we may nothave much time.

IENYes Teacher.

MYD(intense)

If anything happens to me, you mustremember everything I taught you.Everything, do you hear me?

By this point, Iens color has drained and he stares at Myd.

IENYes Teacher.

MYDIen, the most important thing,never forget who youre fightingagainst, never!

Myd lets go of Ien and grabs his papers, stuffing themquickly in a drawer. Myd has never been this way before,

shaken.

Ien is terrified by it.

Myd has his back to Ien and is working as fast as he can.

MYD(calmed)

Now run as fast as you can to theentrance. They may still be herejust for food collection. Ill meetyou as soon as I can.

IENTeacher...

Myd turns and grabs Iens shoulder, staring right at him.His old eyes are both fiery and full of support for Ien.

MYDGo! And dont let them see yourfear.

Ien stares at the back of Myd, eyes desperate.

Then he closes his eyes, clenches his eyebrows, and breaths.At first rapid, then slower, more forceful.

Ien opens his eyes, nods. Myd lets go of him.

Ien turns towards the door, the fear wiped from his face, amask of determination over it.

EXT. FARM - ENTRANCE

The entrance of the farm is an iron gate post leadingtowards a dirt road. Torches are on either side of the

opening.

PEOPLE are scattered about, walking towards the entrance.Most are carrying large baskets filled to the brim withfood.

At the center is Anabellas mother, MARIA, who is lookingout towards the entrance. She is standing with ANABELLA.

MARIAI mobilized the whole village toprepare for their arrival.

ANABELLAYes, and Ien wont be wrong. Trusthim at least, if you wont trustme.

NEAR THE ENTRANCE, Nil is hauling a huge cart filled withcorn. He pulls the cart up to the entrance, and lets go,wiping his brow.

NILThat should be all of it. Emmy-

He turns around, but his sister is no where.

Before he can process this-

ANIMA LEADER (O.S.)Hello.

Nil turns to see

The ANIMA LEADER. His voice is commanding. He stands talland imposing with his iron helmet and lions beside him. Hehas his left hand on the left lion, almost petting it.

Everyone is silent. It has suddenly become very tense.

Maria walks gracefully yet forcefully towards him, her faceblank of any emotions.

MARIAHello. My name is Maria. We feelhonored to be visited by your menso... spontaneously.

The Anima Leader look at Maria surveys the crowd. Most arelooking onward anxiously at him, and a few are petrifiedwith fear.

Anabella glances over at Nil.

ANIMA LEADERI can tell. You brought quite thewelcoming committee.

MARIAWe heard you coming and assumed youcame for food collection early.

AWAY FROM THE ENTRANCE, Ien sprints towards the crowd. Hestops behind a RANDOM PERSON and watches.

ANIMA LEADER

No.

Maria is taken back for a second, and for a moment her eyesflash with fear.

She recovers quickly.

ANIMA LEADERIm sorry for the troubles you musthave gone to, but thats not ourgoal.

MARIANo, no trouble. Just tell us yourpurpose and were happy to oblige.

ANIMA LEADERThank you.

He walks forward and looks through the crowd, searching.

ANIMA LEADER(sinister)

We need to take in a fewindividuals for questions by orderof the Central Government.

A small gasp emerges from the crowd.

IENS DAD steps forward.

IENS DADOn what grounds?

ANIMA LEADERThats information I cantdisclose.

MARIAWho do you wish to question?

The Anima Leader pauses, and makes one final look throughthe crowd.

ANIMA LEADERThe one named Myd... and-

IENNo!

Ien steps out of the crowd and faces the Anima Leader, alook of hatred on his face.

IENWere not letting you take anyone.

Anabella looks at Ien horrified, and almost steps forward tostop him.

Ien continues to walk towards the Anima Leader.

IENS DADBoy, get back here!

Ien stands next to Maria. She is watching both Ien and theAnima Leader closely, her body tense.

IENYoure not taking Teacher Myd.

ANIMA LEADERChild, dont make me use forceagainst you n-

NILIen stop-

IEN(turning to Nil)

Shut up!

Ien turns back to the Anima Leader.

