Hatha Yoga has its roots in the ancient Indian tradition of Tantra. Tantra is a combination of two words, tanoti and tray- ati, which mean expansion and liberation respectively. Therefore Tantra is the science of expanding the conscious- ness and liberating the energy from the limitations of the mind and body, to live a life free from the bondage of the world while still living in it. On a more practical level Yoga is a means of balancing and harmonising the body, mind and emotions. This is done through the practice of asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, shatkarma and meditation. Yoga can benefit people of all ages and ability. Yoga is not competitive; the aim is to be comfort- able as you move into each posture. With regular practice, knots, tension and stiffness in the body are released and the whole physiological and neurological system is enhanced. In contrast, golfer’s elbow or medial epicondylitis is felt on the inside part of the joint. They commonly occur in people who do not play golf or tennis. Often they are caused by everyday events, such as carrying heavy shopping, or holding tight onto an object repeatedly or for long periods; this includes use of a mouse, screwdriver, shovel or hammer etc. Poor posture and sitting round-shouldered may aggravate elbow pain. These conditions are often associated with muscle tightness and pain around the upper and lower arms which may travel into the hand and fingers as well as the elbow. The joint itself becomes fixed and inflamed, affecting both the tendon and nerve in that area. Exercises alone are not usually enough to help with these con- ditions. In most cases the fixated joint needs mobilising with a chiropractic adjustment technique, along with soft tissue release and stretch. A helping hand as women matureWomens' lives today are more

busy and stressful than everwith many juggling jobs, child-

care and looking after the home. Stresscan increase the likelihood of illness, and women are one-and-a-half timesmore likely than men to be affected byanxiety and low mood, according to thecharity Mind.Homeopathy can be used to helpwomen at any stage of life, from periodpain through pregnancy and birth tomenopausal symptoms and the achingjoints of older age. This 200-year-oldsystem of medicine is based on treatingthe individual with homeopathic reme-dies that trigger the body's own naturalhealing mechanism. Based on thepatient’s experience of their individualsymptoms, a homeopath will match themto the most appropriate medicine. As anindividual will experience symptoms dif-ferently from another, patients with thesame condition will need different home-opathic remedies.Hormones are powerful agents and anyimbalance can result in many differentsymptoms. Problems suffered by womenwhich are commonly seen by home-opaths include mild acne, mental andemotional issues, pre-menstrual syn-drome, heavy and/or irregular periods, fertility issues and menopausal symp-

toms amongst many others. Menopause is often portrayed in a nega-tive way as it is a time of life that womenencounter a set of uncomfortable symp-toms. However, it is a naturally occurringevent in a woman's life and, although itsignals the end of the childbearingyears, it also offers an opportunity fornew interests, new growth and the fulfil-ment of many life dreams. A new study puts British women at thetop of the list for suffering symptoms ofmenopause, as many are turning theirbacks on Hormone ReplacementTherapy (HRT). Recent studies haveshown that there are health risks associ-ated with HRT, including an increasedrisk of breast and uterine cancer, heartattack and stroke. The most common symptoms ofmenopause are hot flushes, nightsweats, headaches and mood swings.Homeopathic treatment has been shownto be effective for many of these symp-toms and is without toxic or addictiveside effects. In a study carried out at anNHS well-woman clinic in Sheffield, 81%of 102 patients reported improvement ofthese menopause symptoms after home-opathic treatment.

The demon drink......?

Please note:

The views expressed in this Newsletter are not necessarilythose of the Harmony Centre. Anyone seeking health adviceshould consult a qualified practitioner.

You're thinking this article is undoubtedly about alcohol -you're wrong. It's about something most of us con-sume, that has become more and more fashionable and

which we are encouraged to drink in ever increasing quanti-ties. It's becoming integral to our shopping trips, our wait on astation platform, and many of us have a special "authentic"machine in our kitchens ... Yes, it's coffee I'm talking about. What's wrong with coffee, you may ask? Well, it's perfectlyacceptable as an occasional treat, but it's when it's consumedregularly ... more than once a day ... that it might be adverselyaffecting your health. How? Well, leaving aside the difficultiesthat many people have digesting the milk contained in a cap-puccino (which could be a whole article in itself!), most of usare aware that coffee beans contain caffeine, which stimulatesnoradrenalin release in the brain, causing our respirationprocesses to quicken, our pulse rate and blood pressure toincrease, as well as the temporary relief of fatigue or depres-sion, making us feel more alert. Coffee might make you "feel good” in the short term, but it canbe addictive and may trigger headaches. With some people, itcauses increased nervous symptoms (including panic attacks),anxiety and insomnia. In others, it is associated with aggra-vating heart and artery problems; consuming more than twocups of coffee a day can cause increased blood levels of bothtriglycerides and cholesterol. It is thought that the oils and

Keep your coolEven in cold weather, it is best to avoid scaldingly hot drinks.Very hot drinks are stressful on the digestive tract, as they candamage the mucosal lining. Let them cool a bit before drinking.

Happiness beats cancerA happy woman has a stronger immune system that can beatbreast cancer. In a study involving 227 women with recentlydiagnosed breast cancer, half were taught psychological skills toreduce their stress levels. Those who went through the stress-reducing programme had a 45% reduced risk of recurring breastcancer, even 11 years later. Those who developed breast can-cer again were much more likely to survive. (source: ClinicalCancer Research, 2010; 10)

Benefits of brushing-upA morning body-brush before shower or bath can work wonders, improving circulation (good against the cold) and skin tone, aswell as stimulating the removal of toxins via your lymphatic sys-tem. Use a natural bristle brush, working bare skin as vigorouslyas is comfortable from extremities towards your heart. Avoidyour face and sensitive skin. Takes only a few minutes a day.Trish Dent, Shiatsu Practitioner

Keeping in a good moodWe all know that sunshine is needed to help keep our moodsup. Make sure that you spend 10 - 20 minutes each day out-side, enjoying sun or rain, be it fair or foul. Baring your skin tosafe levels of natural daylight will keep your spirits up and boostyour vitamin D level, help with mental agility and keepingdementia at bay, as well as aiding bone health.

pieces of beans in sediment-rich coffee (such as espres-so and cappuccino) is thesource of harm. Other possible side effectsof drinking coffee includedecreased sensitivity toinsulin, irritation of the stom-ach lining, diarrhoea andheartburn. One study found that drinking four or five cups ofcoffee daily raised oestrogen levels in women aged 36-45years. Drinking coffee can also cause vitamins to bereleased out of the body before they can be absorbed; somaybe it's not a good idea to have that coffee after a meal. Research shows that healthy people can safely consume upto 200mg of caffeine per day - a standard cup contains 90-150mg of caffeine. However, "gourmet" versions sold in cof-fee shops may contain double or triple these amounts. There are alternatives: caffeine-free coffee substitutes, usual-ly made with a barley or chicory-root base. These can warmyou up, without giving you the highs and lows of ordinary cof-fee consumption.
