NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: MAY 12, 2015

British composer Joby Talbot is featured on the latest release from GRAMMY® award-winning choir Conspirare, led by Craig Hella Johnson. Talbot’s a capella masterpiece Path of Miracles describes the pilgrimage route across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela. Choral music by Brazilian composers is the focus of Romaria, a fascinating collection from the Choir of Gonville & Caius College. The second Onyx release by lyric soprano Anne Schwanewilms features lieder by Mahler and Schoenberg, and Rameau’s opera Castor and Pollux is the second recording from new harmonia mundi artists Ensemble Pygmalion. Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series goes Latin this month with works by Albéniz and Granados. Music of Grieg, including his evergreen Piano Concerto, is the focus of the latest release from Spanish virtuoso Javier Perianes. Stephen Hough also plays Grieg in an album devoted to the composer’s delightful Lyric Pieces. Michael Tilson Thomas leads the San Francisco Symphony in Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony and Romeo and Juliet suite and Graham Ross and the Dmitri Ensemble perform orchestral versions of Shostakovich string quartets. Chamber music releases include James Ehnes playing violin sonatas by Franck and Strauss, the Ragazze Quartet playing works by Dvorák and Schulhoff and Ensemble Signal performing Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians. Genre-bending composer Ludovico Einaudi brilliantly reinvents traditional Italian music on his new release the Taranta Project. Jazz and world are in perfect balance on At Home, a live recording by Roberto Fonseca & Fatoumata Diawara.

Alina Ibragimova plays YsaÿeYsaÿe’s Sonatas for solo violin were sketched out in a fevered twenty-four hours during the summer of 1923, a response to the question of why — in over two hundred years — no one had attempted to follow the path forged by Johann Sebastian Bach. Russian virtuoso Alina Ibragimova, whose earlier recording of Bach’s Sonatas & Partitas was revelatory, turns out performances fully worthy of this distinguished ancestry.

IMPORT There are few composers who have vanished into the darkness of music history to the extent of Johann Abraham Schmierer. Some listeners may wonder why this lovely music has not been recorded earlier. One reason is that six of the suites from Zodiaci Musici are missing. Another, strangely enough, may be the composer’s name. Schmierer is German for “scribbler,” and this sobriquet may have biased some against his music without ever hearing it. This release, featuring Petr Wagner and his Ensemble Tourbillon, makes a strong case for Schmierer’s rehabilitation.

IMPORT Until the mid-sixteenth century, the cello was only used for accompanying purposes. It was not until around 1660 that the cello came into its own, thanks to some alterations that were made to the instrument by luthiers in Bologna. Therefore it is

no surprise that the first composers for the cello were Italian. The first disc of this anthology presents the origins of the solo literature, with works by Domenico Gabrielli, Bononcini and Marcello. The second features sonatas by Geminiani and Vivaldi. Roel Dieltiens is the soloist on this fascinating collection.

IMPORT In the Romantic and early modern period, the French fascination with ‘foreign’ cultures and influences brought elements of the East, Africa, the Orient and even jazz into classical music. The rich colors of Spain were enticing as well, and many composers

blended the traditional sounds of Spain into their works. This disc featuring Les Siècles led by François-Xavier Roth, samples some of the finest compositions in this vein including music by Chabrier, Massenet, Ravel and Debussy.

IMPORT The encore, an end-of-concert ritual, is always highly appreciated by the audience. In a way, through them the listener gets to know the artist a little better, as encore choices reveal tastes and personality. This collection featuring pianist Tristan Pfaff includes

works from diverse periods and provenance. From the Baroque era with Bach to music of the 20th century with Prokofiev and Kabalevsky, a broad musical horizon is surveyed. Popular song is also present here, with Gershwin’s “The Man I Love” in its piano version.

IMPORTVassily Sapellnikoff (1868–1941) and Xaver Scharwenka (1850–1924) were among the earliest generation of pianists to record, and on this ground alone it is surprising that their complete recordings have never before been transferred to CD. Not

only do they give us a fascinating insight into nineteenth-century pianism, but in Sapellnikoff ’s Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 (the premiere recording of the work) we hear the pianist who, after his 1888 Hamburg performance under the composer’s baton, went on to become Tchaikovsky’s favored soloist.

IMPORT To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the accession of Francis I, crowned King of France on 25th January 1515, the Ensemble Clément Janequin and Diabolus in Musica pay homage to the greatest musician of the King’s chapel, Jean Mouton.

Armed with a wealth of experience in the repertoires of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the two ensembles come together to pool the talents of the great vocal personalities that have built their reputation.