The Anima Leader is shocked into silence for a moment. Then,his eyes grow narrow.

ANIMA LEADERVery well.

Suddenly, a ROAR and

a lion is leaping towards Ien, mouth open.

Ien turns towards the sound-

ZING!

By the time he turns, he sees the lion

impaled by bamboo-shoots.

Dead.

Maria has her hands outstretched, shocked at what shesdone.

The Anima Leader turns towards his men, rage flowing throughhim.

ANIMA LEADERAttack! Use deadly force ifnecessary!

And the sound of a hundred footsteps fills the air.

Everywhere there are SHOUTS, SCREAMS, and ROARS. The peopleof the farm are mostly fleeing desperately from the animasoldiers, but some are standing and fighting.

EXT. FARM

Ien is running back through the chaos. Suddenly, he isTACKLED and hits the ground.

He rolls over to see who it is, but its his dad.

IENS DADDamn you! What you did will get usall killed!

Ien shoves his Dad forcefully away from him, eyes flared.

IENId rather die fighting like menthen let them oppress us like theiranimals!

Iens Dad reaches to grab Ien when theres a ROAR from

behind.

He turns to see a wolf facing him, and an ANIMA SOLDIER. TheAnima Soldier has his arms outstretched and looks ruthless.His leather armor he wears on his chest looks stained withsomething red, and each breath he takes through his nose ishard and forceful.

ANIMA SOLDIERTell me where Myd is, and you wontbe food for my wolf.

Iens Dad stares at the Anima Soldier for a moment.

Then he nods.

IENS DAD(points)

That way. He lives in a small housepast the wheat fields.

The Anima Solider looks, then turns back to Iens Dad.

ANIMA SOLDIERIf I find you lied to me, youllpay.

The Anima Soldier runs in the direction Iens Dad pointedto.

Ien is speechless.

Iens Dad turns around to Ien.

IENS DADMyds a lost cause. Now come withme and start undoing the damageyouve done boy. Listen to me, Imyour father.

Ien looks at his father, then shakes his head.

IENNo. And youre not my father.

Ien starts to SPRINT in the direction the Anima Soliderwent.

IENS DAD(furious)

BOY!

Iens Dad SIEZES his shoulder-

Ien turns and without pause PUNCHES his father in the face.

His Dad falls back stunned for a second,

and Ien THROW up grass around his Dad like a physical smokebomb.

A BELLOW of rage comes from the grass.

Ien looks back for a second. Iens Dad is fighting throughthe grass, one arm already out. Iens eyes focus on hisdads arm with a twing of hesitation, guilt.

But he runs on.

EXT. FARM - ENTRANCE

Back at the entrance, it is pure chaos. At least a dozenAnima Soldiers are fighting farmers. Wolves and swords clashagainst bamboo-sprouts, grass, and plain fists. The Animaside is winning.

Maria RUNS through the scene, and grabs Anabellas hand. Sheleads her away from the fighting.

ANABELLAMOTHER, I-

MARIAAnabella, run home. Get your bowand arrow. Only fight if necessary,surrender first. Yes?

Anabella has tears in her eyes.

ANABELLAYes mother. Be.. be careful.

MARIA

You too.

ANABELLAMother, I know Ive argued with youbut... I do love you.

Maria kisses Anabella on the cheek. Then, she runs backtowards the entrance towards a farmer facing two AnimaSoldiers.

Anabella covers her mouth, sobbing. Yells and howls drownout her sobs.

She turns to run, but SLAMS into Nil. Relief floods her facefor a moment.

ANABELLANil, have you seen Ien?!

NILNo. Dont worry about him. Hes-

A CRY, and then Nil is KNOCKED BACK by a MAN falling. Nilsreflexes cause him to grab the man, and steadies himself,kneeling.

NIL(to Anabella)

I need to go! Emmys not here, Ihave to find her. Have you seenher?

ANABELLANo... She was talking about getting"Mom" to help with the collectinglast I saw here.

NILThank you. She must have gone toour house.

Anabella grabs the man and they help him stand. He looksover at Anabella, dazed.

Nil nods to Anabella, then he runs off towards his house.

