Page 2: Harmony of Opposites

Thank you for attending the ‘Harmony of Opposites’. You will now find yourself experiencing either of thefollowing contrasting outcomes: you may feel youunderstand the artistic purpose of our event or youmay be confused by what you have just witnessed. And herein lies the harmony of opposites. Contrast, Antitheses and Contradictions are theheart of everything in our world and will never ceaseto feature prominently in all our art forms. Think of itlike this, what is any good narrative without anantagonist? Each musical miniature had been chosen or createdin response to an opposing theme. Some haveincorporated aspects of other art forms to make thetheme clearer or to expand the scope for an artisticstatement. Maybe you have already guessed at thethemes during the performance? Maybe you have noidea at all? Didn't get enough time to take it all in? Visit ourwebsite to experience the entire show again. Howcreatively can you explore the material? Lauren Hickman,Performance Director

Small as a peanut,Big as a giant,We're all the same sizeWhen we turn off the light. Rich as a sultan,Poor as a mite,We're all worth the sameWhen we turn off the light. Red, black or orange,Yellow or white,We all look the sameWhen we turn off the light. So maybe the way,To make everything rightIs for god to just reach outAnd turn off the light! -Shel Silverstein

Lincolnshire MedleyArranged by Christopher Donleavy

-'Big as a giant''The Lincolnshire tunes medley is a collection of 4pieces that all have links to Lincolnshire in some way, itwas composed for four female voices with an addedelement of a soundscape that plays in the backgroundthat leads into the next piece of the Harmony ofOpposites.'

Soundwall:

Composed by Jamie Pope

-'Red, black or orange, yellow or white''The soundscape is made up of long sustained notes, with lots of arpeggiation and modulation. It wasdesigned to sound "big" to fill the space of thesoundwall in the Collection museum. The longsustained chords show colour through the music.'

Suite for Flute, Clarinet and Piano (III) Alec Wilder

Usher Reception:'My composition is called Plastic Whales. I wrote itspecifically for electric guitar, accompanied by asaturation of pedal effects such as reverbs and delays. The piece represents the sounds of ocean life by beingmelodic whilst displaying creating perceptions ofdepth, to again portray the vastness and harmony ofour oceans. The line ‘small as a peanut’ is a direct link between thearea of the performance (underneath the plastic lamp)and the composition itself as it displays howsomething so small (in this case, plastic fragments) caneffect something so immeasurable in such a harshmanner.'

-'We're all the same size'