IMPORT47 Minutes; Region 0; 16:9 Format; Stereo; English SubtitlesWhile hunting at night, Prince Arindal encounters the beautiful fairy Ada. Both fall in love immediately. Arindal decides to be always at Ada’s side in the fairy realm. The fairy king warns, however, if Arindal

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe Ragazze Quartet is a young Dutch/British string quartet acclaimed for its musical enthusiasm, talent, versatility and dynamic presentation. On Cesko, they take us across Europe to the extraordinary land of Bohemia (popularly known as Cesko, but officially the Czech Republic), the homeland of composers Antonín Dvorák and Erwin Schulhoff. The indescribable energy of this music transports us. Its folk melodies and harmonies reveal the essence of a nation steeped in a deep cultural history. Both composers were masters of merging the old with the new and fusing a rich new musical heritage.

IMPORT Romaria – a word suggesting pilgrimage, crowds, and processions – evokes much of what is distinctive about modern Brazil – its mix of people, its vibrancy, its faith. This survey of modern Brazilian choral music reflects these qualities, as well as the natural wonders of this amazing land. Geoffrey Webber and his ever-adventurous choir sing both sacred and secular works dating from the 1950s to the present, in a program developed in conjunction with the University of São Paulo’s music department. Founded in 1348, Caius College Choir is one of Britain’s leading collegiate choirs and this is their eighth recording on Delphian.

IMPORT Celebrated Spanish pianist Javier Perianes joins forces with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sakari Oramo for a performance of one of Grieg’s most popular works. Composed when he was just 24, Grieg’s Piano Concerto combines elements of the Romantic style with motifs typically found in Norwegian folk music. Grieg felt more comfortable writing in miniature forms and in 35 years, produced no fewer than 66 Lyric Pieces – every one a gem. The Piano Concerto is paired here with selections from that collection, including the popular March of the Trolls, the poetic Homesickness and his final lyric piece, Remembrances.

IMPORT Rameau’s third opera, Castor & Pollux, was first performed in 1737. It follows the story of twin brothers, the mortal Castor and the immortal Pollux. These famous heroes are both in love with the Princess Telaira but she loves only Castor. When Castor is killed in battle, Pollux, yielding to the pleas of Telaira, journeys to the underworld to take his place. However, Jupiter’s divine intervention grants them both immortality. The opera ends as they take their place in the zodiac as the constellation Gemini. Rameau made substantial cuts, alterations and additions to the work for its revival in 1754. Scholars have long argued over which version is superior. On this release, Raphaël Pichon and the Ensemble Pygmalion make a passionate case for the 1754 edition of one of Rameau’s finest works.

IMPORTVolume 65 of Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series journeys to Spain. The Albéniz Concierto fantástico owes much to Schumann and Chopin, albeit with an added drizzle of the Iberian peninsula; the perennially popular Rapsodia española, on the other hand, throws all such classical models to the wind. Granados never actually got round to writing his piano concerto, so our pianist here — Hyperion debutant Melani Mestre — has done it for him. And it’s a romp. The first movement is pretty much ‘echt,’ from Granados’s sketches for a putative piano concerto, but thereafter it’s a hugely enjoyable “what-if.”

IMPORT Jacquet of Mantua is not a household name. Even in the sixteenth century he was routinely mixed up with other composers of similar (or even not-that-similar) names. But his music is quite apart, as this new recording makes abundantly clear: melodic

lines of audacious scope and a textural variety rarely equaled make this music a treasurable discovery, and one which The Brabant Ensemble’s performances greatly enrich.

IMPORT Dona nobis pacem became a somewhat unexpected hit for Vaughan Williams. A fervently antiwar plea, the work remains to this day one of the composer’s most widely performed works. Coupled with it here is the first recording of Stephen Hough’s Missa

Mirabilis (the title derives from an unfortunate motorway incident), a work which shares with the Vaughan Williams an ability to seem very much greater than the sum of its parts. Andrew Litton directs the Colorado Symphony and all-star soloists Sarah Fox and Christopher Maltman.

IMPORTPerforming the dual role of soloist and conductor, Augustin Dumay leads the Sinfonia Varsovia in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. The concerto is paired here with Beethoven’s compact, extrovert and high spirited Symphony No.8. The music captures his boisterous humor, especially in the closing minutes of the work. The second disc features Brahms’s String Sextet No.1. His chamber music for strings begins not with a quartet, which would have invited comparison with Beethoven, but with a sextet. The lush sounds of the additional instruments provided a darker sonority that suited Brahms’s complex and rich contrapuntal and tonal palate. The work’s premiere was led by Joseph Joachim, a champion of the Beethoven concerto, and a lifelong friend of Brahms.