Anabella looks at Nil running off.

Then at the fighting going on around her.

Then at the man. Hes bleeding badly.

ANABELLA(determined)

Can you walk?

MAN... Y- yes.

ANABELLACome, Im getting you to safety.

Anabella starts walking with the man, trying to hold backher tears. SCREAMS can be heard.

END OF ACT 1

ACT 2

EXT. FARM - WHEAT FIELDS - MOMENTS LATER

Ien is sprinting through the wheat fields. Far ahead of himis a figure, the Anima Soldier. Ien is moving his hands outand back, causing some wheat to part out of his way.

Hes getting closer.

Ien throws his hands up.

In front of the Anima Soldier, wheat THICKENS like a wall.

The Anima Soldier tries to SLAM through it, but cant.

He turns around, sees Ien.

And darts to the right.

Ien follows.

The Anima Soldier is zig-zagging through the field. IenTHROWS up barrier after barrier in front of him, causing theman to constantly stop and change directions.

Ien keeps his eyes fixed on the man.

IEN(frustrated)

Come and face me like a man!

Then suddenly, theres a GROWL, a flash

CONTINUED: 11.

And a wolf LUNGES towards Ien.

Ien LEAPS to the left and fall onto his back, feet nearestthe wolf.

The wolf darts towards Ien, teeth bared and eyes dilated. It

runs, unhinged, almost out of control.

Iens KICKS rapidly, panic on his face.

The wolf grabs onto Iens foot-

BANG. Iens kick connects and the wolf CRIES OUT in pain. Itfalls back, and Iens shoe is torn off with it.

In one swift movement, Ien pushes upwards, and throws hishands out.

Wheat stalks ENCASE the wolf, totally surrounding it.

Muffled HOWLS.

Ien takes a minute to pant.

Then, he walks over to where the wolf is trapped, andcreates an opening in the top. Inside, the wolf is gnawingat the wheat and headbutting it desperately.

Ien shakes his head.

IENThats what you get.

He reaches down angerly towards the wolf.

IENAnd give me my shoe back!

Ien grabs his shoe and pulls it out of the wolfs moutheasily. The wolf looks up.

Plopping down, Ien moves his foot into the shoe, then standsback up.

Its quiet.

Ien closes his eyes, and sees the outline of the wheatfield. Searching, searching.

Then, plants being pushed, stepped on. Ien opens his eyes.

IENThere you are.

He runs.

EXT. FARM - CLOSE TO NILS HOUSE

Nil is running through the corn fields. The sounds from thebattle are all but gone, leaving the air quiet and sinister.Nils eyes dart as he runs, totally on edge. Every noisecauses his to turn his head, but he never stops running.

CRACK.

Nils head turns as he runs to a spot ahead of him and tothe left. He keeps running, but then an ANIMA SOLDIER (#2)jumps out in front of him, running parallel.

For a moment, Nil stops, and the soldier doesnt notice him.

Then, the soldier stops.

He looks at Nil, eyes narrowed and ready to attack.

Nil looks at him, eyes searching the man in front of him.

NILI dont want to fight you.

The Anima Soldier studies Nil.

ANIMA SOLDIER (#2)Youre the son, arent you?

Nil is taken aback.

NILWhat?

Anima Soldier (#2) lifts his eyebrows and smirks.

ANIMA SOLDIER (#2)I guess thats why no one says"like mother like son."

Nil looks on, completely confused.

Anima Soldier (#2) moves his arms in a circular movement,and a spotted gray wolf appears from behind him. It snarlsthreateningly.

ANIMA SOLDIER (#2)Ah well. You could still be athreat.

Nils eyes grow wide.

NILNo.. You dont have to do this.

ANIMA SOLDIER (#2)(matter-of-factly)

Yes. I do.

The wolf RACES towards Nil.

Nil backs up

Then, looks at the wolfs feet.

He raises his hands

Grows a spiraling plant out of the ground around the wolfsleft foot

And causes the wolf to fling forward, trapped.

Anima Soldier (#2) opens his mouth in shock. He sprintstowards Nil and starts to move his hands.

