The scholarship is a joint initiative of Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) and the Harness Racing Training Centre (HRTC). The HRTC has training sites at Bendigo and Melton but students can reside anywhere in Victoria.

Who is offering the scholarship?

Why have the scholarship?This initiative is designed to:• Encourage young people involved in Pony Trots to

consider a career as a Harness Race Driver• Formalise a pathway from Pony Trots to the industry• Offer financial and mentor support for young people

wishing to transition from Pony Trots to the professional sport of harness racing.

Who is eligible?Any young person who has been a participant in Pony Trots in the last 18 months is eligible to apply.

The scholarship recipient is required to:• With appropriate assistance, apply for a Grade C Driver

licence with HRV

• Complete RGR20108 Certificate II in Racing (Stablehand) with HRTC. This may be completed full or part time depending on individual circumstances. It can be completed on site at Bendigo or Melton or off site in the workplace depending on individual requirements

• Act as an ambassador for Pony Trots and the scholarship.

• Applicant’s need to be 15 years and older

What is required of the scholarship recipient?

• Cost of HRV C Grade Drivers Licence (valued at $405).• Cost of Training Course (valued at $4.144).• Grant to purchase driver and/or horse gear required to

commence career (valued at $1000)• 12 months formal mentoring by a HRV A grade Driver.

The course is delivered via a Blended Delivery Model. Theory and underpinning knowledge is delivered via an online program with telephone and email support from teachers. Practical skills are delivered and assessed in the workplace or at the HRTC training venues at Bendigo or Melton.

An individual training program that takes into account the location, school, employment and personal needs of the scholarship recipient will be developed.

How are the courses completed?

If the scholarship recipient is a senior secondary school student they will be enrolled in the Certificate II in Racing. As well as being a course that is required for your licence, this course contributes 5 units to a VCE or VCAL program through what is known as Block Credit.