IMPORT C.P.E. Bach wrote a large amount of music for solo keyboard, but his reputation was made with the publication of two sets of sonatas – the Prussian Sonatas, dedicated to Frederick The Great, and the Württemberg Sonatas, dedicated to the grand duke

of Württemberg. The Württemberg Sonatas are expressive, chromatic and dramatic, fitting the ‘new’ style of composition that Bach helped to create. On this Paraty release, harpsichordist Bruno Procopio offers a fresh look at these visionary yet under-performed works.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDDinu Lipatti was a unique figure in the pantheon of pianists. Although his life was cut short by Hodgkin’s at the age of 33, he is still widely appreciated for the purity of his interpretations and his masterful

IMPORT On Enlarge Your Sax, Brazilian saxophone player Pedro Bittencourt presents compositions for solo saxophone and electronics, each of which is characterized by a different configuration and musical interaction. The album is the result of

Bittencourt’s extensive and elaborate collaboration with seven composers. Together they explored the possibilities of interaction with electronics, and thus increased the variety of sounds. Even the sound of the saxophone has been processed in various ways: electronically amplified, recorded and processed.

IMPORT German contemporary composer Gerhard Stäbler studied with Nicolaus Huber (composition) and Gerd Zacher (organ) at the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie in Detmold and the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen. Winning the 1982 Cornelius

Cardew Memorial Prize was the first in a series of accolades he has received as a composer. Stäbler’s music often transcends the conventional framework. His catalogue of works contains only five pieces for organ, all of which are recorded here by Dominik Susteck.

IMPORT Charlotte Seither is one of the most promising German composers in her generation. She has received many honors and prizes, including the 2010 Praetorius Musikpreis for Composition and the 2012 Pfalzpreis für Musik. In August 2013, her orchestral

piece Language of Leaving was prèmiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Proms and was broadcast live from Royal Albert Hall. This collection of Seither’s chamber music played by the Elole-Klaviertrio includes two trios, a duo for violin and cello, and solo works for each of the three instruments of the group.

IMPORTFile in: JazzJuneteenth is a traditional festival of freedom for African Americans. The name comes from a date, June 19, 1865, the day blacks in Texas learned that slavery was abolished. Inspired by the upcoming

150th anniversary of the festival, American jazz pianist Stanley Cowell first created the suite for piano recorded here, and then went on to create a work on the same theme for orchestra, choir and electronics. Cowell, currently a professor at Rutgers, has worked with many jazz greats including Max Roach, Bobby Hutcherson, Clifford Jordan, Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz.

IMPORTFile in: JazzFrom New Orleans to Paris and festivals around the globe, the trio La Section Rythmique has played with some of the best in swinging jazz today. On this release, they offer a fresh take on standards of

New Orleans jazz, combining elements of creole, blues and funk. It is for good reason that this trio is Evan Christopher’s preferred rhythm section as it developed its personal sound informed by his knowledge of the culture and music of New Orleans.

Organized around the quintet’s often collective compositions, Eastwood offers a couple of covers (Herbie Hancock and Horace Silver) that show his passion for lyrical hard bop, and a fresh interpretation of one of his compositions for the cinema — one of the main focal points of Eastwood’s career. Full of melodic elegance and a sustained sense of groove, Time Pieces puts us right at the heart of a modern, contemporary jazz songbook. Eastwood is joined by Brandon Allen on sax, Quentin Collins on trumpet and flugelhorn, Andre McCormack on piano and drummer Ernesto Simpson. This vinyl release features two bonus tracks.

IMPORTFile in: JazzAt Home was recorded live in 2014 at the Jazz in Marciac festival. The show was part of a 45-day tour initiated by the meeting of Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca and Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara at a small studio in Paris. The two musicians found they shared the same outlook, and within a few minutes of meeting, the smiles began to flow. There were many magic moments to follow, as Roberto’s spirituality and Fatoumata’s sensitivity blended into an awesome sound that goes straight to the heart. On tour around Europe, the seven people in the group made it their mission to discover the Mali in Roberto and the Cuba in Fatoumata. This special album displays the talents of two artists who, for a time, ceased to be two and became one.

At his side were French producers The Jazzbastards and fellow world-class musicians including Damon Albarn. This vinyl release from Jazz Village features remixes of two of the album’s finest tracks. The German/Chilean duo Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer reinvented “African Man,” and with his knowledge of minimalist beats, Londoner Fort Romeau injected a sophisticated disco-esque rhythm into “Go Back.” The results are half-way between deep house revival and sci-fi soul.

IMPORTFile in: World / Europe / ItalyIn 2010, Ludovico Einaudi was invited to direct the orchestra of the La Notte Della Taranta festival in Salento, Italy. Embarking on a mission to reinvent traditional Salentine music, Einaudi invited a few fellow musicians to share in the adventure, including Ballaké Sissoko, Justin Adams, Juldeh Camara, Mercan Dede, Redi Hasa and Mauro Durante. The resulting collaboration of these great musicians was a huge hit. After taking the show on tour, the decision to document the powerful emotions of this extraordinary journey was made. The Taranta Project is a tremendously exciting and innovative album, and Einaudi’s superb arrangements breathe new life into an ancient tradition.