But Nils faster. He moves both his hands together,

And two corn plants circle around Anima Soldier (#2)s arms.

Then, two more encircle the soldiers feet, binding himright as he is about to reach Nil.

Anima Soldier (#2) THRASHES and screams.

ANIMA SOLDIER (#2)When I get out, Im gonna kill you,plantae filth!

Nil looks at him, disgust and horror on his face. Victoryhas done nothing to ease his fear.

The soldier looks right into Nils eyes, their faces lessthan a foot away.

ANIMA SOLDIER (#2)Youll wish I had killed you.

Nil stares back at the man. Hes shaking from fear a little,but his voice is firm.

NILStay away from my family. Or youllwish I had done the same thing.

Nil turns and runs.

SECONDS LATER

Nil pushes past the last corn field. The stalks part toreveal

His house

DESTROYED.

The right side of the house has completely crumbled, itswall fallen and the roof sagging without the supports. Ahuge stalk extends out of the middle of the house like a

gigantic spear. The door of the house is kicked in and looksawkwardly stuck, with a hole in the door the size of a foot.

Nils face is one of unspeakable shock, terror, like hiswhole world has collapsed. He stumbles back, legs failinghim.

NILNo...

He pushes himself forward, and RUNS towards the house.

NIL

EMMY!!!

EXT. FARM - OUTSIDE BARN HOUSE

Ien is standing outside of a large-sized barn house. Theevening is setting in, and the light is fading. Blood-redlight illuminates the barn though the windows as Ien looksthrough them.

IEN(whisper)

I know youre hiding in here....Where are you?...

Inside, there are stalls where half-a-dozen cows and otherfarm animals like pigs and chickens lounge. They all seemasleep. Relaxed.

Ien DROPS down so that he can walk under the windows. Hesneaks towards the back entrance. Pauses.

Then softly pushes the door open.

INT. BARN HOUSE

Ien steps through the barn house, each footstep delicate and

soundless. A few of the animals in the barn house slowlylook up at him. Ien turns his head to the other side.

And is face to face with a BULL. The bull is staring at Ien,its pupils large black dots that are locked on him. Ienstops and stares back at the bull.

IEN(whisper)

Tep, wheres the evil anima guy?

The bull lets out a low growl. STAMP STAMP. Dirt is kickedup by the bulls hoofs.

Whats happening hits Ien.

IENOh gam-

Ien LEAPS out of the way of the charging bull, hitting theground.

CRASH. A dust cloud covers Ien and then everywhere SOUNDS ofanimals ricochet around the barn.

Ien scrambles up and see a hen FLYING towards his face. He

throws his arms up in an X, shielding him. Immediately, heCRIES out in pain, and turns around.

A cluster of chicken are pecking at his legs and ripping hispants. Ien stumbles back KNOCKS into something elsecharging, and falls onto the ground.

Vision blurred, dust everywhere, all he can make out-

IENThere you are!

Ien jumps up and looks upwards at Anima Soldier. He isstanding on a platform behind a window close to the edge.

His hands are outstretched, and moving rapidly yet withprecision, like a mad-man simultaneously conducting 10orchestras at once. His face is

ANIMA SOLDIERI tried to let you live! But youveforced me to- AH!

A branch comes FLYING out of the window SMASHES into theAnima Soldiers, and makes him FLY downward.

Iens arms are outstretched, smirking.

The soldier flies towards the ground, spinning, about toimpact the ground with a-

INT. NILS HOUSE

CRACK.

Nil SLAMS into his front door, causing it to become totallyunhinged and fall to the ground.

Inside the house, everything is destroyed. Nil slowly walksthrough it.

Its far too quiet for him.

An old-fashioned stove is on fire, puffing out black smokethat fills the air.

Nil starts to cough.

Half-burned papers litter the floor. Nil steps over a fallenover cabinet, its drawers scattered across the main room.

One is smashed in the wall so hard its embedded there.

NIL(small)

Emmy?

Theres a small sound. Nils eyes widen and he moves towardsit, going into the next room.

INT. NILS HOUSE - SIDE ROOM

Nil walks in. In the center of the room is the huge stalkvisible from the outside. It is at least a foot thick andextends through the roof. Splinters cover the floor.

Nil walks around the stalk, staring at it. His eyes wanderdown.

NILEmm-

His eyes fixate on something and he freezes.

There on the ground is NILS MOTHER.

Eyes open.

Skin colorless.

Body limp.

Motionless.

Dead.

NILNo... no...

Nil slowly collapses onto his knees, his whole body shaking.

A loud RINGING fills his ears.

Tears sting at this face as he tries to reach his hand outto her.

But he cant.

His hand falls to the ground.

NILMom?

Nothing.

For a moment, Nil looks no older than a child.

NILMommy?

Nothing.

Nothing.

Nothing.

Its starting to hit Nil. The world seems to spin, hisbreathing becomes more and more rapid, his fists clench,his-

Another soft noise snaps Nil out of his breakdown. Steps.

He turns around.

EMMY is standing by the doorway, watching wordlessly. Shesfilthy, but unharmed.

EMMANil?

The ringing STOPS.

Nil blinks away the tears, and stands up, walking quickly toEmmy. He picks her up. His arms are still shaking badly. Heholds her so tight, and rests his head close to hers.

NILIts okay, Im here, its okay.Youre okay. Youre okay.

Emmy looks up at Nil, wide eyed with confusion and fear.

EMMA

What happened to Mom?

NILShe... Shes gone Emmy.

EMMA(angry and scared)

No, Mommys right there! I see her!

Nil closes his eyes and strokes Emmys hair. He breathesout, amd its like all his happiness he ever had is goingout of him as he does.

NILHer bodys still there. But she,Mom... left. And shes not comingback.

Emmy struggles against Nils grasp, trying to pull out ofit.

EMMANo! Mom!!

Nil drags her away, pulling as hard as he can.

EMMA(hysterical)

MOMMY! MOMMMY!!

19.

EXT. FARM - OUTSIDE MYDS HOUSE

SHOUTS. Ien runs towards them, pushes through the last wheatfield

and finds himself standing in the middle of TOTAL CHAOS.

A dozen Anima Soldiers are converging on a central figure.Ones hands make a sweeping motions, and his wolf chargestowards the figure. Stalks SHOOT out of the ground as thefigure dodges multiple attacks at once masterfully.

Even with a dozen to one, the figure is still holding itsground. The torches flames, the shouts, and the howls fillthe air.

Ien runs, crouched down, towards the figure.

As he gets closer, he sees the face of the figure. Its Myd.

Myd turns towards Ien, and their eyes meet.

For the split second Myd is distracted, a wolf closes in

and CHOMPS down on his flesh from the back.

MYDAGHHHH!

He spins around, throwing the wolf off.

Ien gets up and sprints towards Myd, growing a long stalkalongside him parallel to the ground as he runs. AnimaSoldiers turn and notice him, and start to attack.

A few are getting near Ien. He stops, focusing his wholebody, and then THRUSTING FORWARD. The long stalk hes grownswings like a clock handle along the ground towards thesoldiers. Most fall.

The one that doesnt takes out a sword. Hes feet away fromIen. The sharp steel sword glints with the reflection of theflames. He swings it towards Ien.

And then the sword flies away.

And then the man flies away.

Ien is STUNNED STILL for a moment.

MYDGET OUT OF HERE!!

Ien turns and sees Myd, arms stretched towards Ien.

CONTINUED: 20.

He turns back and fights. Its getting bad, his movementsmore eratic and desperate. The wolves are getting closer andcloser.

Ien runs towards Myd, determined.

MYDLeave the scum to me and GO!!

Ien stops. He looks at Myd, conflicted. One half of himwants to obey, but he cant.

A wolf aims for Myds feet. Ien swings his arms upwards, andthe wolf FLIES back.

Iens eyes move to another wolf. But theres too many ofthem. He cant even concentrate on any of them, and more andmore just seem to be coming, like ants multiplying, theyreall descending down on-

BANG.

Ien falls and his head swirls with a loud RING.

Through double vision he sees a soldier. A wolf jumpingtowards him. Then, its impaled.

The world is going. Blackness.

Ien turns over. Myd. Where is Myd.

Ien shouts, but he cant hear anything.

There. Hes surrounded. Grabbed. Theres a wagon.

Ien stumbles upwards, and forces himself forward towardsMyd. Theres only seconds left.

And then a FLASH OF TEETH, and

Darkness.

CUT TO BLACK:

INT. BARN HOUSE - MORNING

Peaceful and painfully bright morning light, gray andyellow, hits Iens eyes. He squints at it, and holds hishand up like a shield.

IENAh!

He stares down at his shoulder in pain. There, he sees thathe is shirtless, in a bed, and his shoulder is bandaged withtight green leaves.

The entire farm house room has been converted into amakeshift hospital. Around a dozen beds are spread outaround the room, and everyone seems to be helping in someway.

ANABELLA (O.S.)Hello. Im glad to see you up.

Ien looks up and sees Anabella sitting by the bed. Sheslooking at him with a smile, but theres something behindit.

IEN(dazed)

Oh. Hello. Uh, I- you... were,waited for me? By the bed?

Anabella blushes.

ANABELLAN-no. Ive been doing a lot ofthings in here.

Maria walks over by Anabella. Shes carrying many differentsmall sized pouches.

MARIAFinally. Iens up, I may actuallyget you to do something elsebesides watching him.

Anabella is a scarlet red.

ANABELLAYes Mother.

Ien CHUCKLES, but ends up wincing.

Anabella turns to him, trying to save face.

ANABELLAThats what you get for laughing.

Ien closes his eyes from the pain.

IENYes, I suppose...

(painfully)Agh.

Anabella stares at him for a minute.

ANABELLALet me help you.

Anabella reaches out her hands and starts to unravel theleaves around Ien like bandages. Ien winces and bites hismouth to stop from crying out.

ANABELLAYou have a bite wound. Its prettybad but my mother says it willheal. Beyond that, theres Ien momand Myd-

At the sound of the name, Ien suddenly sits up in his bed.

IENMyd!

He tries to stumble out of bed, CRYING out. Anabella catcheshim.

ANABELLAStop, no, Ien-

Ien pushes her back, causing her to hit another bed.

ANABELLA(LOUD)

IEN!

Silence. Ien turns to Anabella, shocked.

Anabella sighs.

ANABELLAMyds gone.

His breath seems to stop. A twitch of his left hand, and Ienlooks like hes about to pass out.

Anabella grabs Ien and leads him back to the bed.

Ien lays down in silence.

ANABELLAWe think the Anima Army took him.

IEN(soft)

They did. I remember.

Ien closes his eyes in pain again, but its not from hisshoulder this time.

Theres silence.

Slowly, Anabella starts to take off Ien bandages again.

Then, she starts to rub ointment on Iens shoulder. Theres

a deep bite mark on his right shoulder.

Throughout all this, Ien is stone-faced.

Finally, Anabella starts to reapply the leaf bandages.

Ien turns to Anabella.

IEN(somber)

What else happened.

ANABELLA

People faught. People got hurt.

IENYou said something about Nils mom.

Anabella turns away.

IEN(asking)

She was taken too.

Anabella shakes her head. Soft sobs are coming from her.

IENTell me.

Anabella turns back to Ien. By this time, her face issplotchy from the tears, and absolutely shattered.

EXT. FARM - NEAR FOREST

Ien is walking through the end of the wheat fields next tothe beginning of the forest. Hes dressed completely inblack and holding a small tree stem in his hands. Hiseyesight is straight ahead.

Then theres a russle. Ien turns and sees his fatherstepping out behind him.

IENS DADBoy.

Ien turns back and ignores his father. Suddenly, hes

GRABBED

And spun around.

Ien looks up into his father eyes. Theyre filled with rage.

IENS DADYou will listen when I speak toyou. Understood?

Ien is silent, and looks at him without fear.

Iens Dad tightens his grip on Iens shoulders, crushingIens wound.

IENS DADUnderstood?

IEN(trying not to let the painshow)

... Understood.

IENS DADYou caused this by provoking the

Anima Soldiers. I dont know whogot it into your head for you to dothat, but from now on, you doexactly what I say, when I say it,boy. Understood?

Ien glances away. Hes swallowed almost all the pride hecan.

Ien snaps.

you say. I wasnt wrong to fight.And you- youre a coward.

Ien tries to turn away when-

SMASH

a fist COLLIDES into his face, causing him to fly forwardonto the ground.

Iens Dad walks away, leaving Ien sprawling on the ground.

INT. - FOREST

Inside the forest, there is a space that has no treesgrowing. People are standing around the spot. At the frontis the PREACHER, standing behind a large hole next to a pileof dirt. In front of him is the body of Nils Mom.

Nil and Emmy are standing closest to the Preacher. Both areholding black roses. Nil has his arms around Emmy and isstaring at the preacher.

The only sounds are the preachers low voice and Emmyswails of sorrow that seem to fill the air.

Ien jogs up to the back of the people standing. A bruise isstanding to form near his jaw.

Anabella turns and sees him. When she sees his bruise, shockgoes through her.

ANABELLAIen, what happened?!

IENI fell.

ANABELLAOnto a fist?

Ien sighs.

IEN(sarcasm)

Yes.(pause)

Can we not talk about this now?

Ien glances at Nil. Anabella follows his gaze and suddenlybecomes very sober.

ANABELLAYes

The preacher takes a seed in his hand and places it througha cut on the torso of Nils Mom.

Then, he slowly moves the body into the hole, joisening itdown via rope.

Nil leads Emmy up to the hole, and places his rose down nearit. He gently grabs Emmys hands, and eases the rose out ofher.

She is holding onto it tightly, and it takes a long time forNil to do.

Everyone watches, and now even the Preachers soft voice hasended, leaving just Emmys cries.

INT. ANABELLAS HOUSE

KNOCK.

A hand opens the door.

Ien is at the door. When he sees who opened it, he looks alittle surprised.

IENOh. Nil. Hello. I didnt expect tosee you here...

NILMy house is destroyed.

IENYes... That makes sense youwouldnt be staying there. May I

come in?

Nil lets Ien in. By this time, Iens bruise has become adeep purple.

NILEmmas asleep in Anabellas room.We dont want to wake her.

Ien walks into the room and closes the door behind him.Anabella is sitting on the floor, staring up at the two boyswith anxiety for what will happen.

Ien looks down for awhile, then up.

IENI just wanted to say, no, I wantedyou to know. Im leaving.

ANABELLAWhat?!

IENMyd was kidnapped. Im going afterhim.

Anabella is stunned.

ANABELLAWhy?

Ien sighs, then throws his fist down in deep frustration.

IEN(pained)

Because its true, its all myfault!! I caused this bychallenging the Anima and being tooweak to win. Myds capture,everyones injuries, all thedamage, its on me!

ANABELLA(quiet)

No, its not-

Ien turns from Nil to Anabella.

IEN

Please, just say something. Yell.Hit me. Just know, Im so sor-

NILIm coming too.

Ien does a double take.

IENWhat?

ANABELLA... Me too.

Anabella stares at the ground. Her hands are clasped infront of her.

ANABELLAYou cant go out alone. So Imcoming.

IENWait, no... Youre supposed to hateme.

Nil does a quick fake-smile.

INT. ANABELLAS HOUSE - ANABELLAS ROOM

Ien is in Anabellas small room, watching her back herthings in a big burlap sack.

Anabella opens a drawer and starts to pull old-fashionedglass make-up bottles and other make-up products.

IEN(laughs)

Make-up? Really?

Anabella looks up at him, her face hard. Ien shrugs.

IENI just dont think we have enoughroom for frivolous stuff like that.

Anabellas eyes are clear and focused.

EXT. FARM - ENTRANCE - DAWN

Ien, Nil, and Anabella, are all standing by the entrance tothe farm looking out. Emmy is on Nils back, piggy-backstyle. Each has a large bag of things they are taking withthem.

The break of a new day is approaching.

Ien looks out, then to each of his friends.

IENLets go find Myd.

They walk toward the entrance, which for them, now, is anexit.
